VM 1721

1. Introduction

Just l i k e a TV-set, a video monitor serves as image reproduction i n s t r u -

ment at the end of a transmission path. In case of a monitor, however,
the picture to be displayed i s not procured from an aerial signal but
from direct picture sources such as cameras, image converters e t c .

The picture i s composed from scanning of many l i n e s , thus resulting

in a coherent image impression, subject to an adequate viewing distance.
For objective value of such viewing distance,approx.0.8 m may be assumed.
Contrary to a data monitor which can only distinguish between LIGHT and
DARK, a video monitor i s able to reproduce a l l nuances of grey in a p i c -
ture true to l i f e .

2. Range of Application

The video monitor VM 1721 has been designed to meet the p a r t i c u l a r l y

high demands of photo-analysis i n radio diagnostics, computer tomo-
graphy and scanning electron microscopy. The VM 1721 f u l f i l l s - among
others - the following requirements:

- very high d e f i n i t i o n and all-over sharpness thanks to double-dynamic

focussing and large video bandwidth;

- highly constant picture size independent of brightness and picture

contents, respectively, thanks to regulated high-voltage supply;
- low l i n e a r i t y and geometry d i s t o r t i o n ;

- BAS-input (composite video) with wide range of input voltage;

- operating elements for brightness and contrast with adjustment scales
to ensure good r e p r o d u c i b i l i t y of preset values;
- 10-turn helical potentiometer for brightness;
- 16-stepped know for contrast;
- external control of brightness and contrast;

- standard and inverted display;

- BAS-input (composite video);
- external synchronization separate f o r horizontal and v e r t i c a l
composite synchronization;
- external blanking (photographic display recording)

3. Construction

VM 1721 i s a complete plug-in monitor with remote-control operating

unit.

A l l important operating elements are e a s i l y accessible and c l e a r l y

marked. Mains cable and Manual are included in i t s d e l i v e r y .

4. Technical Data

see "Data Sheet"

5. Basic Operating Method

General Connection Diagram VM 1721: see annexes

5.1 Mains Voltages

By means of the rearside voltage selector (lO) the primary windings

of the mains transformer are adapted to the mains supply voltage of
110V- or 220V- .

5.2 Supply Voltages

Three linear variable-voltage regulators serve to deliver the required
supply voltages of +24V, +12V and -8V.

5.3 Video Amplifier

From the video input (which can be switched to 750 or else serve a further
750-instrument via the parallel-connected video outlet socket) the video
signal arrives at the high-impedance d i f f e r e n t i a l video-pre-amplifier.

IMS2000
Section 8.18.1 10/10/95
International Medical Systems, Inc.
Documentation Monitor Rev. 1-6
VM 1721

With potentiometer "ADJUST" (2) on the f r o n t panel the video input

voltage can be adapted from 0.5...2Vpp. T r a n s i s t o r T5 buffers the
non-inverted video signal to the 16-stepped contrast controller (3)

Black-level clamping i s done after contrast adjustment. Line and picture

retrace are blanked via blanking a m p l i f i e r . The video output amplifier
serves to amplify the signal to the level required for drive of the
picture tube cathode.

5.4 Gl-Amplifier
The Gl-amplifier i s controlled via "Brightness potentiometer" (4)
and supplies the corresponding voltage f o r brightness control to the
Gl of the picture tube. For luminous spot suppression (when switching
the monitor o f f ) the Gl-amplifier i s c o n t r o l l e d negatively.

5.5 Sync Signal Separation

From the inverted video signal the sync separator receives the sync
pulses for horizontal, and v e r t i c a l d e f l e c t i o n . By the t r a i l i n g edge
of the H-sync a monoflop i s triggered whose output pulse i s used
for black-level clamping. However, the sync signals may also be
fed externally.

5.6 Vertical Deflection

The v e r t i c a l sync pulses t r i g g e r a normally free-running sawtooth
generator which drives the v e r t i c a l d e f l e c t i o n amplifier via a l i n e a r -
ization network.

5.7 The horizontal sync pulses synchronize v i a a pulse former a

normally free-running pulse generator with phase-lock loop which
switches the line deflection plus high-voltage generation by means
of a b u f f e r .

5.8. High-Voltage Generation

In the secondary windings of the line transformer the auxiliary voltages
to operate the picture tube are generated by r e c t i f i c a t i o n . The high-
voltage i s f i l t e r e d and measured in a HV-CR-network. For s t a b i l i z a t i o n

of the picture s i z e , the high-voltage i s kept constant by a regulating

amplifier.

5.9 Picture Tube Unit

To ensure the shortest possible connection between video output amplifier
and picture tube, the video output amplifier i s f i t t e d on top of the
picture tube u n i t . Overvoltage arrestors f o r the individual grids protect
the other electronic parts in case of high-voltage flashovers in the
picture tube.

