Hello and welcome to “the Gadget Gig”, your favourite show for all things gadgety. I’m Arshaq your
host and today we’re talking the Indian market of mobile phones. This has become a hot topic since
the set-up of india’s very first Apple production plant on the outskirts of Chennai
We have with us the gadget gurus from the “tech specs”, Arjun and Harshal with and we will discuss
in detail what will be outcomes from this plant other than iphones.
My question to both of you is, no excise for apple now. Do you think it will now capture the market?
Guest 1 (Arjun)
No excise duty is going to be a great aid for the price is what I believe. The company’s statements
suggest that the prices will go down by 25%. But a matter of speculation is that even the remaining
65% of say the basic 80K iphoneX will become around 60k, and for the Indian market, that still is very
much the higher end. It’s early, but also no as an answer to your question.

I second Arjun. The Indian consumers want bang for the buck. Apple might bring the prices down but
we remain the world’s most value conscious market. If you are getting the best android for or under
30 thousand, why, like he said spend 60 thousand. An extra 30k still hurts the average Indian. I think
and I believe other than if you fancy an iphone, you would just go buy the best available android.

So Arjun what kept apple sidelined and what are the our most trusted brands. Tell us the cellphone
market scenario.
Guest 1 (Arjun)
Apple was just lurking around ofcourse because it doesn’t bring along value for money. The situation
in the market is that we trust the android, not a specific brand. There’s a big chunk of consumers
that xiaomi takes away, but then there is one plus, Lenovo, Motorola etc., that are the most trusted.
There’s no one brand, but the Android OS that dominates still.
Guest 2 (Harshal)
A hike, however small, in the number of consumers is the only thing that a local assembly line
guarantees. Those whose budget was earlier half the price of apple phones, will certainly considering
‘investing’ a tad extra. But again, there’s also going to be division which does not think that that
extra is just a “tad” and worth it. So yes a hike, but the scale, not pretty sure if very large.
Consumption of android might be hampered, will remain in dominance.

So the gurus say there’s going to be no drastic effect on the buyers of android, for us who derive
value out of our pennies. Androids will still have their grip on the market. And with that we wrap us
today’s discussion. Thank you for joining us on today’s show. We’ll see you again next week in
another weekly hot topic discussion on “Gadget Gig”. Till then bye bye.
