● Hello everyone. My name is Garett Claybrook and I am a senior at the Legal Studies

Academy at First Colonial. I plan on going to East Carolina University next fall and studying

Biology. I love the outdoors and hanging out with my friends. Today, I’m bringing you guys

a quick and hopefully fun lesson on lead poisoning, and then we will do some painting later

on

Slide 2:
● Unfortunately, this 2 million came at a cost. The unnamed boy was exposed to lead paint

in low-income housing in northeast Baltimore before he was even 2 years old

● He was setback mentally by just the paint in the walls in his own home. He had learning

disabilities in school and slower overall development into the man that he is today

● It is a truly sad occurrence, one that shouldn’t even be happening today, but cases have

been reduced dramatically in the last half-century

● Thankfully, the government has taken action against lead paints almost 50 years ago

Slide 3:

● Lead has a variety of negative effects on the human body including damage to the brain

and kidneys, deterioration of organs, and increased susceptibility to more dangerous

diseases such as heart disease and chronic pulmonary disease, some of the top killers

in the US

● It also stunts the mental and physical growth of small children, lead to possible

disabilities or IQ loss, leaving the children disadvantaged for the rest of their lives

Slide 4:

● Lead is commonly used in paints to achieve vibrant colors and improve the overall

durability, it can also be found in the bottom paint of large shipping vessels, used a

deterrent against marine growth

● The usage of lead can be traced back thousands of years, to the time of the Ancient

Romans, where lead pots were considered the only acceptable way to make wine, which

lead to the sterilization of some men

Slide 5:

● The lead poisoning in the environment is sourced from a variety of scopes, including

antifouling paint and lead shotgun shot

● Antifouling paint, which is the paint coating on the hulls of large shipping vessels, uses

lead as the main deterrent of marine growth such as algae and crustaceans

● Lead shotgun shot, which originates from shotgun shells used by waterfowl hunters,

deposits in the water when ejected from the weapon. It used to be a huge problem in

regards to water health until lead shot was outlawed from being near water, and steel

being used as a substitute, but still has a significant ecological footprint on water quality
