Animation: Displays CAE model and analysis results information from
supported CAE solvers for finite element, kinematic, and
multibody analysis. Additional solver formats are supported
via translators that convert solver results to Altair's compact
H3D binary format.

XY Plotting: A powerful data analysis tool that interfaces with many

popular file formats. The sophisticated math engine is
capable of processing complex mathematical expressions
with large data sets. Altair's Templex text and numeric
processor allows the introduction of advanced annotations
and notes.

Video: Displays and synchronizes digital video data to CAE and XY

Plot information. AVI, BMP, TIFF and JPEG file formats are
supported.

Text: Allows text files to be viewed and edited directly in the

HyperView environment. Altair's Templex language can be
used to embed mathematical functionality.

A HyperView session can comprise multiple pages. Each page can hold one or
more windows with each window holding one type of datum. Multi-window
sessions may have all four clients represented.

The HyperView Menu

The menu bar across the top of the HyperView screen display consists of PC-
style drop down menus. The top-level menu choices vary, according to the active
window type.

To see the choices for each window type, click in the different windows on the
page. When a window is active, it will be highlighted with a blue border, and the
menu bar choices for that window type will be displayed.

Some menus are common to all window types (File, Edit View, Page, Study and
Help).

File Perform file operations pertaining to the HyperView session. Open and
save session files, set preferences, export curve and animation data,
print functions, etc.

Session files are used to save the entire HyperView session – all pages
 and window layouts. Load the data files for the individual windows using
the tool bar file functions.

Edit Cut and paste operations for windows and pages.

Overview of INP and ODB files in HyperView

For HyperView 6.0, the Plot client does not support plotting history data from
ABAQUS ODB files.

In the Animation client, either the ABAQUS INP or ODB file can be loaded for
model data. The ODB file needs to be ABAQUS version 6.3. For direct ODB file
loading, the ABAQUS 6.3 ODB API from Altair’s distribution CD needs to be
installed. The Altair tool AbaqusODB UpGrade updates ODB files created in
ABAQUS 6.2 (or earlier) to version 6.3.

When the INP file is read for model data, elements are organized into HyperView
components based on section properties defined in the INP file. HyperView
displays all components similar to HyperMesh. Also, for INP files from
HyperMesh, component ids and colors are preserved in HyperView. In most
cases, where a corresponding INP file is available, using it over the ODB file for
model data is better.

While the ODB file has ELSETs, where each element can belong to multiple
ELSETs, it does not have section property information. As a result, when the
ODB file is read for model data, elements are organized into HyperView
components based on ELSETs, where each element can belong to only one
component. This can cause ‘holes’ in components.

Exercise 1: Load INP and ODB files

Load the ABAQUS INP and ODB file from the beam and bracket assembly
analysis in Chapter 1 for model and results data.

1. Select Load model from the Client Tool Bar.

2. Click the Load model file browser button and select the file
Bracket_Complete.inp in the Bracket_Run1 folder.

3. Click the Load results file browser button and select the file
Bracket_Complete.odb in the Bracket_Run1 folder.

Altair Engineering Using ABAQUS with HyperWorks 83

4. Click Apply.

Exercise 2: Using the mouse buttons

To rotate the model

1. Move the cursor into the graphics area of the HyperView window.

2. Press and hold the CTRL+ left mouse button. Moving the mouse will
now rotate the model as if you are “grabbing” the model and dragging it
with the mouse.

To zoom in on a portion of the model

1. Move the cursor into the graphics area of the HyperView window.

2. Press the CTRL+ middle mouse button, circle an area of the model to
zoom in on.

To auto fit the model

3. Move the cursor into the graphics area of the HyperView window.

4. Use a quick click while pressing the CTRL+ middle mouse button. This
acts as an auto fit.

To translate the graphics

5. Move the cursor into the animation window.

6. Press the CTRL+ right Mouse Button and slide the mouse in the
direction you wish to translate the model on the window.