6. Preparatory Instructions

6.1 Unpacking and Repacking of Monitor and Accessories

After opening the upper side of the carton, the top 4 protection
corners are removed. Manual (with packing l i s t ) and plastic-packed
mains cable are taken out. Then the monitor (packed in i t s protective
p l a s t i c covering) i s carefuly pulled upwards out of the carton. Then
the p l a s t i c protection i s removed. Repacking i s done i n reverse order.

6.2 Preparatory Measures f o r Monitor Operation

When i n s t a l l i n g the monitor, at least 5cm space must be l e f t between i t s
sides and neighbouring objects; besides, the v e n t i l a t i n g s l o t s for a i r i n g
the monitor must not be covered up.

To ensure good function of the monitor, the ambient temperature must be

between +15°C and +45°C.

6.3 Getting ready f o r Operation

6.3.1 The monitor must not be switched on d i r e c t l y a f t e r transport as
condensation during the warming-up period of the cold instrument might
impair an irreproachable function of - in particular - the high-voltage
element;
This monitor may not be used i n areas exposed to possible danger of
explosion. If i t i s used in the so-called "dangerous areas" of anaesthetic
rooms and i f there are ignitionable anaesthetics used simultaneously, the
p o s s i b i l i t y of an explosion cannot be excluded.

IMS2000 Section 8.18.1

International Medical Systems, Inc. 10/10/95
Documentation Monitor Rev. 1-8
-VM 1721

For explosion-endangered areas: see instruction sheet M639 of

"Berufsgenossenschaft fiir Gesundheitswesen und Wohlfahrtspflege,
Hamburg".

6.3.2 Mains Voltage

Before connecting the monitor, the existing mains voltage must be
compared to the value shown on the mains voltage selector
The monitor i s factory-adjusted to 220V (198-242V) and i s accordingly
f i t t e d with two fuses type T0.5/250B. For operation from a 110V—
supply (99-121V-) the mains connector must be disconnected and the
fuses be exchanged for two types T1/250B. Voltage selector has to be
adjusted to 110V- by means of a screwdriver.

6.3.3 After having followed the above instructions the monitor i s

connected to the mains supply v i a mains cable (9) . The monitor has
protective grounding (the protective conductor,is also f i t t e d into
the mains cable. An adequate safety plug must be used f o r mains connec-
tion.

6.3.4 Signal connection

The monitor has a rearside BNC-video input socket (s) and also a
BNC-video output socket (j) , to which the input signal i s looped-
through. By switch ( 8 ) the internal terminating impedance has to be
added i f no further 75Q-consuming instrument i s connected to Q7
must be set to "HIGH" and the
end of the loop-through chain must be terminated with 75Q i n order
to avoid cable r e f l e c t i o n s and faulty signal levels which would r e s u l t
in image defects.
Video Monitor VM 1721 i s factory-set for internal synchronization
(composite video s i g n a l ) .

7. Operating Instructions

7. 1 Safety Measures

The monitor i s an instrument of safety category I/VDE 0750 and i s

safe from touch as per c l a s s i f i c a t i o n type B. It may only be ope-
rated in rooms where the e l e c t r i c a l i n s t a l l a t i o n corresponds to
VDE-rules 0107; see also para 6.3.1 to 6.3.3.

If during operation any safety-impairing defects are detected,

they must be remedied immediately.

7.2 Layout of Operating Elements

For operating elements and mains connection see page 7

7.3 Preparations

7.3.1 Location of i n s t a l l a t i o n

Luminance of the screen i s s u f f i c i e n t to ensure image reproduction

of high contrast even i n illuminated rooms. However, each foreign
light additionally brightening the screen lessens the picture q u a l i t y .
For i n s t a l l a t i o n of the monitor we recommend to avoid bright l i g h t
sources to shine d i r e c t l y onto the screen or else to darken the room.

Viewing distance: For objective value, 3 to 6 times the value of the

screen diagonal can be assumed. Within t h i s range,
the line grid normally i s no longer v i s i b l e .

7.3.2 Input Signals

The monitor has been factory-adjusted f o r a composite video signal
lVpp at 30% sync-signal, 625 lines/50Hz or 525 lines/60Hz resp. frame
repetition frequency, or to the standard specified by the customer.
However, video input voltage can be adapted from 0.5...2Vpp by means
of potentiometer @ "ADJUST".

IMS2000

VM 1721

The video-preamplifier i s provided as d i f f e r e n t i a l input, i . e .

the monitor may, for example, be connected to a different mains
voltage that the signal source. Thanks to the high common-mode
rejection r a t i o of the input a m p l i f i e r s , f a u l t voltage between
both mains voltages i s avoided. However, max. fault voltage
should not exceed 10V-.

7.3.6 Preparatory adjustments

a) In order to make f u l l use of the contrast switch, the monitor has

been factory-adjusted to a video input signal of lVpp. In case of
values d i f f e r i n g within a range of 0.5Vpp, adjustment i s effected
by means of the frontpanel potentiomenter "ADJUST" ( J ) : picture
source (e.g. ultrasonic scanner) i s switched to greyscale display,
brightness potentiometer and contrast switch are turned to right-hand
stop. Then potentiometer "ADJUST" (2) i s so adjusted that the
lightest shade of grey can s t i l l be c l e a r l y distinguished from
the next darker shade; then adjust brightness and contrast accor-
dingly.
b) Normally, the monitor has been set to a frame r e p e t i t i o n frequency
of 625 lines/50Hz and 525 lines/60Hz respectively, or i n accordance
with the video standard specified by the customer.

