ABSTRACT
This study aims to determine the feasibility of fiber dimensions in palm fronds as
a raw material for pulping. This research was conducted from September to
October 2018. Sampling was carried out in the area of Anggoro Village Natural
Forest, Abuki District, Konawe Regency. Fiber observation was carried out at the
Forensic Laboratory, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Halu Oleo
Kendari University. The sample used in this study is palm fronds on 3 different
trees with variants of the base, middle and end. Value data from the dimensions of
palm fiber and fiber derived derivatives obtained are averaged and calculated fiber
deviation values in each sample, then compared with fiber quality standards for
pulp and paper raw materials prepared by the Department of Agriculture (1976).
The calculation results obtained are then tabulated.
The results showed that the dimensions of fibers in the midrib part were better in
using pulp processing with a fiber length value of 1643.18μm, 34.25μm fiber
diameter, 22.97μm lumen diameter and fiber wall thickness of 7.23μm compared
to the middle part midrib and midrib fronds. The average fiber length of palm leaf
midribs (Arenga pinnata) in the tree variation is the medium category
(1608.66µm), with the overall value of the fiber dimension derivatives belonging
to the class II category in the feasibility of pulp raw material.
