JOHN CRANE (EAA) CODING SYSTEM

Two types of codes are used:


i) A 16 character code to specify seal units known as the Header Code.
Oblique slashes, used as field delineators, are required to enable the database
to interpret the code being used so they must appear in the Header Code for
complete seals.

ii) A 10 character code for components.

Standard seals

The following format is used for standard seals:

Seals with special components

For seals with any special component parts a format incorporating a specific Drawing
Number or "Parts List Number" is used.
Formatting is similar to Standard Seals but the Seat type cannot be entered in the
Header Code.

Only a Drawing Number with a maximum six digit alphanumeric code can be entered
using this format. In most cases this number is the same as the Drawing Number on a
general arrangement (GA).

For American seal drawings where the numbering system has more than 6 digits an
'A' or 'AA' number is raised to enable the code to be entered using the above format.
These are issued on a sequential basis as required with the master list of these held in
the Coding Department.

Engineering Design Standards EDS 0008 (Drawing Identification System) and EDS
0208 (List of EAA Country Identity Codes) define the permissible formats.

A "Parts List Number" (an 'L' or 'LL' number) is allocated on a sequential basis when
required for any seal with non standard parts that is not to an American drawing. The
master list is held in Coding Department with details of variation required, any
applicable component or GA drawing numbers and Customer details where relevant.

Examples of how this coding system is applied range from the use of a non approved
seat in a seal to defining different material combinations for a seal that uses the same
adaptive hardware. Hence a GA will sometimes list a range of 'LL' numbers to enable
a single arrangement drawing for many material combinations or an 'LL' number will
define the seal code for replacement ordering purposes when full adaptive hardware
for complete installation is not required.

These Header Codes can then be entered using the same format as above.

Code breakdown - Seals

Size: 4 digit - all numeric code

Quoted in millimetres to one decimal (inch sizes are converted to millimetres) and put
in format as below with forth digit as decimal place.

Examples:
3mm = 0030 30mm = 0300 300mm = 3000 3.5mm = 0035
1 inch is 25.4mm = 0254 2 3/8" = 0603

Seal Type: up to 4 digits - made up of different alphanumeric combinations

Seal types can be:


i) All numeric codes of one, two, three or four digits.
ii) A one, two or three digit numeric codes plus an alpha.
iii) A combination of numeric and alpha digits.

Seal Variant: 2 digit - alpha code

This is used to define various options within a seal type or when a standard seal is
modified slightly.

Examples:
For a seal with half width face in place of standard face the code FH is put in this
field.
Within the 5600 Series for a standard quench with rotating seat a variant code of SQ
is used or for a standard quench with rotating head the variant code becomes HQ.

A full list of approved variant codes is held and maintained by Coding Department.
Some are specific to a seal type, others apply generally across a range of seals.

The variant field can be used to identify different material specifications as an


alternative to a "Parts List Number".
This practice is used by several European Companies to designate several material
combinations on a single GA or options within a seal type. These uncontrolled
variants are not included in the approved listing maintained by Coding Department.
Such variants are normally 2 digit numbers and are specific to that individual record.

Therefore the same number can mean different materials or options in different seal
types.

Seat: 1 or 2 digit - alpha code

For single alpha seats the second digit is left blank.

Group Material Code: 4 digit - 3 numeric and 1 alpha known as "BR1C1 codes"

Materials of construction of a seal are designated by "BR1C1 codes" were each letter
donates the material for an element used in a seal. (For example: B = Medium Nitrile
Rubber).

Originally a 5 digit alphanumeric code for parts in seal as below:

B = flexible member
R = face or primary ring
1 = metal parts
C = seat or mating ring
1 = springs

An extra character was added at the start of the code to distinguish differences in
flexible member for face and seat, to create an alphanumeric code of 6 digits for parts
in seals. (Sometimes this extra character is used even if there is no difference between
materials for the face and seat flexible members) as below:

B = flexible member for face (in a Bellows Seal this is the Bellows material)
B = flexible member for seat
R = face or primary ring
1 = metal parts
C = seat or mating ring
1 = springs

For double seals "BR1C1 code" for Inboard Seal is given before "BR1C1 code" for
Outboard Seal.
For cartridge seals the coding is expanded to include main materials used for the
cartridge as well as the seal. These are given in parentheses between details of the
Inboard and Outboard Seals.

The various combinations of materials are allocated Group Material Codes of 3


numeric and 1 alpha to use in Seal Header Codes.

The Coding Department maintains a database of approved EAA codes. It currently


contains over 6000 Group Material Codes and continues to grow as new combinations
are requested.

All components have a unique part reference number of 10 characters.

Code breakdown – components

Standard parts:

Size: 4 digit - all numeric code

Quoted in millimetres as for seal size.

Part Number: 3 digit - all numeric or 1 alpha and 2 numeric

This is known as a Part (Mid) Code or "shape code". The Standards Group within
Engineering Section issue and maintain a table of valid allocated codes including the
drawing number for each component.

