Proposed Title:
A PROPOSED WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT IN SAN ANTONIO, NORTHERN SAMAR

1) PROJECT JUSTIFICATION
A. Waterfront - The land alongside a body of water, be it an ocean, lake, river or stream. Should not be
simply considered as a line, but a network of places, functions, additions and hinges between the
coast of cities, between the port and urban activities. Any building on the waterfront should boost
activity in the public spaces around it

TYPES OF WATERFRONT:
 Cultural Waterfront - sense of community, festivity, artistic expression, recreation, commercial bustle.
 Environmental Waterfront - "Design with nature", might include shore stabilization, wetland
preservation, prairie restoration etc.
 Historic Waterfront - "A sense of uniqueness and character" to a place. Provide a special educational
experience by preserving the cultural heritage of place.
 Mixed-use Waterfront - dynamic space containing various activities blended to complement each
other.
 Recreational Waterfront - "The place of community gathering". Parks, gardens, picnic areas, walking,
cycling and water related activities including boating, fishing, etc.
 Residential Waterfront - Housings, creates opportunities for other activities like retail, recreation,
restaurants.
 Working Waterfront - river-related activity such as fishing, boat repair, etc.

B. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

After the tragedy of Yolanda year 2013, the Northern part of the Samar are being washout by the
flash flood and storm surge where the area is open from the pacific ocean. The area is prone of
Typhoons and storm surge, etc.

This design research aims to develop a city’s urban edge and join the rest of the world in
integrating its waterfront to environmental systems and to existing urban development and new local
tourist destinations through urban intervention by establishing the fusion of landscape architecture,
culture, environmental preservation and technology.

Key Questions:

1. How would the Architecture find a solution to the possible environment issues and provide a disaster
proof environment?
2. What kind of waterfront could fit in the area of San Antonio, Northern Samar?
3. How can a proposed waterfront development influence and attract to the tourist and people who
live in the area?
C. RESEARCH GOALS

OBJECTIVES:
 To create an Urban Environment that would serve as a Landmark and would reflect the
major product of the site through its character
 To create the best service to the public through well organize planning of spaces
 To minimize of experiencing natural calamities of the site due of macro and micro climate
 To let people appreciate nature as they stay in the place
ASSUMPTION:
 To host a commercial activities in San Antonio, Northern Samar
 To provide a source of revenue for government, shops, restaurants, sport activities,
transportation, boating etc.
 To develop a Tourism by offering a variety of attractions like water sports, entertainment
arenas, park, shopping areas, etc.
 To provide a Habitat Protection and Restoration
 To provide Flood control measures
 To provide General Public with an Open Space for leisure and recreation
 To creates a Healthy and Active Urban Environment

D. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY


Needs:
1. Social – Unemployed people live in Northern Samar will get the opportunities to get a job and
businesses and more tourist will visit because of the hidden paradise of San Antonio
2. Environmental – Tourist need a better place to live in where the architecture connects to the
environment
3. Cultural – Promotes the Tradition of Manoglaya Festival in San Antonio Northern Samar

Significance:
1. Social – Unemployed people in Northern Samar will get the opportunities to get a job and
businesses and more tourist will visit because of the beauty of San Antonio.
2. Environmental – Biophilic architecture will minimize the natural calamities in the site
3. Economic – number of Tourist will increase every year. Tourism contribute towards complete
growth and development of a Country

F. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
San Antonio, Northern Samar are considered an undisturbed paradise and future premier tourist
destination in Eastern Visayas Region and centered of Manoglaya Festival. San Antonio has many feature does
not discover yet, it has a white and pink sand in the island. Proposing a Waterfront Development in San
Antonio, Northern Samar is to exposed the aesthetics and beauty of island to the tourist and make the island
known in world. This design research aims to develop a city’s urban edge and join the rest of the world in
integrating its waterfront to environmental systems and to existing urban development and new local tourist
destinations through urban intervention by establishing the fusion of landscape architecture, culture,
environmental preservation and technology. The waterfront design seeks to increase ideas in waterfront
development by revitalizing an urban edge community, preserving its ecology and maintaining its sense of
place. The development of a waterfront to an integrated park system also ensures that the city has a resilient
and sustainable urban edge through environmental sensibility.

G. PRELIMINARY CONCEPT

To propose a biophilic Urban Environment “Waterfront Development” that could help improve the
gray environment due of Typhoon Yolanda and to become way more connected to nature.
