Folds in seismic sections
Normal faults
Recognizing and interpreting faults in seismic section
1) Fault cutoffs — terminations of reflections or abrupt changes of reflection
attributes (e.G., Amplitude, polarity) at fault surfaces.
2) Terminations of fold limbs or kink bands
3) Direct fault-plane reflections, produced by changes in velocity and density
across or within fault zones.

Abrupt terminations (cutoffs)

and duplications of prominent
reflections constrain the
position of a gently dipping
thrust fault.
Downward terminating kink band (2)
defines the position of a gently dipping
thrust

Downward terminating kink band (2) and

fault-plane reflection (3) define the
position of a thrust fault that shallows to
an upper detachment
Exercise 1
Faults in the lower section are interpreted using:
Cutoffs (1), kink-band terminations (2), and fault-plane reflections (3). Note how a
series of cutoffs and kink-band terminations can corroborate, and be used to
extrapolate beyond, the fault-plane reflections.
Recognizing detachments
Detachments are faults that run along bedding or other stratigraphic
horizons, and thus generally are horizontal or dip at low angles.
Detachments are generally not imaged directly on seismic sections.

The detachment is
located at the base of a
single thrust thrust ramp
Regional detachment forms the base of several thrust ramps
1 Fault slip causes folding of the hanging wall
block
2 Progressive fault slip widens both kink bands
3 Material from the back limb is refolded onto the
crest and the front limb kink-band B-B is
translated along the upper detachment.
