Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine or release of air pressure or oil

pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To help prevent possible injury before testing and adjusting any air
system or hydraulic system, perform the procedure in the Testing and
Adjusting, "General Information" section.

When a slack adjuster strokes correctly, there is always a small amount of pressure on the piston in the service brakes after the brakes are released.

The following test covers the following pressures:

Pressure of the service brakes at the slack adjusters

Pressure of the service brakes at the wheels

Residual pressure for the service brakes at the wheels

Use the following procedure in order to check for a failure in a slack adjuster.

5. Connect a 6V-7830 Pressure Gauge (MULTIPLE GAUGE) to the pressure tap (4).

6. Repeat Step 5 for the other front wheel.

7. Start the engine. Operate the engine at LOW idle.

8. Move the transmission control to the NEUTRAL position.

Note: Allow enough time to pass in order to make sure that the service brake accumulator is fully charged.

9. Depress the service brake pedal in order to engage the brake.

Note: Check the pressure gauges. The pressure gauges at all four pressure taps (1), (2), (3), and (4) should register the same readings.

10. Release the brakes.

Note: Check the pressure gauges. The pressure gauges that are connected to pressure taps (3) and (4) near the purge valves on the wheels should show a residual pressure when the
service brakes are released.

11. The pressures from all four pressure taps (1), (2), (3), and (4) should be the same value.

The approximate oil pressure at the rear wheels should be 25 to 150 kPa (3.6 to 21.7 psi).

The approximate oil pressure at the front wheels should be 25 to 150 kPa (3.6 to 21.7 psi).

Note: Low residual pressure indicates a failed slack adjuster. High residual pressure may indicate a failed slack adjuster or warped brake discs. Rotate the wheel and check for pressure
fluctuations in order to determine if the brake discs are warped. The brake discs are probably warped if the pressure fluctuates. If the brake discs are warped, the brake discs should be
replaced.

12. If a problem is indicated, remove the slack adjuster. See the procedure in "Check of Small Piston Movement" for additional information.

Check of Small Piston Movement

Personal injury or death can result from air in the oil for the brake
hydraulic system.

Air in the system can prevent complete brake application and it is

possible that the wheels on the machine can not be stopped.

Air must not be in the oil for the brake hydraulic system to function
properly.

Illustration 5 g00336318
Check of small piston movement

1. Remove the piston from the housing.

2. Install a 6.35 mm (.250 inch) diameter by 31.8 mm (1.25 inch) long rod into the hole of the piston, as shown.

3. Use an 8S-2263 Spring Tester in order to check the movement of the small piston inside the piston.

4. Put the piston in the tester. Apply force on the rod, as shown.

5. If a force of 220 N (50 lb) is applied on the rod and the small piston does not move, replace the piston with a new piston.

6. If the slack adjuster is not damaged, check for damaged oil seals and for brake oil leakage in the brake piston seals.

Note: Purge the air from the brake oil circuit after you check the piston or you replace the piston. See Testing and Adjusting, "Brake System Air - Purge".
