1. Introduction:
1.1 Objective:
The objective of this document is to present complete analysis and design
procedure of Head Regulator R.C.C. conduit with M.S. liner.
This document discusses the structural system, the various acceptance
parameters to which it will comply and the material standards that the construction
will be expected to achieve as per the design intent.
This Design Basis Report (DBR) will form a reference document to maintain
the summary of design inputs/assumptions.
1.2 Units of Measurements:
The analysis and design will be done using SI system unless noted otherwise.
2. References:
Following references are used for analysis and design of pipe structure.
2.1 Design Standards and Codes
Design will be done in accordance with Indian Standard Codes and Practice.
The following codes of the Indian Standards are adopted in the Structural Design.
All the designs are conforming to the relevant Indian Standards. The relevant Indian
Standard Codes, which have been followed for the structural designs, are given
below.
 IS 2062 - 1992 Steel for general structural purposes specifications
 IS 1786 - 2008 High Strength Deformed Steel Bars and Wires for Concrete
Reinforcement - Specification
 IS 456 - 2000 Code of Practice for Plain and Reinforced Concrete
 IS 3370 (2) - 2009 Concrete Structures for Storage of Liquids - Code of
Practice - Part 2 Reinforced Concrete Structures
 Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics, P.N.Modi and S.M.Seth, Rajsons
publications, 18th edition (2011).

3. Scope of work:
The scope of work includes the analysis and design of
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. The
structure consists of intake chamber, R.C.C. conduit with M.S. liner. The structure is
designed for loads of water, soil and self weight which are mentioned in design note
in Appendix A. The document highlights the structural concept and the adopted
design philosophy. The structural design of the project has been governed by the
documents provided by the client and the references mentioned in the document.
The design of the structure will take following points into consideration:
 Most cost effective constructional system without affecting safety,
serviceability & durability of structure.
 Efficient functioning of the structure.
 Ease and speed of construction
4. Structural System:
4.1 Structural Geometry
The structure consists of R.C.C. conduit having length approximately 30.00 m.
This conduit is buried under the embankment of the earthen dam. Intake of conduit is

Page 3/11
submerged under water having head above sill level of about 6.00 m. As per the
hydraulic design, the inner diameter of R.C.C. conduit is 450 mm. For this head the
M.S. pipe requires wall thickness of 10 mm. The conduit has a slope of 1(V) in
100(H). As the structure is subjected to alternate drying and wetting, environmental
exposure condition considered for the structure is sever.
4.2 Structural Analysis and Design
The analysis and design of pipe structure is carried out manually with the help
of guide lines of IS codes and other allied references.
5. Material:
a) Structural steel of grade Fy-250, confirming to IS 2062-1992 is used for M.S. pipe.
b) Welds confirming to IS 816-1969 is used for design of welded connections.
c) Steel reinforcement confirming to IS 1786 - 2008.
d) Concrete confirming to IS 456 - 2000 and is 3370 (2) - 2009.
e) Steel reinforcement grade - Fe 500D.
f) Concrete grade - M20.

6. Basic Loads:
6.1 Loads:

The load of soil backfill of maximum height of 31.00 m is considered for

design of R.C.C. conduit. Self-weight of the materials is calculated on the basis of
unit weight given in IS:875-1987.

i. Unit weight of Steel – 78.50 kN/m3

ii. Unit weight of soil – 18.00 kN/m3
iii. Unit weight of saturated soil - 20.00 kN/m3
iv. Unit weight of water - 10.00 kN/m3
v. Unit weight of water - 23.00 kN/m3

7. Design Output and Recommendations :

The design is carried out by using principles of engineering under the
guidelines of afore mentioned IS codes. The details are presented in Appendix A.