Examples:
Code 301 is a Socket Head Cap Screw.
Code A99 is a Segmental Bush with Garter Spring.
Code D99 is a ‘PG’ Seat.

Material Code: 3 digit - all numeric code

This identifies the material used to manufacture a component.

Various codes are used for specific grades of material, coatings to materials or
combinations of materials. Many are general codes used across the full range of seals
but some codes are seal specific.

Examples:
Code 001 is Stainless Steel (Type 316)

Code 031 is Chrome Oxide Spray on Stainless Steel (Type 316)
Code 547 is API 682 Carbon
Code 598 is 001/547 – i.e. Stainless Steel (Type 316) and API 682 Carbon

Therefore Part Number 0254/A99/598 is a 1 inch Segmental Bush in API 682 Carbon
with a Stainless Steel Garter Spring.

A small number of specific material codes have more general meanings.

199 = Crane non-standard material as specified on drawing


951 = Bought out product to Manufacturer Standard Specification
961 = Bought out product, non standard material as specified on drawing

The Materials Group within Engineering Section issue and maintain a table of valid
codes. This can be found on the EAA Intranet.

Special Parts to EAA Drawings:

Country of Origin of Drawing: 1 or 2 digit - alpha code

A few common examples:


S = John Crane UK, Slough
W = John Crane UK, Trafford Park
I = John Crane Italy

Drawing Number: 5 digit - all numeric or 1 alpha and 4 numeric

When 1 alpha and 4 numeric the alpha is part of the Country of Origin code.

Reference Number of Part: 1 digit - numeric code

Where the drawing is for a single component in one size reference 1 is always used.
For drawings with more than one size of a component or multiple components the
specific number is quoted from the drawing.

Material Code: 3 digit - all numeric

This identifies the material as for standard parts above.

Special Parts to American Drawings:

For American component drawings where the numbering system has more than 6
digits an 'A' or 'AA' number is raised to enable the code to be entered using the above
format. The American 4 digit material code is converted to the equivalent EAA 3 digit
material code to fit this format.

These numbers are issued on a sequential basis as required with the master list of
these held in the Coding Department.

Common Components:

O Rings:

Imperial:

Standard Imperial sizes have mid code 123.

The first 4 characters are used to donate the size for British Standard Number or
Dowty International Inch Range Numbers.

Examples:
B. S. 233 is code 2330/123
Dowty Number 641 is code 6410/123

Material code as for other components.

Metric:

Metric sizes are coded as follows:

1st character Identification letter – R


2nd to 5th characters Internal diameter (I. D.) to one decimal place in millimetres
6th to 7th characters Section diameter in millimetres
8th to 10th characters Material code

Example:
A 36.25mm I. D. O Ring with 3.5mm section in Medium Nitrile Rubber would be
coded as R/0363/35/130.

Special Materials:

For O Rings in materials that do not have an approved 3 digit material code a material
code of 199 is used and a drawing produced to give details of size and material.

Examples:
B. S. 275 O Ring in Kalrez 4079 is S/48822/2/199.
B. S. 275 O Ring in Viton grade N80W is W/29062/5/199.

Rubber Cord and Strip

Various diameters of commonly used cord have been allocated Part (Mid) codes as
below:

Code 401 is 0.135"/0.143" (1/8") 3.53mm cross section.


Code 402 is 0.205"/0.215" (3/16") 5.34mm cross section.

Code 403 is 0.269"/0.281" (1/4") 6.99mm cross section.

Full code is generated in standard part format as follows:

Length of cord - a 4 digit all numeric code generated by converting length in inches
to millimetres quoted to the nearest whole millimetres.

Part (Mid) Code - number as allocated for a particular cross section of cord.

Material Code as for other components.

Examples:
0.135"/0.143" diameter Medium Nitrile cord of length 10 3/8" is 0263/401/130.
0.269"/0.281" diameter Fluorocarbon cord of length 27 1/4" is 0692/403/134.

Fasteners:

i) Bolts and screws:

The code for is generated as follows:

First 4 characters are made up of thread size code (first 2 digits) and length code (last
2 digits).

See "Thread Size Code Table" and "Length Code Table - Bolts and Screws" for
details.

Part (Mid) Code as allocated.

Material Code as material list.

These codes are issued and maintained by Coding Department.

Examples:
7810/301/001 is a socket head cap screw with 5mm metric coarse thread and 10mm
length in stainless steel.
3505/305/033 is a socket set cup point screw with 1/4" UNC thread and 5/8" length in
Hastelloy C.

ii) Nuts and Eyebolts:

Thread size as for bolts and screws from "Thread Size Code Table" followed by two
zeros when length code is not applicable.

Examples:
0400/319/001 is a self-locking nut with 3/8" BSW thread.
2400/320/001 is a standard hexagonal nut with No. 10 UNF thread.
8400/345/001 is an eyebolt with 16mm metric coarse thread.

iii) Plugs:

For most plugs thread size as for bolts and screws from "Thread Size Code Table"
followed by two zeros when length code is not applicable.

