1.4 ADS-B Capabilities
ADS-B technology is used to improve situational awareness and flight safety. With ADS-B capabilities,
position, velocity, and heading information are automatically transmitted to other aircraft and ground
stations. ADS-B provides automatic transmission of aircraft information without a request.
1.4.1 ADS-B Out
When properly installed with a GPS position source, meeting the guidance of AC 20-165 the GTX 335 and
GTX 345 include ADS-B Out capabilities. See section __ for additional information. The GTX 335 and
GTX 345 will broadcast the position, velocity, and heading information using the mode S transponder
transmitter.
1.4.2 ADS-B In
The GTX 345 includes 978 MHz UAT and 1090 MHz receivers for ADS-B In capabilities. The GTX 345
can receive airborne position from other aircraft with either the UAT or 1090 MHz receivers. The
GTX 345 can receive FIS-B information from ground stations.
1.4.3 Installation Approval for ADS-B Systems
Need information
1.5 TIS System Capabilities
The GTX 3x5 provides uplink information of nearby traffic from the TIS. TIS is a ground-based service
providing relative location of all transponder equipped aircraft within a specified service area. The TIS
ground sensor uses real time track reports to generate traffic notifications. TIS provides a graphical display
of traffic advisory information in the cockpit for non-TCAS equipped aircraft.
Advisory traffic information is available to aircraft equipped with a Mode S data link such as the Garmin
GTX 335 or GTX 345. Advisory traffic information may be displayed on a Garmin 400W/500W Series
unit.
The GTX 3x5 unit can be incorporated into installations with other compatible control/display units such
as the Garmin GNS 480 (CNX80), GTN 6XX/7XX, GMX 200, and MX20 MFD.
Surveillance data is provided for transponder equipped aircraft within the coverage volume. Aircraft
without an operating transponder are invisible to TIS. TIS displays traffic within seven nautical miles from
3000 feet below to 3500 feet above the requesting aircraft. The pilot sees the location, relative direction
and altitude of other aircraft.

3.8 Antenna Considerations
Mounting location considerations for the antenna(s) is provided in this section. The recommended antenna
placements are illustrated in figure 3-1.
3.8.1 Transponder Antenna

NOTE
For installations on composite aircraft, ground planes must be considered. Conductive
wire mesh, radials, or thin aluminum sheets embedded in the composite material provide
the ground plane allowing the antenna pattern (gain) to be maximized for improved
transponder performance.

NOTE
Note that penetration of the pressure vessel on pressurized aircraft requires additional
data not included in this manual.
The following guidance provides information to aid the installer in ensuring the most optimum location is
selected for the transponder antenna.
The antenna mounting should utilize the aircraft manufacturers type certificated antenna location and style.
The antenna should be installed in accordance with manufacturer instructions and/or AC 43.12-2A
Chapter 3.
Transponder antenna considerations include the following.
• Be mounted away from major protrusions, such as engines, nacelles, propellers, and antenna masts
• Be as far as practical from landing gear doors, access doors, or other openings that could affect its
radiation pattern
• Must be mounted vertically on the bottom of the aircraft
• Must not be mounted within three feet of the ADF sense antenna or any other communication
antenna
• Must not be mounted within six feet of a DME antenna
• To prevent RF interference, the antenna must be mounted a minimum of three feet from the
GTX 3x5
3.8.2 GPS Antenna
The installation guidelines meet the intent of AC 20-138A Section 16. The greater the variance from these
guidelines, the greater the chance of decreased signal quality and availability. Meeting all of these
installation guidelines may not be possible on all aircraft. These guidelines are listed in order of
importance to achieve optimum performance. Items 3 to 5 below are of equal importance and their
significance may depend on the aircraft installation. The installer should use best judgment to balance the
installation guidelines.
1. The GPS antenna should be mounted as close to level as possible with respect to the normal cruise
flight attitude of the aircraft. If the normal flight attitude is not known, substitute with the
waterline, which is typically referenced as level while performing a weight and balance check. A
shim may be used to level the antenna.
2. The GPS antenna should be mounted in a location to minimize the effects of airframe shadowing
during typical maneuvers. Typically mounting farther away from the tail section reduces signal
blockage seen by the GPS antenna.

