I. Introduction

Human trafficking is an over-the-boundary and local criminal activity that lures and exploits

people into employment situation and exploitation against their will. Human trafficking affects

the community at large and is thus the responsibility of the society to establish systems that can

help in case of suspected trafficking activity.

II. Body

1. Children and women are the most victimized by human trafficking.

a) Children who run away from their homes to the streets fall victims to human trafficking,

especially in Chicago. Wgn radio states that 300 thousand children are trafficked every

year in Chicago.

b) Women who are Chicago natives are also trafficked. Cook, in particular, dominates in

women trafficking. Durchslag & Goswami states that 24,000 women are involved in sex

trafficking each day across Cook County (2008).

2. Poverty is the primary cause of sex trafficking.

a) Retail sex workers are lured from their native countries after promises of a legit job and

legal status.

b) According to Rafael and Ashley (2008), the majority of young women fall into sex

trafficking after family abandonment. They are vulnerable to human trafficking as they

need shelter and money.

3. The community plays a significant role in preventing human trafficking.

a) Community surveillance through the formation of women’s groups assists the victims of

human trafficking upon rescue.

b) Students’ clubs harness peer support and provide a neutral forum to help students who

may be vulnerable to human trafficking.

c) Community intervention in preventing human trafficking may act as a control mechanism

to the freedom of women.

III. Conclusion

Human trafficking is a menace to both human rights and social welfare. It is necessary for the

government and the society to work together and confront the exploitation of needy women at

both the local and global level.
