The Order of Engineers (order), with the support of the National Water and Sanitation Directorate, was
held on November 17, a lecture on the theme: Stories of storm drains in Maputo.

The lecture was given by Professor of the Faculty of the University Eduardo Mondlane Engineering
Alvaro Carmo Vaz, who speaking to an audience composed mainly of engineers and engineering
students, talked about the configuration of the metropolis and its drainage infrastructure from adécada
50 when part of what is now the city of Maputo was still swamp and beach up to the current times.
It referred to the period between 1960 and 1970, stating that in the meantime the metropolis
registouum explosive growth and had not yet been erected the great works of drainage of rainwater.
This only came about in the post-independence period, with the intervention of a Dutch company, DHV,
whose infrastructure built at the time came to solve most of the problems with which the city was
struggling, related to water management rainwater.

However, as made known the first president of the College, the situation came to decline in 2000 after
the occurrence of the floods that affected much of the hitherto built infrastructure and thus has
remained until the present day. An example of this is the Av. JuliusNyerere that, having been cut by the
2000 floods, its replacement only happened recently, after 16 years.

In this sense, describing the current situation, Professor considered the regression. He argued that the
current situation is the result of sprawl and poor urban management, which consists, among other
things, the disorderly occupation of urban land, lack of adequate infrastructure drainage and investment
for its construction, lack of maintenance and environmental education and the failure to solve problems
while they are small in size.

However, considers Professor Vaz that despite this situation, we are not dealing with a fatality, then,
though not easy, it is still possible to reverse this situation. During the meeting there was still room for
review and placement issues that have been readily answered by the speaker.
