IMAGE PROCESSING SYSTEM

AID

This converts the analog video signal into a digital code representing shades of gray.

The resolution of the A / D convertor determines the number of distinguishable shades of gray

(i.e., 8-bit resolution = 256 shades of gray , 10-bit resolution = 1024 shades of gray).

INPUT LUT

The I N P U T L O O K - U P T A B L E S can be used to alter the data that is generated b y the A / D converter. This

can be as simple as changing the offset a n d / o r gain, or more complex manipulation of data; for example,

logarithmic correction of the raw data. The input look-up table can be thought of as simply a block of

memory where the data generated by the A / D converter is used as the address for the L U T , therefore, the

data coming out of the L U T is whatever was written to a particular address location by the system

controller. If no alteration to the gray scale is desired, The data written to the look-up table by the system

controller is the same as the address location.

IMAGE PROCESSING AND TEMPORAL STORAGE

This is the heart of a digital imaging system. It is used to temporarily store processed and unprocessed

image information. The image information is processed at a h i g h rate of speed under the direction of the

system controller.

CONTROLLER

This interprets the software instructions thereby sending control signals to the image processor and

transferring data to and from the mass permanent storage device.

PERMANENT MASS STORAGE

This device stores image data for later recall v i e w i n g or additional processing (i.e., image enhancement).

"Permanent" refers to the fact the data is retained w i t h power off, as opposed to "temporary," w h i c h loses

data w i t h p o w e r off.

KEYBOARD

This input device accesses software instructions by means of alphanumerical keys w h i c h are interpreted

into digital instructions for the key pressed.

TEXT DISPLAY MONITOR

This output device allows the v i e w i n g of input and output information of software instructions.

OUTPUT LUT

The O U T P U T L O O K - U P T A B L E performs the same function as the input look-up table, except its location.

This table is used, if desired, to alter the data from the image processor (i.e., enhance the contrast i n the

image), especially i n fluoro digital subtraction angiography or for m a n u a l w i n d o w i n g ( manual contrast

enhancement).

DIA

The digital-to-analog convertor is used to change the digital shades of gray code to an equivalent analog

value. It is also to reinsert the horizontal and vertical synchronization pulses that were striped off by the

A / D convertor. This w i l l reestablish a composite video signal for the video display monitors.
