NOTE
Insertion/extraction tools from ITT Cannon are all plastic; others are plastic with metal
tip.
NOTE
For installations on composite aircraft, ground planes must be considered. Conductive
wire mesh, radials, or thin aluminum sheets embedded in the composite material provide
the ground plane allowing the antenna pattern (gain) to be maximized for improved
transponder performance.
NOTE
Note that penetration of the pressure vessel on pressurized aircraft requires additional
data not included in this manual.
The following guidance provides information to aid the installer in ensuring the most optimum location is
selected for the transponder antenna.
The antenna mounting should utilize the aircraft manufacturers type certificated antenna location and style.
The antenna should be installed in accordance with manufacturer instructions and/or AC 43.12-2A
Chapter 3.
Transponder antenna considerations include the following.
• Be mounted away from major protrusions, such as engines, nacelles, propellers, and antenna masts
• Be as far as practical from landing gear doors, access doors, or other openings that could affect its
radiation pattern
• Must be mounted vertically on the bottom of the aircraft
• Must not be mounted within three feet of the ADF sense antenna or any other communication
antenna
• Must not be mounted within six feet of a DME antenna
• To prevent RF interference, the antenna must be mounted a minimum of three feet from the
GTX 3x5
3.8.2 GPS Antenna
The installation guidelines meet the intent of AC 20-138A Section 16. The greater the variance from these
guidelines, the greater the chance of decreased signal quality and availability. Meeting all of these
installation guidelines may not be possible on all aircraft. These guidelines are listed in order of
importance to achieve optimum performance. Items 3 to 5 below are of equal importance and their
significance may depend on the aircraft installation. The installer should use best judgment to balance the
installation guidelines.
1. The GPS antenna should be mounted as close to level as possible with respect to the normal cruise
flight attitude of the aircraft. If the normal flight attitude is not known, substitute with the
waterline, which is typically referenced as level while performing a weight and balance check. A
shim may be used to level the antenna.
2. The GPS antenna should be mounted in a location to minimize the effects of airframe shadowing
during typical maneuvers. Typically mounting farther away from the tail section reduces signal
blockage seen by the GPS antenna.
NOTE
When mounting a combination antenna, the recommended distance of two feet or more is
not applicable to the distance between the antenna elements of the combination antenna
(ex. GPS and COM, GPS and XM) provided the combination antenna is TSO authorized
and has been tested to meet Garmin’s minimum performance standards. See table 1-10 for
approved antennas.
4. The GPS antenna should be mounted no closer than two feet from any antennas emitting more than
25 watts. An aircraft EMC check can verify the degradation of GPS in the presence of potential
interference signals.
5. To minimize the effects of shadowing at 5° elevation angles, the GPS antenna must be mounted no
closer than nine inches (center to center) from other antennas, including passive antennas such as
another GPS or XM antenna.
6. To maintain a constant gain pattern and limit degradation by the windscreen avoid mounting the
antenna closer than three inches from the windscreen.
7. To achieve the best possible low-elevation antenna gain by minimizing pattern degradation due to
shadowing and near-field interaction a twelve inch center to center spacing between GPS antennas
is required. When practical, twelve inch center-to-center spacing must be used. If twelve inch
spacing is not practical, the maximum center-to-center spacing must be used, but never less than
nine inches. Spacing less than nine inches results in unacceptable antenna pattern degradation.

NOTE
For some antennas (e.g., GPS), verify the length is set for the desired cable loss before
trimming. Some antennas have minimum cable loss specifications, which may require a
cable that is longer than the physical run in the aircraft.
NOTE
If the aircraft structure is modified, refer to the applicable installation data.
See section ?? for drawing dimensions needed to prepare the mounting holes for the GTX 3x5 unit. The
GTX 3x5 mounting rack may also be used as a template for drilling the mounting holes.
1. Figure ?? shows the outline dimensions for the rack. Install the rack in a rectangular hole (or
appropriate gap between units) in the instrument panel. The lower front lip of the rack should be
flush with, or extend slightly beyond, the finished aircraft panel.
NOTE
If the front lip of the mounting rack is behind the surface of the aircraft panel, the GTX 3x5
connectors may not fully engage. See figure ?? for more information. Ensure that no screw
2. Install the rack in the aircraft panel using six #6-32 flat head screws and self locking nuts. The
screws are inserted from the inside through holes in the sides of the rack.
3. To attach the backplate to the rack, align the backplate so that the backplate screw heads pass
through the keyed holes in the back of the rack.
4. Slide the backplate to the left (viewing from the front of the unit) until it clicks into place. Secure
the backplate by tightening the four #4-40 screws.
4.5.2 Unit Insertion and Removal
NOTE
Prior to placing the unit in the rack, in order to ensure correct position of the retention
mechanism, it may be necessary to insert the hex drive tool into the access hole and turn
the drive tool counterclockwise until it completely stops.
CAUTION
The application of hex drive tool torque exceeding 15 in-lbs can damage the locking
mechanism.
Insertion
1. The GTX 3x5 unit is installed in the rack by sliding it straight in until it stops, approximately
3/8 inch short of the final position.
2. Insert a 3/32" hex drive tool into the access hole at the bottom of the unit face.
3. Turn the hex tool clockwise while pressing on the left side of the bezel until the unit is seated in the
rack
Removal
1. Insert the hex drive tool into the access hole on the unit face.
2. Turn hex drive tool counterclockwise until the hex drive tool stops.
3. Pull the unit from the rack.
4.5.3 Unit Replacement
Whenever the GTX 3x5 is removed or reinstalled, verify that it powers up successfully.

