Tutoring Reflection

Kirsten Dent
Date of tutoring session: 4/5/2019 Student Age & Grade: 8th Grade, 13 years old
Answer all in complete, grammatically correct sentences.
1. What topic(s) did you cover in your tutoring session?
During our tutoring session today, I worked with the student on angles. The worksheet the
student had talked about angles in two different ways. The first section talks about finding
angles using parallel lines such as finding vertical angles and alternate interior angles. Then the
second section talks about finding the angles inside of triangles. I worked with the student to
make sure that they could understand their assignment.
2. Did you use any problem-solving strategies or tools from this class? If so, describe how
this went. If not, what techniques did you use to help your student?
The student that I worked with understood the topic for the most part but I clarified some
questions she had. I clarified those questions by showing her simpler examples that would help
her see how to solve her problems and clarify her concerns. Using the simpler problems really
helped her understand what she needed to do and it provided her an example when she was
stuck doing problems later on. Using the simpler problem method is a very nice way to show
the student what they need to do without giving them too much information.
3. Describe any challenges you faced in the session. (What was your student’s attitude about
math? Did you notice any knowledge gaps? Was the lesson/homework too easy or too hard
for the student’s skill level? etc.)
There were no challenges during this session. In the past, the student has struggled with not
understanding the topics and then wanting to check with the teacher instead of me for the
answers. This session, she was very trusting of me and we were able to work together just fine
to figure out how to work on her assignment.
4. Describe any triumphs you had in the session.
After showing the student the example problems, she was so excited that she could solve the
problems. Like I had said before, she understood the topic for the most part but had some
questions about them. Once I showed her some examples, she felt super confident with
finishing the assignments. I’m so proud to see the progress she has had over this semester. She
has become way more confident in herself and her math work. It is exciting to see how much
she has grown.
5. What are your take-a-ways from the session? (Did you learn anything about teaching from
it? What would you do differently or the same to help your students?)
Tutoring Reflection

When I was showing the student simpler examples for her assignment, I learned that it can be
hard to explain all the stuff you need to know about angles. I had to explain things a couple
different ways to make sure that she understood. For example, it was complicated for me to
explain alternate interior angles. If I were to teach this topic to students in the future, I would
make sure that I explain it very clearly and straightforward using many examples so that the
students don’t get confused.
6. Other thoughts? (How comfortable were you with the topics? Did you face challenges with
the student’s teacher’s instruction style/rules? Can you relate to your student’s
struggles/triumphs?)
Since we already covered angles in this class, I felt pretty comfortable teaching this topic to the
student. When I was in 8th grade I remember learning about this and it was definitely confusing
for me in the beginning. I remembered my struggle and so I tried to make sure I was patient for
the student. I could tell that because I was patient and understanding about her questions then
she responded better and we had a really great tutoring session.
