1 Scope
JDS-G113.5X1 provides information about John Deere’s dimensioning and tolerancing standard
harmonization and about ASME GD&T to ISO GPS key differences. It also includes information on
dimensioning and tolerancing past practices. Past practices are not to be used for new designs.
1.1 This standard can contain mandatory provisions, which are identified by the words “shall” or
“required”. Compliance with the mandatory provisions is required to claim conformance with this standard.
This standard can also contain guideline provisions, which are generally identified by the words “should” or
“recommended”. Compliance with the guideline provisions is not required, because they might not be
appropriate for all machines or all applications.
For purposes of this standard, the terms and definitions in JDS-G113X1 apply.
3 Standards Harmonization
3.1 In 2011, the Enterprise Engineering Council reaffirmed the use of ASME Y14.5M-1994 (R2004) as
the Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Standard for John Deere models and drawings.
3.2 In 2015, the Enterprise Engineering Council again reaffirmed the use of ASME Y14.5 as the
Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Standard for John Deere models and drawings and approved
the transition to ASME Y14.5-2009 beginning in 2016. Refer to JDS-G113.5 for information on this
transition.

DISTRIBUTION JDS-G113.5X1
Inch-metric (dual) dimensioned drawings shall not be used for new designs.
4.2.2 Identification
4.2.3.1 Dimensions are shown in both U.S. customary units and International System (SI) units, except in
special cases of standard commercial sizes for which an appropriate conversion is not known. In those
special cases the values are shown only in U.S. customary units or only in SI units.
4.2.3.2 Linear dimensions enclosed in square brackets are in millimeters (mm) unless otherwise labeled;
see Figure 3. Other dimensions are in inches unless otherwise labeled.
4.2.3.3 Surface texture values enclosed in square brackets are in micrometers (µm). Other surface texture
values are in micro-inches (µin) per JDS-G113.2.
4.2.4 Conversions
The conversions between U.S. customary units and SI units have equal status for the purpose of producing
functionally interchangeable parts in either system, regardless of whether the design was based on inch or
metric standards. The metric value should be placed in square brackets above or to the right of the U.S.
customary value. See Figure 3.

DISTRIBUTION
5.1 One of the key differences between ASME GD&T and ISO GPS is the envelope principle.
5.1.1 ASME Y14.5 specifies that the “envelope principle” or “perfect form at maximum material condition”
applies unless otherwise specified.
5.1.2 ISO 8015 specifies that the “principle of independency” applies, unless “envelope” requirement or
a form tolerance at maximum material size is specified.
5.1.3 The “envelope principle” or “perfect form at maximum material condition” per ASME Y14.5 and
“envelope requirement” per ISO 8015 both mean that the surface or surfaces of the feature shall not extend
beyond (violate) a condition (envelope) of perfect form at maximum material size. This is equivalent to zero
form tolerance at maximum material size (zero cylindricity tolerance at MMC or zero flatness tolerance at
MMC, as applicable). In this case, the limits of size of an individual feature prescribe the extent to which
variations in its geometric form, as well as size, are allowed.
5.1.4 The “principle of independency” per ISO 8015 and “perfect form at maximum material condition not
required” per ASME Y14.5 both mean that a linear tolerance controls only the actual local sizes (two-point
measurement) of a feature, but not its form deviations. In this case, if a relationship of size and form exists,
it must be specified on the drawing.
5.1.5 In cases where the Feature of Size has a functional requirement for assembly, it is recommended
to maintain the “envelope principle” (ASME) or invoke the “envelope requirement” (ISO).
5.1.6 Other differences between the standards exist. The appropriate standard should be consulted when
interpreting specifications.
6.1 For understanding of ISO Geometrical Product Specification (GPS) refer to ISO 14638.

7 References
For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.
7.1.2 Employees of suppliers with an approved John Deere supplier number can obtain access to
John Deere Standards via the JD Supply Network (JDSN). Access to JDSN is by approved individual name
and password. Suppliers should contact their Supply Management representative with questions about
JDSN.
Note 1 Only John Deere Standards which have been approved for supplier distribution are available via JDSN.
7.2.2 Suppliers are responsible for obtaining relevant external standards. In accordance with copyright
laws and Company policy, John Deere personnel shall not provide copies of these standards to suppliers.

Summary of Changes from Previous Edition
(For Information Only — Not Part of the Standard)
Moved information on the past practices of “Metric-Inch (Dual) Dimensioned Drawings” and “Inch-Metric
(Dual) Dimensioned Drawings” from JDS-G113.5 to this standard.
Added information to refer to ISO 14638 for a better understanding of ISO GPS.
