SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES TO MEET GOALS:

The students will be able to understand how John Locke and Thomas Paine influenced the
current culture of the United States.
The students will realize how events in the past are important to understand because they can
directly influence how we live today.

OHIO LEARNING STANDARD Grade 10 (Government 1)

The students will realize how the thoughts and beliefs of individuals, such as John Locke and
Thomas Paine, can influence the actions of an entire nation moving forward.

MOTIVATIONAL TECHNIQUES:

I will start my lesson with “On this Day.” Everyday Mr. Abram presents the class with three
events that happened on that particular day in history. I think this is a good way to get the
students immediately engaged in learning.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Projector, flash drive, PowerPoint, pens/pencils, paper.

PROCEDURE FOR THE LESSON:

 Students enter classroom, and I will present “On this Day”. I will hand out questions to
the class to guide note taking. (5 minutes)
 I will introduce who John Locke was and a little about his background (3-5 minutes)
 I will explain the philosophy of John Locke and how that relates to what we believe in
the United States (8 minutes)
 I will show the students direct quotes from John Locke that are used in the Declaration of
Independence. I will ask the students to engage with the quotes. (asking them what the
quotes mean and how they relate to our government today) (10 minutes)
 Short video with relevant information about John Locke (3 and a half minutes)
 Then, I will switch gears to Thomas Paine. There will be a short introduction about his
personal life (3 minutes)
 I will explain what Thomas Paine believed and how it relates to the current Unites States
(3 minutes)
 Then, I will present the students with direct quotes from Thomas Paine, and I will ask the
students to give their thoughts on the meaning of the quotes (6 minutes)
 I will conclude the lesson with a short video about Thomas Paine (5 minutes)
 Finally, I will collect the questions I passed out at the beginning of class.

ACADEMIC LANGUAGE:

John Locke, Thomas Paine, Declaration of Independence, Enlightenment, Common Sense,

Second Treatise of Government.

ASSESSMENT METHODS:

I will review the questions I gave the students to see if they were following along/if I was
presenting the information in a way that was easy to understand.

EVALUATION OF FIELD EXPERIENCE STUDENT’S PERFORMANCE:

I felt that overall my objectives were met in the lesson. I covered all of the information that I
wanted to about John Locke, Thomas Paine, and the development of the United States. I feel that
the students understood how important these men were to our country. However, I felt that as a
result of my nervousness I spoke a little too fast and monotoned. My public speaking is
something I need to work on for the future. The students in my class commented that I need to be
a little more energetic with my delivery, wait longer before I change slides on my Power-point,
and ask questions more often throughout the lesson. These are weaknesses that I will work on
and try to improve upon for my next lesson.
