Problem 1
Figure 1
A rocket follows a trajectory in the vertical plane and is tracked by radar from point A. At a
certain instant, the radar measurements give 𝑟 = 10.5 km, 𝑟̇ = 480 m/s, 𝜃̇ = 0, and
𝜃̈ = −0.00720 rad/s2 . Considering the data above, answer the following questions:
a. In terms of polar coordinates the following equation is given: 𝑟⃗ = 𝑟𝑒⃗𝑟 . Differentiate this
equation twice so that the equation appears for the acceleration of a particle (use vector
notation in polar coordinates!). (4p)
b. Using the radar data above, sketch the velocity situation of the rocket for this instant and
indicate the relation between the r-𝜃 system and the n-t system. (2p)
c. Determine the radius of curvature 𝜌 of the trajectory at this position of the rocket. (4p)
Figure 2
Determine the accelerations of bodies A and B and the tension in the cable due to the
application of the 300-N force. Neglect all friction and the masses of the pulleys. Your
solutions will be scored for the following parts:
Problem 3
Figure 3
Freight car A with a total mass of 80 Mg is moving along the horizontal track at 3 km/h.
Freight car B with a total mass of 60 Mg and moving at 5 km/h overtakes car A and is
coupled to it. They then move on together.
Figure 4
The drum is a uniform cylinder and friction at the pivot point O is neglected. Around the
drum a cable is wound with the masses of 8 kg and 10 kg attached. Answer the following
questions:
a. Draw the free body diagram and the kinetic diagram in two separate figures. (3p)
b. Set up the appropriate equations of motion. (2p)
c. Calculate the downward acceleration of the 10-kg block. (2p)
