Answer ALL questions
PART A - (9×2= 18 marks)
1. State Fourier’s law of conduction.
2. Define Thermal conductivity.
3. Write down the three dimensional heat conduction equation in cylindrical co-ordinates.
4. What is critical radius of insulation or critical thickness?
5. Define Fin efficiency.
6. Define Fin effectiveness.
7. State Newton’s law of cooling or convection law.
8. Define Reynolds number (Re).
9. Define Prandtl number (Pr).

PART B - (2X 16 =32 marks)

10. a) An external wall of a house is made up of 10 cm common brick ( k = 0.7 W/mK)

followed by a 4 cm layer of gypsum plaster ( k = 0.48 W/mK). What thickness of
loosely packed insulation ( k = 0.065 W/mK) should be added to reduce the heat loss
through the wall by 80%. (16)

(or)
b) Derive the Heat conduction Equation in Cartesian coordinates. (16)
11. a) A steel tube k=43.26 W/mK of 5.08 cm ID and 7.62 cm OD is covered with 2.54 cm of
asbestos insulation k=0.208 W/mK. The inside surface of the tube receives heat by
convection from a hot gas at a -temperature of 316°C with heat transfer coefficient
ha=284 W/m2K while the outer surface of Insulation is exposed to atmosphere air at
38°C with heat transfer coefficient of 17 W/m 2K Calculate heat loss to atmosphere for
3 m length of the tube and temperature drop across each layer. (16)
(or)

b) (i) A cylinder 1m long and 5 cm in diameter is placed in an atmosphere at 45˚C. It is

provided with 10 longitudinal straight fins of material having K = 120 W/mK. The
height of 0.76 mm thick fins is 1.27 cm from the cylinder surface. The heat transfer
co-efficient between cylinder and atmosphere air is 17 W/m2K. Calculate the rate of
heat transfer and the temperature at the end of fins if surface temperature of cylinder
is 150˚C. (8)
(ii) Aluminium fins 1.5 cm wide and 10 mm thick are placed on a 2.5 cm diameter tube
to dissipate the heat. The tube surface temperature is 170˚C ambient temperature is
20˚C, Calculate heat loss. Take h = 130 W/m2K and K = 200W/mK. (8)
