History Of Pots
❖ Originally Called Thumb Pots
❖ One of the oldest forms of art and first form of creating art out of clay
❖ Date back almost 12,000 years.
❖ The pottery wheel was first created in Ancient Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq),and
the kilns were just large bonfires. The invention of this wheel really seemed to set
off a pottery trend throughout the world.
❖ No one is quite sure where the idea to actually glaze and color the pottery began,
but the idea added beauty to them.
❖ Native Americans first started forming pots out of clay due to their agricultural
needs, turning them into vessels to carry such things as seeds and collect water.
❖ Women were chief pottery makers, due to them being planters and gatherers in
these times. Soon, images of life, birds, and humans began appearing on these now
deemed works of art. Their beauty is simply meant to be enjoyed.
Effigy Jars
Mississippian culture
ended in the late 16th
century as the climate
changed and European
explorers brought
disease and political
turmoil. Effigy pots are
emblematic of the
cultures artistic
fluorescence and ritual
life.
Rim effigies, defined by the stylized
heads and tails that rise from a
pot's rim, are found throughout the
Southeast. They typically depict
birds common to the area or
toothy-mouthed cat-serpents,
creatures with a cat face and snake
tail that may represent underworld
monsters or spirits.
Animal effigies were made in the form
of bowls, jars, and bottles. They
portray frogs, conch shells, and other
creatures that have cultural meanings
derived from community myths and
narratives. Fish of all types were
important for Mississippians, and
bigmouth buffalo fish are a favored
form in effigy vessels.