190-01499-02 GTX 3x5 TSO Installation Manual

Rev. 1 Page 3-7
3. The GPS antenna should be mounted no closer than two feet from any VHF COM antenna or any
other antenna which may emit harmonic interference at the L1 frequency of 1575.42 MHz. An
aircraft EMC check (see section ??) can verify the degradation of GPS in the presence of
interference signals. If an EMC check reveals unacceptable interference, either insert a GPS notch
filter in line with the offending VHF COM or the (re-radiating) ELT transmitter, or select a
different GPS antenna location.

NOTE
When mounting a combination antenna, the recommended distance of two feet or more is
not applicable to the distance between the antenna elements of the combination antenna
(ex. GPS and COM, GPS and XM) provided the combination antenna is TSO authorized
and has been tested to meet Garmin’s minimum performance standards. See table 1-10 for
approved antennas.
4. The GPS antenna should be mounted no closer than two feet from any antennas emitting more than
25 watts. An aircraft EMC check can verify the degradation of GPS in the presence of potential
interference signals.
5. To minimize the effects of shadowing at 5° elevation angles, the GPS antenna must be mounted no
closer than nine inches (center to center) from other antennas, including passive antennas such as
another GPS or XM antenna.
6. To maintain a constant gain pattern and limit degradation by the windscreen avoid mounting the
antenna closer than three inches from the windscreen.
7. To achieve the best possible low-elevation antenna gain by minimizing pattern degradation due to
shadowing and near-field interaction a twelve inch center to center spacing between GPS antennas
is required. When practical, twelve inch center-to-center spacing must be used. If twelve inch
spacing is not practical, the maximum center-to-center spacing must be used, but never less than
nine inches. Spacing less than nine inches results in unacceptable antenna pattern degradation.

Rev. 1 Page 3-9
3.10 Cabling and Wiring
Wiring should be installed in accordance with AC 43.13-1B Chapter 11, Sections 8 through 13. The
following issues should be addressed:
• It should not be possible for the cable harness to be exposed to wire chafing.
• The cable harness should not be located near flight control cables, high capacity electrical lines
(e.g., DC electric motor cables), or fuel lines.
• Do not route cable near high energy sources (e.g., DC motors, high heat sources).
• Wiring which is required to be shielded per the interconnect diagrams in Appendix D must be
shielded.
• Shield pigtail lengths must be less than 3.0 inches.
3.11 Shielding and Electrical Bonding Considerations
Electrical equipment, supporting brackets, and racks should be electrically bonded to the aircraft’s main
structure. Refer to SAE ARP 1870 Section 5 when surface preparation is required to achieve an electrical
bond. The electrical bond should achieve a DC resistance less than or equal to 2.5 milliohms to local
structure where the equipment is mounted. Compliance should be verified by inspection using a calibrated
milliohm meter.
3.12 Cooling Requirements and Considerations
The GTX 3x5 has no cooling requirements or considerations.
The GTX 335 and GTX 345 include a cooling fan. The fan is mounted on the rear of the unit with a
cooling port on the left side of the unit. Ensure there are no obstructions to the air inlet or exhaust. The
should be at least ?? inches of clearance for both inlet and exhaust ports.

heads or other obstructions prevent the unit from fully engaging in the rack, see
section 6.3. Exercise caution when installing the rack in the instrument panel.
Deformation of the rack may make it difficult to install and remove the GTX 3x5.

2. Install the rack in the aircraft panel using six #6-32 flat head screws and self locking nuts. The
screws are inserted from the inside through holes in the sides of the rack.
3. To attach the backplate to the rack, align the backplate so that the backplate screw heads pass
through the keyed holes in the back of the rack.
4. Slide the backplate to the left (viewing from the front of the unit) until it clicks into place. Secure
the backplate by tightening the four #4-40 screws.
4.5.2 Unit Insertion and Removal

NOTE
Prior to placing the unit in the rack, in order to ensure correct position of the retention
mechanism, it may be necessary to insert the hex drive tool into the access hole and turn
the drive tool counterclockwise until it completely stops.