If the standard has to be changed, a service technician can do so

by means of the internal potentiometers.

operator and the surroundings are possibly impaired by the linkage
in question.

7.4 Viewing of the screen image

The monitor i s factory-adjusted to the correct picture size and

position as well as to optimum reproduction of the grey steps
with brightness and contrast potentiometer in mid-position.How-
ever, in accordance with individual requirements and l i k i n g ,
these values can be varied in a wide range. It i s recommended,
however, to adjust these control elements in such manner that a l l
shades of - for instance - a displayed greyscale are v i s i b l e as
part of the total p i c t u r e .
It must be taken into consideration that i n case of viewing at
too great a brightness and contrast the picture tube's l i f e expec-
tation i s reduced accordingly.

MODIFICATION FOR VIDEO RASTER LINE SUPPRESSION OF
DOCUMENTATION MONITOR.

INTRODUCTION

The IXX:U1VI#JTATI0N MONITOR or Hardcopy Camera is a high quality, small CRT display tube and
electronics for the express purpose of exposing a film for long term image archiving. TheJHardcopy
Camera system displays a standard RSI70a monochrome video image when it comes from the factory and
as such will show the retrace or video raster lines on the exposed film.

PURPOSE

To eliminate the raster lines from the film, the display video signal that goes to the hardcopy camera when
the hardcopy key is pressed is modified to a new vertical timing. The video signal measured will be four
times as long in the vertical timing pulse than with a standard RSI70a video signal. The horizontal timing
does not change during this time. The new video time is 66.4 ms from vertical pulse to vertical pulse. The
display when viewed by the naked eye seems to flash or roll but the film will integrate this and thus
eliminate the raster lines from the image and give sharp, clean films for archiving without annoying black
lines across the image.

Z1024 HIGH LINE RATE VIDEO DISPLAY FOR DOCUMENTATION MONITOR

The IMS2000 Video Image Processor has special produce video output sync timing required for the
documentation monitor to suppress video raster lines. In addition to the Image Processor board, special
software routines are needed for control of the Image Processor board.

DOCUMENTATION MONITOR MODIFICATION

This modification consists of the replacement of the capacitor C42 with a new value of 1.8 nF on power
supply +V deflection board. This will cause the monitor Vertical deflection timing to change.
The +V Deflection board is located in the documentation monitor case assembly mounted on the left side of
the CRT chassis.

Figure 8.18-3 shows the location of components in the Documentation monitor system.
Figure 8.18-4 shows the physical location of the capacitor C42 on the +Vertical Deflection board.
Figure 8.18-5 shows Power supply +V Deflection adjustment potentiometers.
Figure 8.18-6 shows Power Supply +V Deflection board schematic and circuit location of C42.

FUNCTIONAL CONTROL SIGNAL DESCRIPTION

When you insert a cassette into the hardcopy camera, the cassette sensing switch connected to X7 on
keyboard interface board is activated, IC7 on U108 board is reset and ready light for video image camera is
lit(field indication L E D # 40) on monitor cart keyboard. Push record button 39 on monitor cart keyboard
(see figure 8.18-1).

When you press the record button, the C P U scans the keyboard matrix and decodes the hardcopy record
button. This sends a high signal from connector JO pin 14 of the I/O board to pin 9 of U l via Keyboard
interface connector X I pin 14. Pin 8 of U l then gives a low to K l relay. This turns K l relay on. This low
is a 250 ms pulse from the I/O card. The normally open contact of K l closes shorting X 6 pins 15,16 on
the keyboard interface board. This cable from X6 goes to U108 board X 2 connector on the side of the
hardcopy camera. The momentary closure of K l sets IC14 to a count of "16". As soon as the contact
opens with the next V pulse, IC14 counts down 16 V-pulses (16 x 66.4 ms = 1062.4 ms), the CRT
monitor is unblanked, "monitor on". At the same time, IC12 and IC13 clock inputs are cleared.

When the counters IC12and IC13 have counted down to zero, exposure ends, monitor is blanked and IC7
blocks the input of the exposure button to prevent a further exposure. To reset the counter IC7, the cassette
has to be removed and reinserted. At the end of the exposure, a signal is sent out on X5 pin 1 and pin 2.
The cable connected between X5 of U108 and X6 of U109 is polarity sensitive. Pin 1 of X5 must go to
pin 1 of X6. This cable connects the hardcopy camera timeout to U109 board to allow the computer to
sense the end of exposure by hardcopy camera. Failure to have this cable connected will cause premature
termination of the hardcopy printing cycle. The result could be horizontal sync lines or a faint image
appearing on the film.
