There are 2 fundamental principal of memory

1) imagination and
2) Association

As we know when we were kid, we were taught “A” for Apple

(with figure of apple). It is because our mind was aware of apple
(because we had seen it) but it was unaware of alphabet” A”.
Therefore by associating “A” with apple, we remembered alphabet
“A”.

Same logic hold good in remembering case laws and section

number as well.

To remember section number first of all we need to convert

that number into other substance or things we know.
For example: number 182 is meaningless for us, therefore it
needs to be converted into meaningful substance. There is a
“PHONETIC METHOD “which can fulfill this purpose. So we
need to understand basic principle of phonetic system

Principle of “PHONETIC METHOD”

There are 3 rules for conversion of number into words

Rule1) converting number into alphabet as below

Number Alphabet how to remember?

0 Z, S Zeros (first and last alphabet of “zeros”

1 t, d “t” and “d” both has 1 down stroke

2 n “n” has 2 down stroke

3 m “m” has 3 down strokes

4 R FouR (last alphabet of “four”)

5 L in Roman number 50 =L

6 J,G

7 K, Q there are two 7 in alphabet “K”( now if u remember

“k, then you can remember “Q” as King and Queen)

8 F, V

9 P, b 9 when turned upside down it looks like “p” and “b”

Rule2) we should ignore VOWELS( a,e,I,o,u) and “W,H,Y” . No number is assocated

with VOWELS and “WHY” (to remember this rule, remember acronyms”why
vowels are not used?)

Rule3) Double letter to be construed as single letter.

example

Convert number 51 into words using phonetic method.

Solution:
 the numbers are 5 and 1
 5=L and 1=t or d
 Then possible words are

 “ LOTA(we ignored vowel “o” and “a”

 “LUDO” (we ignored vowel “u” and “o”)

 “HOLIDAY, (we ignored “H”, Y, and vowel”a, I,o )

 Wa LLeT (w, a, e are ignored. One “L” is ignored since double letters
are treated as single letter;
A)HOW TO REMEMBER SECTION NUMBER?
After knowing basic principle of Phonetic system, we can remember section number
easily. There are 4 steps to remember section number
The steps are demonstrated with an example.

Example

Section 274 deals with “Disqualification” of Director

Now to remember this section. We follow following steps

Step1 convert 274 into words using Phonetic method . one of the possible word is
“NauKaRi

Step2 Find Key word in Content of section. In this case key word is”
Disqualification” or “Disqualify”
Step3 link step1 and step2 , with your own sentence. Try to make as funny
sentence as possible. The funnier the sentence is , more easy to remember
For example a sentence can be” agar yeh director disqualify ho gaya toh isse
kahi vi Naukari nahi milegi”

Step4) try to visualize situation strongly. Imagine that director is about to be

disqualified to act as such, and he is not getting Naukari (job) anywhere. Try to
create mental picture of director hunting for job after being disqualified.

How to remember in exam??

After following above 4 steps , remembering section number is so easy. Now if u
ever need to remember in which section does “disqualification of director “ falls,
then you will automatically remember those mental picture of director who is not
getting Naukari anywhere. As soon as u get those words” Naukari” it can be
converted into number as 274.

Some more example:

1)Section 262 deals with “filling of casual vacancies by Board”

Step1) convert 262 into words- possible word is “Nagin

Step 2) choose keyword from content of section.. the keyword is

“causal vacancies”

Step3) To remember this, the sentence can be created as

“ in case of casual vacancies , only “Nagin” can be appointed .
Step4) visualize the situation “ nagin is taking oath while being
appointed as director in case of casual vacancies”

Though you may find this technique bit nonsense. but remember only
nonsense , stupidity, oddity are easier to remember.

(B) How To remember CASE Laws

after knowing phonetic system and concept of association, remembering case laws is also
a simple task.

The steps involved are discussed below along with example.

Example)
In IDT we have case law “ Municipal Corporation Of Greater Mumbai”(1996)(s.c). it is
the landmark judgement dealing with Movability of article or substance. This is also
called as “ Test of permanence”

To remember this we should follow below mentioned steps:

Step1 find keyword from name of case. It is Municipal. . if this keyword is comfortable
for u, then its ok, but in case if u find it uncomfortable, then it can also be changed to its
nearest word..for example “ Municipality

Step2 Find keyword in fact of case. We have Test of Permanence as key word. Now read
this key words slowly and try to find the known word arising out of it. It is possibly”
Permanent Test

Step 3) Convert the year of judgement into Words using Phonetic method

Here 1996 can be treated as 96 only. Because even if we remember 96, we can
remember 1996.

Thus 96 can be converted into Pig

Step4 Create sentences of ur own which can effectively link all keywords from step(1-3)
in a funny way.
The possible sentence can be:” Municipality walon ne permanent Test khelne ke
liye Pig ko select kia”
Step5) visualize the situation mentally and strongly.

How to remember in exam???

For instance if we have to remember decided case in “ test of permanence” our mind
will automatically link to the mental picture where Municipality personnel were selecting
PiG

now if word “municipality” is known, then Municipal corporation of Greater Mumbai

will automatically known. And if Pig is known then year can be known as 96=1996

Another Example:

“ manufacture means bringing into existence a new substance”

( D.C.M. vs CCE)(1977)

Here D.C.M can be converted into “ Delhi chief minister” for better recall.

Year 1977=77 can be converted into the word” Kaka” .

The keyword from fact of case is “bringing into existence a new substance”
Now link all sentence in a funny way.the possible sentence can be
“Delhi Chief minister’s kaka is bringing into existence a new substance.

( it can be visualized in a funny way as Delhi chief minister’s kaka is giving

birth (ie bringing into existence a new substance”)

So friend remembering case laws and section number is not a problem…just

trigger ur sense of humour and make funny linking. U will remember
amazingly.
