Advanced Perimeter
We have learned to use the measurements of each side to calculate the perimeter
of a polygon. Did you know that we can use the perimeter to calculate the length
of the sides as well? Let’s try to do it together!

(50-10-10)÷2 = 30÷2 = 15 in
2. The perimeter of a triangle is 16 cm. One side is 6 cm long, the other one is 4 cm.
What is the length of the third side?

1. Ms. Miller wants the kitchen and dining room to be tiled. The kitchen
is 16 feet by 10 feet and the dining room is 12 feet by 10 feet. Each
tile is 1 foot square. How many tiles would they need to buy?
2. They are also looking at some carpet for their 16 feet by 20 feet big
living room. How much carpet would they need at least?
3. Mr. Miller is trying to decide which table to get for their dining room.
Table A is 42 in by 70 in, and Table B is 44 in by 64 in. He wants the
bigger table, which table should he get?
4. Cathy wants to paint her room purple. There are four walls in her room
and each of them are 14 feet by 8 feet. One of the walls has a 4 feet
by 2 feet window on it. If a can of paint will cover 80 square feet, how
many cans of paints at least will they need to paint her room?
1. Ms. Miller wants the kitchen and dining room to be tiled. The kitchen
is 16 feet by 10 feet and the dining room is 12 feet by 10 feet. Each
tile is 1 square foot. How many tiles would they need to buy?
(16x10) + (12x10) = 160+120 = 280 tiles
2. They are also looking at some carpet for their 16 feet by 20 feet big
living room. How much carpet would they need at least?
16x20 = 320 square feet of carpet (/feet2 of carpet)
3. Mr. Miller is trying to decide which table to get for their dining room.
Table A is 42 in by 70 in, and Table B is 44 in by 64 in. He wants the
bigger table, which table should he get?
42x70 = 2940 in2
44x64 = 2816 in2
Therefore, Table A is bigger, and Mr. Miller should get Table A.
4. Cathy wants to paint her room purple. There are four walls in her room
and each of them are 14 feet by 8 feet. One of the walls has a 4 feet
by 2 feet window on it. If a can of paint will cover 80 square feet, how
many cans of paints at least will they need to paint her room?
(14x8)x4-(4x2)÷80 = 5.5
Therefore, they will need at least 6 cans of paint.
1. First of all, he needs to replace the fencing that goes around his barn.
The area that needs fencing is a 100 feet by 50 feet rectangle, how
many feet of fencing will he need?
2. Now he is in the woodshop making a picnic table for his kids. He has 6
long pieces of wood, and they are all 60 inches long and 4 inches wide.
He is putting the 6 pieces together side by side to make the table top.
What would be the perimeter of the table?
3. Mr. McDonald’s farm is 660 feet long. If the area of his farm is 43560
square feet, how many feet wide is his farm? What is the perimeter
of his farm then?
1. First of all, he needs to replace the fencing that goes around his barn.
The area that needs fencing is a 100 feet by 50 feet rectangle, how
many feet of fencing will he need?
100+100+50+50 = 300 feet
2. Now he is in the woodshop making a picnic table for his kids. He has 6
long pieces of wood, and they are all 60 inches long and 4 inches wide.
He is putting the 6 pieces together side by side to make the table top.
What would be the perimeter of the table?
60+60+(4x6x2) = 168 inches
3. Mr. McDonald’s farm is 660 feet long. If the area of his farm is 43560
square feet, how many feet wide is his farm? What is the perimeter
of his farm then?
43560÷660 = 66 feet
The perimeter: 660+660+66+66 = 1452 feet
What is Perimeter?
Perimeter is the distance around a 2-dimensional shape. If you know the length of the
sides, you can add them all up, and calculate the perimeter.

Perimeter Fun
Pick out three objects that have straight sides around you. Use a ruler to measure each
side of the objects, then calculate the perimeters. Write down your findings below.
