Plan for Compton high school 3/27 ● If the initial results aren’t what you want, alter the search terms and get more specific (get clues from the
initial search results e.g. you might see synonyms that would work or get ideas from the “People Also Ask” section)

1. Ask students to brainstorm their ideas and thoughts about human trafficking.
● Use quotation marks if you want your keywords in an exact order, e.g. “raining cats and dogs”
2. Provide “fun” facts about human trafficking and notes to give them more background.

● Remember:
3. Help students with research methods and how to search for certain topics.

○ use your best guess with spelling (Google will often understand)
Facts about Human Trafficking:( I was thinking maybe we can print little sheets for them to keep about the facts? - Amy)

○ don’t worry about punctuation

Globally, the average cost of a slave is $90.

○ understand that everyone’s results will be different, even if they use the same search terms (depending on
- According to the U.S. State Department, 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders every year, of which 80% are browser history, location etc.)
female and half are children.

● An important habit to get into is looking at the green URL and specifically the domain.
- California harbors 3 of the FBI’s 13 highest child sex trafficking areas on the nation: Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego

- Between 14,500 and 17,500 people are trafficked into the U.S. each year. ○ Use some intuition to decide whether it seems reliable. Does the URL look like a well-known site? Is it a
forum or opinion site? Is it an educational or government institution? Domains that include .gov or .edu might be more
reliable sources.
- There’s a great video we can show them on human trafficking after we talk about the thinking map

● When looking through possible sources, open sites in new tabs, leaving your search results in a tab for
Here’s the link easy access later (e.g. right-click on the title and click “Open link in new tab” or press Control/Command and click the
link).

https://www.lacounty.gov/human-trafficking
● Once you click on a link and land on a site, how do you know if it offers the information you need?

Research Methods & Tips:

● Look for the search box on a webpage or use Control F(Command F on Mac) to bring up a search box that can
scan the page.
To search -

● Understand that you cannot believe everything you read.

Field 3
● Type in some simple search terms using only the important keywords

○ This might involve checking multiple sources.

■ Set up class guidelines that ask classmates to cross check their information on two or three different sites before
assuming it’s accurate.
Field 3 Continuation
You might also like to set up a system for students to
organize their information while they’re searching. There
are many apps and online tools to curate, annotate, and
bookmark information, however, you could just set up a
simple system like a Google Doc or Spreadsheet.

● One free tool that is particularly useful is Wakelet.

○ Using Wakelet, you build collections of content from

around the web.

● The format and function is simple and clear meaning

and you don’t have to put much thought into using and
designing their collections.

○ Instead, you can focus on the important organizing

process.
Campus tour plan & tour reflection
The campus tour did not go as I had planned,I was very nervous yet very excited to give
students a tour of CSUDH.My opening activity begun with a small introduction about ourselves,
I begun the activity and we all made our brief introductions. The group of students consisted
of 9 females and 1 male, they came from Leuzinger High School.I had a opportunity to ask the
students what are their plans after graduating. Some students did not know what to respond
while there were others who mentioned going to community college or simply look for a job.
Through my tour, I showed them the financial aid office, the health clinic, the new queer
resource center, the library and the cultural centers that are located in the Locker Student
Union. I really enjoyed the tour, it was amazing getting to meet these students, I felt that
we connected. Coming from a similar area, I know the lack of resources sometimes within our
community can affect our views on pursuing to get a higher education after high school.
EVeryone seemed to very engaged and in shock of all these services that are provided at
no-cost through our tuition.
Service Learning Reflection
The saying goes, “never judge a book by its cover”...that is true. Growing up I heard that
Compton is “dangerous” city or simply “ghetto”. Once getting to Compton High School, the
area did scare me at first, but after sometime I became accustomed to it. When getting to
know the students more, my opinion quickly changed. When the students mentioned they were
waiting for acceptance letters from universities I realized that many of these students are
eager to continue in their education after high school.Even more I admire the students for
putting on the presentation on Human Trafficking in Compton and surrounding areas, I did
not know about this being a issue until going to Compton High School. These students are
very engaged and concerned on public issues happening now. I really enjoyed getting to work
with Compton High School and the Social Justice Fair, it was a beautiful and rewarding
experience that I will always be grateful for doing.
