Installation:

IrriGRAY Graywater Pumping Basin 18” x 30”

Please read this entire document before commencing installation

The IrriGRAY pumping system design is based on three simple design

concepts:

 The system is built onsite, to best suit the existing plumbing conditions

 The graywater inlet and overflow can be located anywhere on the

basin, as long as the bottom of the overflow pipe is located at least 12”
above the interior floor of the basin

 The IrriGRAY pump sits loosely on the bottom of the basin, and is held
in place by the vertical pump outlet riser, which is attached to the side
of either the basin, or basin collar extenders, depending on the height
of the overall basin assembly.

The filter should be located in the most practical location for easy
maintenance access. It can be placed anywhere between the pumping basin
and the first irrigation location.

Step 1: Measure Stub Out Depth

Measure the depth of the inlet and overflow DWV pipes adjacent to the
natural ground surface.

 If the depth is less than 18”, A single 18” x 30” basin is used, without
requiring extension collars.

 If the depth is between 18” and 30” a basin and one extension collar is used.

 If the depth is between 30” and 42”, a basin and two extension collars are used.

The maximum number of extension collars permissible is two. Deeper installations will require a pit to effectively
lower the natural ground level adjacent to the pumping basin.

Step 2: Excavate

Excavate the basin location to a depth of the length of the basin (and extension collars if used), plus 2”.

Step 3: Backfill Base

Place a 2” layer of suitable fill, e.g. pea gravel, to form a supporting base.

Step 4: Mark Inlet and Overflow centerlines

Ensure the overflow centerline is at least 1/4” below the inlet centerline.

Step 5: Drill Holes for Inlet, Overflow & Vent (if required)

Carefully check the 2” seal (or 3” seal if applicable) for the correct hole saw size. Seal hole saw sizes vary
according to the seal manufacturer. Drill each hole and insert the rubber seals into the holes.

Step 6: Emergency Drain (if required)

Measure the correct height of the centerline of the emergency drain, keeping in mind
the bottom of the seal must clear the internal floor of the basin. Drill the hole and fit
the seal.

Insert a short length of DWV (ABS or PVC) pipe into the seal:
 Prepare the pipe by chamfering the edge
 Lubricate the seal using plumber’s lubricant or liquid detergent
 Insert the pipe by applying inwards pressure while rocking the pipe up / down
and left to right
 Note: if the pipe is very difficult to insert, notching the end of the pipe will
allow the pipe to compress and insert more easily.

Glue the required valve or end cap to the drain pipe. If the drain is connected to a
septic or sewer drain, we recommend fitting an appropriate gate valve on the inside
of the basin. In most cases the end of the pipe
will only require chamfering.
Step 7: Fit Inlet and Overflow Pipes
If the pipe is particularly difficult
to insert (more than 60lbs of
Chamfer the end of the inlet and overflow pipes and insert into the seal as per
pressure) notching the end of the
instructions for the emergency drain. pipe will allow it to compress,
reducing the force required.
Step 8: Trial fit

Before assembling basin extenders to the basin, trial fit to existing plumbing.
Determine the best location for the pump so the float switch can move freely, and is
not directly affected by graywater falling from the inlet pipe (the waterfall effect of
the inlet can delay pumping operation if water is falling directly on the float switch).

Step 9: Assemble Extension Collars (if required)

For each extension collar join, apply a layer of self adhesive rubber strip (supplied) around the lip. This rubber
seal is not designed to be water tight, as the inlet and overflow pipes will be below any extenders. Screw the
extender/s to the assembly, but do not over tighten, or the retaining clip thread will strip.

Step 10: Glue plumbing

Pre-apply all pipe joints with solvent primer and solvent. Position the basin in the correct location and allow joints
to set. We recommend avoiding fast acting solvents, allowing more time to position the basin correctly.

Step 11: Prepare Pump

The float switch cable has already been clipped to the pump in the optimal
position.

The lower outlet assembly (above the pump outlet 90 bend) circulates water
inside the basin whenever the pump is activated. This prevents graywater sludge
accumulation and build up inside the basin.

Using one of the supplied plastic cable ties, attach one end of the plastic chain to
the pump handle. The chain is included to allow the pump to be lifted / lowered
without straining either the pump riser or power cord.

Step 12: Pump outlet riser

Various lengths of 3/4” black risers, all thread 3/4” tube and female / female connectors have been supplied to
enable the correct height riser to be constructed to suit the use of 0, 1 or 2 extension collars. The all thread tube
may need to be cut to size to achieve the desired height.