Exercise 3: Using View Controls

84 Using ABAQUS with HypeWorks Altair Engineering

This exercise explains the use of the buttons on the View controls panel to
perform operations like rotation, translation and zooming in and out on your
models. Many of these operations also apply to plots.

Hide or display the View controls panel by clicking the aqua bar to the right of
the View controls.

Using the rotation controls

The six arrow buttons on the view controls panel allow you to rotate the model
incrementally. The up/down and left/right arrow pairs rotate the model about the
horizontal or vertical screen axis. The curved arrows rotate the model clockwise
or counter-clockwise within the plane of the screen. The number in the middle of
the arrows sets the rotation increment in degrees.

Try the arrow keys to see how the model rotates.

Using the Zoom Controls

The magnifying glass and Fit buttons allow you to zoom in or out on the model.

The positive magnifying glass zooms in to the model to get a closer look. To
zoom out, use the negative magnifying glass icon .

Remember that the zoom factor is set using Tools / Options / View from the
menu bar.

The Fit button under the magnifying glass will fill the model to the screen area.

The Fit All Frames button considers the displacement of the model throughout
the animation and scales the view such that the entire displacement can be seen.
This is useful for viewing animations with very large deformations, such as a drop
test or kinematics model.

View presets and memories

The View presets are used to set a specific orientation of the model in relation to
the global coordinate system.

Altair Engineering Using ABAQUS with HyperWorks 85

The Top view orients the model in the X-Y plane, as if you are viewing from the
positive Z direction. The Frt (front) view orients the model as if you are viewing
from the positive X direction, and the Lft (left) from the positive Y direction.
These three views can also be used with the horizontal or vertical flip
buttons to obtain the bottom, right or rear views.

The view memories provide a means to store a particular view and recall it at a
later time in the session.

Exercise 4: Display components off and on

Display components off and on using the Entity Attributes panel.

1. Go to the Entity attributes panel

2. Click the switch next to Entity: and select Components.

In the box below Entity: is a list of components: bracket, cradle and

connection.

3. Select the bracket and cradle components by clicking on them in the

graphics area or by clicking their names in the Components list. Press the Ctrl
key to select multiple components.

4. Click Display: Off.

5. Click None to clear the component selection.

The connection component is displayed on, but nothing is in it. This

component does not contain the *KINEMATIC COUPLING entities because
they are not elements. HyperView loads only nodes and ABAQUS elements.

6. Click All.

7. Click Display: On button.

8. Click None to clear the component selection. The cradle and bracket is
displayed.

 ABAQUS systems in HyperView
 The Contour panel

Altair Engineering Using ABAQUS with HyperWorks 87

ABAQUS ODB file and Contour panel
The Contour panel, pictured below, has contour options for FEA results.

The panel is divided into four sections: Result type, Resolved in, Display
options, and Result display control. This overview focuses on ABAQUS ODB
files with all but the Resolved-in sections.

Result type section

The Result type section allows you to select the name of the result data type
that should be used to calculate the contours. Use the drop-down list under
Result type to make your selection.

The ODB file from the bracket and beam assembly analysis in Chapter One
contains displacement results and stress results at integration points and nodes.
Here is the list of result types in HyperView for this ODB file:

S-Global-Stress components (t)

S-Stress components (s)

S-Global-Stress components IP (t)

S-Stress components IP (s)

Displacement (v)

UR-Rotational displacement (v)

where

(t) Tensor type result. Refer to the section in Appendix A titled “Local
and Global Tensor Results” for additional information.

(s) Scalar results. Refer to the section in Appendix A titled “Local and
Global Tensor Results” for additional information.

88 Using ABAQUS with HypeWorks Altair Engineering

(v) Vector type result

IP Integration points. ODB file always has IP results. Component

names with no ‘IP’ prefix contain results for either
POSITION=NODES or POSITION=CENTROIDAL, whichever one
is present in the ODB file.

Global Element results with respect to the global coordinate system.

