Service-learning activities can be very rewarding. You have the potential to gain real

work experience while strengthening your leadership skills and abilities to work well in teams.

Becoming aware of your strengths and weaknesses are also beneficial to you as you move

towards graduation and into your chosen career. Internships are a great way to gain insight to

your future profession as well as kick start your career.

An ideal learning service activity that I would like to be involved in an internship where I

can improve my management/leadership skills, sales and marketing training, in a career setting.

There aren’t many internships out there that will allow students to get real life experience while

learning. Most internships consist of students doing mundane tasks while occasionally

shadowing the executives. I would want an experience where I can learn and work at the same

time.

While searching for internships that fit this description, I found one that looked

promising for future students. Enterprise Rent-A-Car has a Management Trainee Internship.

This is a paid internship that begins three times per year, usually at the beginning of each

semester and operate in many cities all over the United States. The next group for the Metro

Atlanta area, will start in the Fall 2019 semester. According to the official description on their

website, this training internship is a high energy position. Interns can expect to learn the daily

operations of running a business while gaining marketable skills. Enterprise also ensures that

interns will not run errands or get stuck with boring assignments.

I am studying Integrative Studies with concentrations in leadership and marketing. The

management trainee internship would relate to the coursework because it will allow me to

apply the theories and principals, I learned in my business courses to real work experiences. I

am currently taking the Principals of Management class. During the summer, I will take

Principals of Marketing. The internship description state that interns will learn about

sales/marketing, customer service, business management and administrative skills daily. I

believe this internship is directly related to my chosen coursework. I would also be able to

integrate past work experience in customer service to aid me during this internship. My career

goals include me owning and operating a real estate brokerage firm. I believe learning how to

manage a business and gaining experience and knowledge about sales and marketing will give

me an advantage when I begin my career.

This opportunity would be great for college students studying business administration,

management or marketing. Student seeking a bachelor’s degree who has taken business

coursework or has a background in customer service and sales will also benefit from this

internship. Additionally, for accounting majors, Enterprise has an accounting internship.

With the intensity of this program, future students will become more aware of their

strengths and weaknesses when working with others. College interns will work at the same

pace and take on the same challenges as the first- and second-year full-time professionals. I

believe students will learn very quickly how to maximize their strengths and work on improving

their weaknesses in a team environment. With the support and guidance of Enterprise’s

employees, Interns can learn how to overcome any obstacle they may encounter. Interns are

also eligible to earn performance incentives and employee referral awards.

The management trainee internship at enterprise will allow future students to think

about their vocational choices. Any student seeking to pursue a career in management,

marketing, sales or customer service will get a real-life glimpse of what is required of them. I

believe students will have a full understanding of their career choices. Some students may

realize they made the right choice. While others may feel they need to reconsider their career

plans.

I am confident that this activity will help student to encourage other students to be

involved with service learning. Students will not only gain a lot of insight into their future

professions, but they will take away lessons that will help them in any organization they might

work for. Students can integrate leadership skills, work experience, as well as coursework into

this activity. Service learning will allow students to see how it will all fit together after college.

That will give them the ability to graduate with confidence.