CAUTION
The application of hex drive tool torque exceeding 15 in-lbs can damage the locking
mechanism.

Insertion
1. The GTX 3x5 unit is installed in the rack by sliding it straight in until it stops, approximately
3/8 inch short of the final position.

5.6 Altitude Inputs
The GTX 3x5 can use pressure altitude inputs from several different sources, using the gray code inputs,
an RS-232 serial input, an ARINC 429 input, or the optional pressure sensor module (Garmin P/N 011-
03080-00). If multiple altitude sources are connected, the GTX 3x5 will prioritize them as follows:
1. Optional pressure sensor module
2. ARINC 429 input
3. RS-232 input
4. Parallel Gray code input
Among the surveillance items that the Mode S transponder (GTX 335 and GTX 345) will transmit to the
ground stations and other aircraft are altitude reporting in 25 foot resolution with the proper encoder. In
order to report altitude in 25 foot resolution, the GTX 3x5 must receive altitude from a suitable altitude
reporting device through the serial inputs or from the optional pressure sensor module. A parallel Gray
code encoder provides altitude in 100 foot resolution.
For altimeters that can be connected with both a serial interface and the parallel Gray code input, such as
the Garmin GAE 43 (P/N 013-00066-00), connect one or the other interfaces, but not both.
5.6.1 Pressure Sensor Module
The optional pressure sensor module (Garmin P/N 011-03080-00) can be used for the GTX 3x5 pressure
altitude input.
The pressure sensor module uses the same interface as the configuration module and also includes the
configuration module functionality. See section ??.

6 POST INSTALLATION CONFIGURATION AND CHECKOUT
6.1 System Configuration Overview
Checkout and configuration instruction for the GTX 3x5 is provided in this section.
• Perform the installation checks
• Configure the GTX 3x5 for the specific installation
• Perform ground checks to verify interfaces to external equipment
• Perform the specified flight checks
6.2 Mounting, Wiring, and Power Checks
Verify that all cables are properly secured and shields are connected to the shield block of the connectors.
Check the movement of the flight and engine controls to verify there is no interference between cabling
and control systems. Ensure that all wiring is installed as described in section _____.
Prior to installing and powering up the GTX 3x5, the wiring harness must be checked for proper
connections to the aircraft systems and other avionics equipment. Point to point continuity must be
checked to expose any faults such as shorting to ground or wiring discrepancies. All faults or
discrepancies must be corrected before proceeding.
After installing the GTX 3x5 or completing a continuity check, perform power and ground checks to verify
proper power distribution to the GTX 3x5. All faults are discrepancies should be corrected at this time.
The GTX 3x5 can be installed after completion of the continuity and power checks. The GTX 3x5 should
be installed in the rack and secured appropriately. See Appendix A for applicable drawings.
6.3 Connector Engagement Check
Check the connector engagement prior to configuration and checkout of the GTX 3x5.
1. Turn on the avionics master switch (if installed).
2. Place the GTX 3x5 in the rack and engage the cam mechanism.
3. Turn the Allen screw of the locking cam (located on the lower left side of the unit) slowly
clockwise until the unit just powers on. A T-handle can be used for this, but ensure that the screw
is not over-tightened.
4. Count the number of complete revolutions the Allen screw can be turned until it cannot turn any
more.
Do not over-tighten. Three turns is the minimum for proper installation. If fewer than three turns are
possible, the mounting rack should be moved aft (toward the pilot) such that the aircraft panel does not
obstruct the unit from properly engaging in the rack.
6.4 Configuration Setup
The GTX 3x5 configuration menu is used configure the settings and interfaces, such as serial port
connections, for each specific installation. The configuration settings are stored in internal memory as well
as the external configuration module if connected. The optional pressure sensor also serves as a