Result type components and invariants

A result type can either be nodal or elemental. The pull down menus next to the
1D, 2D and 3D checkboxes allow you to choose a component or invariant for the
selected result type.

Here is the list of component and invariant types for stress results at nodes (S-
Stress components (s)) from the ODB file for the Chapter One bracket and
beam analysis:

Mises, Tresca, Press, Inv3, Max Principal, Mid Principal, Min Principal, S11, S22,
S33, S12, S13, S23

Layer options for shell element results

HyperView has the following layer options for shell element results in the ODB
file from Chapter One’s bracket and beam analysis.

Max Maximum result value among all layers, i.e. maximum tensile
stress or minimum compressive stress

Extreme Maximum of the absolute results for all layers, i.e. maximum
absolute tensile stress or maximum absolute compressive
stress. Results plot (i.e. contour, iso-value plot) shows actual
values.

Min Minimum result value among all layers, i.e. minimum tensile
stress or maximum compressive stress

Section Point 1 Results on layer 1 of the shell elements

Section Point 5 Results on layer 5 of the shell elements

Display corner data option

The ABAQUS ODB reader supports element results at
POSITION=INTEGRATION POINTS (default), NODES, and CENTROIDAL. The
ODB file does not support AVERAGED AT NODES. The following describes how

Altair Engineering Using ABAQUS with HyperWorks 89

HyperView supports these results with respect to the Display corner data
option. Refer to the sections in Appendix A titled “1 st Order Elements” and “2nd
Order Elements” for schematics describing this information.

POSITION = INTEGRATION POINTS Display corner data on: integration

point results are at the nearest element
corners. Results are not extrapolated.

Display corner data off: average of

integration point results at element
centroid

POSITION = NODES Dispay corner data on: node results at

the corresponding element corners

Display corner data off: average of

node results at the element centroid

POSITION = CENTROIDAL Display corner data not enabled.

Centroidal result at element centroid.

Display options section

The display options change the appearance of the contour colors.

Average color For element results, this option averages colors to the node
and yields a blended effect. Averaging colors produces
smoothly blended contour plots with no distinct boundaries
between contour levels. Refer to the section in Appendix A
titled “Averaging at nodes” for additional information.

Discrete color Produces discrete color bands on contour plots with distinct
boundaries between contour levels. This option uses a
texture mapping capability in your graphics card. If your
graphics card does not support texture mapping, the
performance may slow down.

Edit Legend Click Edit Legend to change the legend properties.

Result display control section

The following options are available in the Result display control section:

Save Options Select any of the options listed to save them along with the
current legend. Font attributes allows you to save the
current font settings.

Exercise 3: Adjust colors of contour plot legend

When presenting results of an analysis, it is often desired to call attention to
problem areas. For example, if the maximum allowable stress for the cradle and
bracket assembly is 30 kN, we want to identify the areas of the assembly that
exceed this limit. By adjusting the values at the top part of the legend scale and
changing the colors, the areas of failure can be easily identified.

1. Click Edit Legend in the Contour panel.

Altair Engineering Using ABAQUS with HyperWorks 93

2. In the Edit Legend window, select Fixed for Numeric format.

3. In the Values section of the Edit Legend window, click the value 23.035, type
30 and then press ENTER.

This increases the resolution of the legend at the upper end of the scale,
assigning smaller increments to each color band between 30 and 35.065.

4. Left click on the yellow color block between the values 30 and 31.688. This
brings up the color pallet that allows you to change the color.

5. Select red and then click OK to close the color pallet.

6. Click the red color block at the top of the scale and assign white.

7. Click the Interpolate button.

8. Note the message “Select the first color to interpolate” in the lower left of the
Edit Legend window. Click the white color band in the Values section.

9. The message changes to “Select second color to interpolate”. Pick the red
color band. The top three color bands now show a smooth gradient from red
to white.

10. Click OK to apply the changes to the contour plot legend and close the Edit
Legend window.

Post-processing of the bracket and cradle assembly analysis is complete.