Examples:
6100/318/153 is a 1/2" NPT threaded plug in LD Polyethylene.
6100/346/052 is a 1/2" NPT threaded plug in Austenitic stainless steel of 18/8 Class.
4400/346/001 is a 1/8" BSP Taper threaded plug in stainless steel.

API Plugs:

Q23 Mid Code is metal plug with NPT thread where the size is generated by giving
the size (as for Imperial screw lengths) in 1/8" followed by two zeros.
Detailed on drawing S/49031.

Examples:
0100/Q23/001 is a 1/8" NPT threaded plug in stainless.
0400/Q23/033 is a 1/2" NPT threaded plug in Hastelloy C.

Washers:

As washers have no thread a nominal size is generated from the "Size Code
Conversion Table".

Examples:
0063/316/001 is a 1/4" BS washer (Plain).
0190/315/001 is a 3/4" BS washer (Chamfered).
0120/347/001 is a 12mm Form A metric washer.
0160/348/001 is a 16mm Form B metric washer.

Spring Washer (Mid Code 328):

This type of washer is coded by taking the thread size over which the washer fits from
the "Tread Size Code Table" and adding two zeros to make the 4 digit size code.

Examples:
3500/328/001 is a stainless steel spring washer for a 1/4" UNC thread bolt.
7900/328/001 is a stainless steel spring washer for a 6mm metric thread bolt.

Working practice has resulted in this inconsistent coding system becoming


predominant in databases so it has been adopted as the norm for this item.

Pins:

Various types of pins have been allocated Part (Mid) Codes as below:

Code 312 is a Split Pin


Code 317 is a Solid Pin

Code 344 is a Spirol H. D. Pin

First 4 characters are made up of diameter code (first 2 digits) and length code (last 2
digits). When determining this size code the dimensions must be totally Imperial or
totally Metric.

i) Imperial Series Pins:

Diameter code is generated in increments of 1/32" (coded as 01) up to a maximum of


1 9/16" (coded as 50).

Length code is generated in increments of 1/16".

ii) Metric Series Pins:

Diameter code is generated in increments of 1mm by giving diameter of part in


millimetres and adding 50. Hence sizes range from 1mm (coded as 51) up to a
maximum of 20mm (coded as 70).

Length code is generated in increments of 2mm up to pin length of 40mm.


For pins over 40mm in length the code is generated in increments of 5mm.

Using this coding system various pins are available in the range of set lengths in
millimetres given below:
4,5,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22,24,26,28,30,35,40,50,55,60,65,70,75,80,85,90,95,100,120.

Each specific diameter of pin will only be in a certain range from these lengths.

Any other special lengths will be raised to a specific drawing.

Hexagonal Socket Keys (Allen Keys):

Size code is generated by taking the width across the flats of the hexagon in
millimetres to one decimal place (inch sizes are converted to millimetres) and put in
format as below with forth digit as decimal place.
The "Size Code Conversion Table" gives these sizes where appropriate.

Examples:
0040/321/050 is 4.0mm A/F Allen key in high tensile steel.
0031/321/050 is 1/8"
0142/321/050 is 9/16"

LENGTH CODE TABLE - BOLTS AND SCREWS

The length code is the last two digits of the size code. Two systems are used for Imperial and Metric
threads.

i) Imperial
"Length Code" for items with Imperial threads is generated in 1/8" increments.
Hence 1/8" (coded 01) to 11 1/8", maximum length allowed for in this coding system, (coded 89).
Coding for some intermediate sizes in 1/16's and 1/32's have been raised to cover additional
requirements as required.
Hence for code reference number 90 and above refer to table for interpretation of length.

ii) Metric

"Length Code" for items with metric threads is generated as follows:


Up to 20mm in 1mm increments, then by 5mm increments up to 250mm, maximum length in this
coding system.
Hence 1mm (coded 01) to 20mm (coded 20) and 25mm (coded 21) to 250mm (coded 66).
Coding for some additional lengths have been raised to cover additional requirements when required.
Hence for code reference number 67 and above refer to table for interpretation of length.

DIAMETER AND LENGTH CODE TABLES - PINS

Diameter Code

The diameter code is the first two digits of size code.

For Imperial sizes this is generated in increments of 1/32" (coded as 01) up to a maximum of 1 9/16"
(coded as 50).

For Metric sizes this is generated in 1mm increments and coded by adding 50 to the diameter in
millimetres.

duplication of codes between the two types.

Length Code

The length code is the last two digits of the size code. Two systems are used for Imperial and Metric
threads.

i) Imperial

"Length Code" for items with Imperial threads is generated in 1/16" increments.
Hence 1/16" (coded 01) to 6 3/16", maximum length allowed for in this coding system, (coded 99).

Up to 40mm in 2mm increments, then by 5mm increments up to 120mm, maximum length in this
coding system.
Hence 2mm (coded 01) to 40mm (coded 20) and 50mm (coded 22) to 120mm (coded 36).
Coding for some additional lengths have been raised to cover additional requirements when required.
Hence for code reference number 37 and above refer to table for interpretation of length.
