Vincent’s Interview

Alix: [00:00:00] to begin with can you tell me your full name and age, please?

Vincent: My name is Vincent Lang and I'm 22 years old.

Alix: Do you reside outside of the UK when you're not in education?

Vincent: When I... sorry what does that mean

Alix: Sorry, do you live outside the UK when you're Not in education here?.

Vincent: Yes, I do. Do you want me to include the whole sentence saying like yes I live
outside the say and I live in Germany when I'm not in education [00:00:30] in the UK. I
can't keep a straight face. Okay. Yes. I do live in Germany when I'm not in the UK studying
here.

Alix: Can you tell me what you know about? If anything,

Vincent: I don't know a lot, I mean, I know that it's going to affect me in multiple ways. But
at this point everything is quite open still so I'm not quite sure [00:01:00] what is going to
affect me in. What way I know that traveling is probably going to be harder and some ways
but right now I'm not really sure what a what effect it has on me. Especially studying here.

Alix: Yeah. Yeah. Just going to take a quick pause so you can restrain him.

*Reframe Pause*

Alix: Yeah. Okay. [00:01:30] How do you get your news or information?

Vincent: Usually on Twitter, which is probably not the best place to go for any information
because you're not quite sure if this is correct or whatever but since living Here I don't
have a TV. I don't have a TV license. I can't really get my informations anywhere else. So
online is basically the only option I can look up any news. Obviously when I'm back in
Germany. I do get some news over other TV, but. Also, since I don't listen [00:02:00] to any
radio something like online is probably only source I can use.

Alix: so we don't really know what's happening with it. So you don't really know how it's
going to affect you can ask you like how does it make you feel like eating uncertain or.

Vincent: Yeah, I definitely feel uncertain because I don't know what to expect. I [00:02:30]
mean right now. I'm like traveling home quite often over the study weeks or vacations and
it's quite easy. So if you like after the brexit said it's going to be a struggle. I don't know. Do
I have to apply for a Visa? Is it going to be easy as it's going to be more expensive? So I
don't know how this whole process of like traveling is working out for me as well. So that is
quite unsure also, like how do I have to apply to anything to stay in the UK? How is it
affecting studying? Do I have to pay more as it going to be the same amount? So at this
point I just really don't know what to expect.

Alix: Are you hoping that the university is going to support you and help you in your.
I hope so. I mean, I got some emails from the University already like kind of not stating
what's happening but kind of putting me out to you the recent news to kind of now what
they are up to and stuff like that. So I feel like since they don't really know what's
happening either on how to follow the process, but I think they are there to [00:03:30]
support me in any way.

*Reframe Pause*

Vincent: It feels so serious like talking and then I'm looking in the camera like okay, this is
fun. But yeah,

Alix: so. Obviously, you've said that you're not you don't know a lot. Do you mind if I just
tell you a little bit about how [00:04:00] the leave campaign?

Vincent: Yes, please. Give me some nightmares. Yes. Go ahead. Yeah.

Alix: The leave campaign employed company called anger argue and their software
company and they collected people's Facebook data and they used that to make
predictions about user's Behavior. So it's sort of like advertising software, but it had never
been used in like a political way before and they used it to Target people with propaganda
on Facebook [00:04:30] to sort of convince them that leaving was the right thing to do now
notice. How do you think that sort of social media and online forums are affecting the way
politics is sort of discussed and the outcomes of referendums like this.

Vincent: Well, I think social media is such a big impact on politics of everything in general.
So I think it's quite bad that you now it can [00:05:00] influence you in a positive or A
negative way. So now that some people may have caused other people's to change their
mind is quite shocking and then I don't know it's quite you just don't know what to believe
anymore. Really. And it's quite I mean, I'm in a position right never had any contact with it I
never had the opportunity to decide or like to elect anything. So for me, it's like an outside
look on something but I don't know how it would feel if I would be in a position living
[00:05:30] here and getting some news and realising maybe the other side is better than
this side. So it's kind of hard to tell because I'm not really into that position, but I bet like
some people might not even. Intentionally like fell for it, but it's just like I think in general
bad that stuff like this is on the other it's like convincing people to not like follow what they
believe in and what they see as a future for this country, but like something that other
people try to convince them to [00:06:00] do
Alix: and final question is this sort of right-wing political movements and tastes like
becoming much more prominent in Europe. I'm sure there's a lot going on in Germany like
especially in France with the yellow vest movement. How do you what's your opinion on
the current political climate in the world?

Vincent: I mean, I'm not really sure if I'm not really interested in politics. I think I know it
does affect us in in a way. [00:06:30] But I don't know. I don't really don't have a lot of like
impact on it. I don't really researched a lot of it. Because I feel like as I mean, it's probably
bad to say that but I feel like as a person like electing someone you don't really have a lot
of power anyways of what's Happening. You can elect someone who is like stating what
they believe in and stating what they're going to do. But at the end there was can do
something else and it's kind of yeah, it's like politics is something [00:07:00] so exciting as
well because it's like changing over time is not some stuff is repeating some stuff. is new
and it's just I think I don't know. I don't I don't have a lot of information about that, but it's
just like. I don't know. I guess it's going to work out either way if I'm electing something,
you know, it's just yeah, I think you just have to stand for what you believe in. Either way.
This is like through like a political thing. I like [00:07:30] going out on the streets to fight for
what you believe in like some way. I think we all have the powers to change something if
we go out and do like like something that we believe in is the right way or if we just want to
change something in general. That makes sense. Okay

Alix: thank you so much for letting me interview you.

Vincent: Definitely. I mean I was like kind of going around the question because I'm like, I
don't know anything about this. So let's make this really General and

Alix: we're talking to [00:08:00] so many different people who know more or less about

Vincent: and i definitely not less because I'm like wow politics. I'm just going to stay out of
this because I don't do anything in that area

Alix: that’s okay is quite like. They don't make it. So it's exciting or easy to follow.

Vincent: Yeah, I think if you're like really into it because they're are friends of my they're
like look up stuff and they're like really into in like keep updating me, but I'm at this point
where I'm just like floating in [00:08:30] between and I'm just like, I don't know what to
expect because it's like this the fear of the unknown and kind of because you don't know
what's happening really? So I'm like this. I'm like in the pool and I don't know if I should stay
in the pool life. I should get out because he don't know what's going to happen. And I know
it's going to affect me in a bad way. Definitely, but I'm hoping everything will kind of work
out at the end, hopefully, so we'll see if I'm here next year by this time we know and if not,
I'm going to be in gotten back [00:09:00] in Germany, I guess, but we will see yes.

Sydney: I’m [00:09:30] happy.
