ASHIDA UNDER / OVER FREQUENCY RELAY
TYPE AUOFMR2.
GENERAL: -
ASHIDA under frequency Relay is designed to suit load
conditions of Indian electrical utilities. This is designed using
micro-controller technology & hence has inherent advantages
over other electromagnetic type relays. Transmission
equipment’s nature of the disturbed loads over long distance
makes difficult to control them. Overload results in the form of
fall in frequency. By using this relay, for monitoring the
frequency of supply at distribution centres, gives efficient load
control.

FEATURES: -
• No mechanical springs, screws, torque are involved & hence
it is vibration / impact proof.
• Relay control is software based & hence it resets instantly
(returns to supervisory). Digital display & keyboard setting is
provided on front panel for setting of frequency, delay time,
date etc.
• Display Frequency resolution is of 0.01Hz with accuracy of +
0.01Hz.
• Two independent set points with independent control
contacts.
• Both set points can be adjusted as Over or Under frequency.
• Separate reset frequency control.
• Computer interface - RS232 and RS485.

WORKING AND PRINCIPLE: -

The electronic solid state circuit works on Auxiliary Supply (i.e.
85 – 250V DC). The incoming PT supply is used for frequency
sensing. The sensed frequency is converted in to square wave
using electronic circuit. These pulses are then applied to
µ-controller which measures the time between two zero
crossings. This time is then used to calculate frequency. The
CPU compares the present frequency with set points stored in
non-volatile memory. There are two separate set point which can
be set anywhere in between 40.00Hz to 65.00Hz independently.
The set point which is less then 50.00Hz is treated as under
frequency set point and the set-point which is more than
50.01Hz is treated as over frequency set point. There are also
two separate time setting corresponding to trip setting. As soon
as the frequency crosses any of the set point, the CPU starts the
corresponding timer and after the time delay the CPU gives trip
command to electromechanical relay.

The unit remains in operating state till the frequency is
under/over of the reset point, depending upon type of set point.
All settings are stored into special non-volatile memory and
remains unaffected even in the absence of power supply for more
than 10 years.
Electrical Noise Immunity: -
Utility and industrial envouriments are electrically very noisy.
Electronics protection equipment requires careful design and
testing to ensure reliable operation in switchgear. Ashida’s
expertise & experience of more than 28 years in field of
electronics design is employed to avoid nuisance tripping of
AUOFMR2.
Self Testing: -
One of the advantages of µ-controller is the ability to perform self
diagnostics of internal hardware. The AUOFRM2 performs
continuous self-checks of critical components and entire
hardware at POWER-ON and every RESET operation. Tests are
performed on all volatile and non-volatile memories, power
supply voltages, real time clock, as well as other electronics
components to ensure proper functioning of the relay. The relay
generates different messages if any failure is detected.
Setting Reliability: -
Any numerical or digital relay in which all setting are
programmable via key board or communication port, uses some
internal memory to store these settings. Many relays use internal
rechargeable batteries to maintain these settings. In case of
power supply fluctuation, batteries are often unreliable, and
settings get corrupted. In such a situation the relay may
maloperate. Ashida uses special non-volatile memory technology,
which does not require any power source to maintain settings of
the relay. Once the relay is programmed, it maintains the
settings for more than 10 years even in the absence of any power
supply. In case, if internal fault is detected in this section during
the self diagnosis, then relay gives message and takes default
setting stored in programmed memory to avoid any mal-
operation.

FUNCTION DESCRIPTION: -
The unit is having several display function used for man-machine
interface. The following table gives brief description of different display
functions. By using MODE push button the display function can be
changed. The default function is F1, which displays line frequency. If by
using mode switch, the unit is left indicating some other function, then
after some time the relay will automatically switch over to default
functions.

FUNCTIONS DESCRIPTION
F1 Displays Line frequency.
F2 Displays set point 1-the set point can be changed by
using “↑”[increment]& “↓”[decrement] keys. The range of
setting is 40.00 to 65.00 Hz. All settings are done in
foreground. (Note1).
F3 Reset frequency (Hysterisis) The setting range is 0.10 Hz
to 5.00 Hz The actual reset frequency = setting F2 +/-
hysterisis F3.

ON LINE TESTING FACILITY: -
Solid state electronics design makes the relay immune to mechanical
vibrations or environmental ageing degradation. This makes AUOFMR2
relay almost maintenance free. The normal safety checks & time
grading of circuits is the major functional requirement of the relay. To
serve these two purpose, AUOFMR2 relay is equipped with special on-
line (in-situation) testing facility. Push buttons marked TEST & BYPASS
are provided on the front panel to check the relay functioning. These are
accessible after removing the front dust cover. TEST Push button is used
to check calibration of the unit. By pressing this PB internally generated
62.5Hz frequency signal gets connected as input & the display will show
62.5Hz. If one of the set point is in between 50 Hz and 62 Hz then that
set point is treated as over frequency set point and the relay picks up.
After the set time delay the relay gives trip command which also changes
the state of output contact. The BYPASS button is provided to avoid
tripping of external circuit. By pressing BYPASS button the output
contacts get isolated which avoids interruption to the external circuit.
Trip command can be observed by TRIP LED.

TESTING PROCEDURE: -
• Give 85 – 250V DC supply to Aux. Supply of Relay.
• Connect the AC supply to PT input terminal of the relay.
• If the set Frequency 1 is 47.00Hz, delay time set 1 is 10 secs
& Set Frequency 2 is 58.00Hz with time delay set 2 of 5secs.
• Press MODE switch till you get Function F2. The display
shows previous frequency. For setting 47.00Hz frequency
use ↑ ↓ keys.
• Press the MODE switch to get function F4 that shows
previous Set Frequency 2. Then set 58.00Hz frequency using
↑ ↓ keys.
• Press the MODE switch to get function F6 that shows time
delay for Set Frequency 1. Adjust it to 10 seconds using ↑ ↓
keys.
• Press the MODE switch again to get function F7 that shows
time delay for Set Frequency 2. Adjust it to 5 seconds.
• When the input frequency drops to 47.00Hz, ‘Fault 1’ LED
will glow. The delay time is set for 10sec, after completion of
which, relay will trip & TRIP LED glows. When input
frequency crosses 58.00 Hz, ‘Fault 2’LED glows. After
completion of delay time, relay will trip & LED glows. (This
can also be checked by using TEST push buttons).
