ATS 1 out of 2 (2T)

Introduction
This application note is intended to give a simple solution for the ATS 1 OUT OF 2 between 2 transformers, which is
used frequently in power distribution networks. The use of the ATS system facilitates a quick action based on sensing
the incoming voltages of the facility and any additional faults that might occur. In this application we show the use of the
Zelio smart relay in performing an automatic action for ATS. Here we will show the program used, the different inputs
and outputs and the control circuit used with the Zelio smart relay for the ATS control. The use of Zelio helps in saving
cost, time and space in building our panels for ATS.

ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch)

The ATS application is used in different industrial facilities and buildings. It is used to help in automatic fast recovery of
power supply when having 2 main incomes. The function of our application is to monitor the voltage on the 2 main
transformers using 2 voltage sensors. Also we use our circuit breakers to get a signal (SDE) for having a short circuit in
our distribution network and to take the necessary action. Using Zelio in our application we will be able to either use
automatic mode or manual mode. The operating mode and fault alarm (short circuit alarm) will be displayed on the Zelio
LCD display. It is also possible to change the switching time for the 2 transformers through the front keys of the Zelio.

ATS Operation
The 2 transformers provide the power supply to the facility. Our function here is to control the closing and opening of the
2 CB’s (circuit breaker) for the 2 transformers. The most important condition is not to have the 2 CB’s closed at the same
time. To ensure the safety of operation there is different interlocks used either software or hardwire. We will control the
action of the breakers due to different input signals to the Zelio which indicate the state of the supply and the presence
of any faults. These input signals are:

1. Undervoltage signal Trans. 1: (UV1)

This signal is taken from an undervoltage sensor connected at transformer 1 to indicate the state of the incoming
voltage.
2. Undervoltage signal Trans. 2: (UV2)
This signal is taken from an undervoltage sensor connected at transformer 2 to indicate the state of the incoming
voltage.
3. Short Circuit CB 1: (SDE1)
This signal is taken from CB 1 to indicate the presence of a trip due to short circuit on the distribution network.
4. Short Circuit CB 2: (SDE2)
This signal is taken from CB 2 to indicate the presence of a trip due to short circuit on the distribution network.
5. CB 1 Feed Back: (CB1-FB)
This signal is taken from an auxiliary contact of CB 1 to indicate its status.
6. CB 2 Feed Back: (CB2-FB)
This signal is taken from an auxiliary contact of CB 2 to indicate its status.
7. Auto / Man
mode of operation to either Automatic or Manual mode.

The operation of the 2 transformers depends on the condition of the supply, which is detected using the undervoltage
sensors on the 2 transformers (UV1, UV2). The UV sensor gives a signal when there is a voltage present on the
transformer. If at the start the 2 UV sensors are ON, Transformer 1 will have the priority over Transformer 2 and CB 1 is
closed after a time (T1 = 5 sec) and a feedback signal from CB1-FB is ON. Then in case of supply failure on incoming
(1), the UV (1) signal is OFF and switching occurs with CB (1) is opened and CB (2) is closed after a time (T2 = 5 sec).
The system is then monitored all the time for UV and SDE signals to either switch the supply or open the 2 CB’s in case
of short circuit.
The overall operation can be controlled either automatically (Zelio smart relay) or manually by selecting the mode of
operation from the front keys of the Zelio. The mode of operation is displayed on the front display of the Zelio.

Faults
The system takes a signal from the CB to indicate a SDE fault (short circuit).
In this case the 2 CB’s are opened so that neither one of the Transformers is connected to the network. And a fault
message appears on the Zelio front display to indicate short circuit fault. Also there is software interlock to prevent the 2
CB’s to be connected both at the same time for safety. Following is the wiring for control circuit of the Zelio smart relay.