5.3 Power
The GTX 3x5 is compatible with 14 and 28 Vdc aircraft electrical systems. The AV PWR 2 input is for
connecting to an alternate power source, such as on an aircraft with two electrical buses.
The PWR CONFIG input is used to enable the remote on/off feature. This is typically connected to ground
for a remote unit installation and left open for a panel mount unit installation.
The PWR CONTROL input is dependent on the PWR CONFIG connection. This can be used as a remote
power on/off control or to enable the power “auto on” feature when the avionics master is turned on.
The PWR CONFIG and PWR CONTROL input function as described in the following table.
PWR PWR
Description
CONFIG CONTROL
Open Open Panel mount Auto on disabled, momentary power switch enabled
Open Ground Panel mount Auto on enabled, momentary power switch enabled
Ground Open Remote Power off
Ground Ground Remote Power on
The lighting bus input can be configured for 5 Vdc, 14 Vdc, 28 Vdc, or 5 Vac inputs.
When connecting the lighting bus input to a 5 VAC bus, use both the LTNG HI and LTNG LO inputs.
When connecting the light bus input to a DC input, use the LTNG HI input. The return is the unit ground
connection. LTNG LO should be left open.
5.5 Antennas
The Gray code inputs are pulled down for active, or open for inactive.
The GTX 3x5 includes internal isolation diodes on the gray code inputs to prevent the unit from pulling the
encoder lines to ground when the transponder is turned off.
5.6.3 Altitude Input Selection Priority
Care must be taken to understand the priority for selecting the pressure altitude inputs. The GTX 3x5
searches the altitude inputs in a defined sequence and stops when it finds a valid pressure altitude input.

See section ___.
5.9 Suppression Bus
The external SUPPRESSION BUS is intended for connection to other L-band equipment, such as a DME
or UAT. The SUPRRESION BUS output is active whenever the GTX 3x5 transmits. When driven by
another source, the GTX 3x5 transponder receiver and transmitter functions will be suppressed.
The SUPPRESSION BUS is driven to ≥ 18Vdc when the GTX 3x5 transmits. An input voltage of ≥ 10Vdc
will suppress the GTX 3x5.
5.10 OAT Temperature Input
The GTX 3x5 includes an Outside Air Temperature (OAT) input, used for OAT and density altitude
displays.
The OAT input uses a current sensor type probe, such as the EDMO P/N 655-PROBE or the Davtron P/N
C307PS. The temperature input specification is 1microamp per degree Kelvin (1uA/°K). Connect the
probe red wire to pin 25 and the black wire to pin 3.
The audio output is used to provide aural traffic alerts. The output is capable of 100mW into a 500Ω load.
5.12 1PPS Interface
The 1PPS Interface can be configured as either an input or output, depending on the GTX 3x5
configuration and the aircraft installation.
With either a GTX 335 or GTX 345 with internal GPS, the 1PPS can be used as an output to provide 1PPS
to other equipment in the aircraft.
With a GTX 345 without internal GPS, the 1PPS can be configured as an input to provide timing
information for the ADS-B UAT receiver functions.
5.13 Configuration Module
The configuration module interface is used for connection to either a configuration module or an optional
pressure sensor module.
The configuration and pressure sensor module kits include a wire harness for connection to the GTX 3x5
D-sub connector. Connect using the wire colors as listed in the table.
The configuration module is used to store the specific aircraft installation configuration settings.
The pressure sensor module can be used to provide the pressure altitude for the transponder. The pressure
sensor module also includes configuration memory function for storing the installation configuration, so
when used, the separate configuration module is not needed.
The USB cable shipped with the unit should be used and should not be lengthened. The USB cable should
also not be tied up in bundles with other electrical cables, particularly power cables, in the aircraft to avoid
potential damage or interference due to coupling with other cables.
