IMs and Pilot Tests
 EDB in-situ biodegradation pilot test
 The four-phase pilot was designed to evaluate the use of in situ
biostimulation to enhance anaerobic EDB biodegradation (i.e.: will adding
food get the naturally occurring bacteria to eat EDB?)
 The pilot showed promising results; greater than 99.9% reduction in EDB
concentrations, well below the 0.05 ug/l cleanup level
 An interim report will be submitted to NMED by May 1, 2019
 Bioventing Pilot Test
 This pilot picks up where the SVE IM left off
 This pilot will deliver oxygen and moisture to soil bacteria desiccated by 12
years of SVE
 This pilot test will run from APR through OCT 2019
 The summary report is due to NMED on 31 JAN 2020

 Kirtland AFB’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Permit
requires two annual public meetings for all Base cleanup projects. The BFF
team:
 Holds three annual public meetings
 Monthly stakeholder meetings
 Annual International District Fair
 Speaking to classes at UNM and CNM
 Science on Tap
 Field trips, open houses and technical “deep dives”
 Over 80 tours of the groundwater treatment plant
 Updates for neighborhood associations and other community groups
 Briefings for state, local and federal elected officials

 Way Ahead

 2019
 NPDES permit will be issued by EPA, anticipated for 2019
 Bioventing pilot test will be implemented
 Shallow soil vapor data will be collected and evaluated
 2020
 Second injection well will be completed under DP-1839
 Site investigation phase will be completed when coring report is approved by
NMED and the Phase II RFI Report and updated risk assessment will be
submitted
 2021 (*estimated)
 NMED will approve the Phase II RFI Report and updated risk assessment
(note: NMED has 360 days to review an RFI report)
 CME will begin upon NMED’s approval of Phase II RFI Report and updated
risk assessment