Ideally the 3/4” pipe will exit the side of the basin (or extender) approximately 3” below natural ground level.

The top of the riser is completed with a female / male 90 bend. The female thread attaches to the top of the
vertical riser, while the male thread will pass through the wall of the basin (or extension collar if applicable).

Mark the centerline of the outlet, and drill a 3/4” hole.

Push the thread through the hole, apply Teflon tape to the thread, and screw a 3/4” female x 3/4” insert 90 bend
onto the exposed thread.

Step 13: Fix upper length of chain to the top of the basin / extension collar

Drill two 1/8” holes approximately 1” apart near the top of the extension collar. Allowing some slack in the chain,
pass the cable tie through one hole, a chain link and back through the other hole. Tighten the cable tie.

Step 14: Connect Pump outlet to Filter/s

Using 3/4” LDPE tube, connect the basin pumping outlet to the filter (located in the most practical location for
cleaning / maintenance). The filter is one directional—ensure this tube is connected to the side marked “IN”.

3/4” barbed inserts x 3/4” male thread adaptors are included for this connection. Teflon tape is required for these
threaded fittings.

Important: at some point along the 3/4” LDPE tube, between the
basin pump outlet and the filter/s, a 3/4” swing check valve must
be fitted. This swing check valve prevents backflow caused by lack
of pressure when the pump switches off. Backflow can cause air to
be sucked down the line into the pump vortex chamber, resulting
in an air bubble forming, potentially damaging the pump by dry
running. 2 x 3/4” male thread x 3/4” barbed insert adaptors are
included for fitting the swing check valve.

The swing check valve is one directional. Ensure the arrow on the
side of the valve is pointing toward the filter (i.e. away from the
pump). Do NOT use a spring check valve instead of a swing check
valve. Doing so will void the pump warranty.

Multiple filters may be used to increase the time required between filter cleaning. If multiple filters are being
installed, connect the filters in parallel (sharing the filtration load), NOT in series.

Step 15: Fit Power lead Grommet

The power lead grommet is a solid grommet with a slit on one side leading to a preformed power lead hole. Using
the correct hole saw, drill a hole through the side of the basin (or extension collar). Pass the pump power lead
through the hole and then fit the grommet to the hole. This seal is weather proof only. Ensure this grommet is
installed above the overflow level.

Step 16: Test

Where possible, remove all plastic remnants from the system. Small filings will not damage the pump, however
plastic pieces approximately 1/2” wide can cause a blockage in the pump outlet rise.

Before connecting the filters to the irrigation system, test the pump operation by either allowing graywater to
enter and activate the pump, or use a potable water supply to test.

Diversion Valves

Due to the wide range of code variations from state to state, and even county to county, diversion valves are not
included in IrriGRAY pumping stations.

To the best of our knowledge, listed / certified 3 way 3” valves are not available in the U.S. 2” 3 way Jandy or
Pentair swimming pool valves are commonly used for 2” plumbing, however some jurisdictions do not permit the
use of these are they are not listed for DWV use.

An Alternative is the use of a single 2” or 3” gate valve either inside the graywater basin, or immediately before
entry into the basin. The best location is determined by ease of access to the valve. Generally shallow stubouts
allow the installation of a gate or ball valve in a valve box outside the graywater basin, while deep stubouts are
best serviced by a gate valve inside the graywater basin.

Shallow Stub Out

Basin Fit a 2” or 3” ball valve immediately prior to entry into the graywater basin. A 90 or 45
Inlet Wye / junction is then fitted before the valve, with the branch of the Wye elevated by a
couple of degrees, before the branch re-joins the overflow line (typically with an
additional Wye).

If the branch is elevated slightly, graywater will flow allow the easiest path (it the valve
Valve is open) and into the graywater basin. If the valve is closed, the graywater can only
Overflow proceed to the overflow outlet.

Deep Stub Out

Basin
Fit a 2” or 3” gate valve to the inlet pipe inside the basin. Gate valves are much
Valve shorter than ball valves, and allow more room for installation of the pump and other
Inlet
fittings such as a makeup water supply / float valve.

As with the shallow stub out, a wye is fitted before the

valve (although in this case a little further away). Again
the branch of the wye should be elevated slightly,
Overflow ensuring the easiest path for the graywater is to enter
the basin (if the valve is open. If the valve is closed the
graywater can only proceed to the overflow outlet.
