Research Proposal
It was an average Sunday afternoon in the small town of Miamisburg Ohio. Everyone
went about their day not knowing a tragedy was going to occur later that night. Around 10 pm on
Sunday, December 30th 2018 there was a targeted home invasion off the 100 block of North
First Street. Two armed individuals entered the apartment with the intent to rob the home. The
perpetrators then proceed to open fire upon those inside the apartment, sending one to the
hospital with serious injuries and killing my childhood friend, 18 year old Noah Kinser.
My parents first met Noah’s parents before either Noah or I were born. Samantha and
Ben Kinser were building their first house at the same time as my parents were building their
first house. Both of our families even had the same builder. The builder introduced Samantha
and my mom together because they were both pregnant at the time. Noah and I ended up
spending lots of time together in our childhood years, constantly playing at each others houses.
Around the second grade Noah began to play wee vikes football and I just stuck to baseball both
of us developing new sets of friends. Our parents still kept in touch, but only every once in a
while at neighborhood deck parties. By the time middle school came around Noah became a
cross country runner and started playing lacrosse while I actually just started to play football. At
2
that point we both played different sports that were in season at the same time and I rarely ever
saw him.
In high school Noah ran cross country but ended up dropping it later around sophomore
year and sticking to lacrosse. Meanwhile, I stuck to baseball and football. During high school I
found out that Noah began to smoke marijuana pretty often. I do not partake in smoking
marijuana, so at this point I was staying even farther from my old childhood friend. Next thing
you know Noah gets caught at school with marijuana in his bookbag planning to sell it. This was
shocking news to my class of sophomores at the time that he got in trouble for doing such a
thing. However, this instance did not stop Noah from selling marijuana and he proceeded to sell
marijuana for the next two years. He began to acquire so much of it , sell it in large quantities
and bring in large sums of money. Until recently, someone saw what he was doing and attempted
to rob him of his money and large amounts of marijuana he had obtained with a street value into
the thousands. Because of this greedy individual, Noah Kinser ends is shot and killed.
I have chosen my research question to be, “How would our nation benefit from the
legalization of marijuana?” because I truly believe if marijuana was legal my childhood friend,
18 year old Noah Kinser, would still be alive today and not die in the manner that he did. I know
that by legalizing marijuana the amount of violence in the legalized area decreases. Purchasing
marijuana comes with its own rules and guidelines in legalized regions, but people have the
ability to follow them and safely purchase it without it being an illegal narcotic on the black
market.
For my research assignment I will need to do further research in the specific numbers and
areas where there is decreasing rates of violence where marijuana is legal. I will mention the
3
medicinal benefits of marijuana and how it can be used in the medical field. I also need to look
into possible tax benefits where our government could control the sales of marijuana and bring in
an income off of it. In conclusion, my main three research questions that I will be doing further
research into are “How much does the violence rates decrease where marijuana is legal?”, “What
are the medical benefits of marijuana” and “How can our government benefit from the sales of
marijuana”
