“Welcome parents and guardians to our information night on
the upcoming RE unit of work: Lent and Easter.
I am the year 4 teacher Miss Sparrow.
This term we will be completing our unit of work over 5 weeks.
All the lesson content has been placed up on our class
website, written on the board. Below is my email for if you
have any further questions after tonight.
If you could all please join in my our opening prayer.”

“In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit. Amen”

Slide Two: Opening Prayer

Father in Heaven, the light of your truth bestows sight to the
darkness of sinful eyes.
May this season of repentance bring us the blessing of Your
forgiveness and the gift of Your light.
Grant this through Christ our Lord
Amen.
Slide Three: Key Understandings
These are the key understandings from the unit of work.
o People show love and forgiveness
o Students are asked questions about how they show
love for others and why someone might say ‘no’ out
of love.
o Students are given activities to explore the act of
forgiveness and mercy and how these are part of
showing love.
o God always forgives
o Students explore how we can ask God for
forgiveness and why and how we have to show we
are truly sorry.
o Jesus forgives and shows mercy
o Students discuss ways in which Jesus taught his
followers about forgiving others; looking at
scripture stories and reflecting on the meaning of
sin.
o Students look at how the world might look today if
everyone always forgave and showed mercy.
o Students will be explicitly looking at the Sacrament
of Penance.
o Spiritual and Corporal works of mercy make the world a
better place
o The Spiritual and Corporal works of mercy are
practices that Catholics perform, especially during
Lent and the Sacrament of Penance.
o The Church focuses on the Crucifixion of Jesus on Good
Friday
o Students look at the stations of the cross and why
the Cross is so important to the Catholic tradition
o Followers of Jesus focus on love, mercy and forgiveness
during Lent.
o Students look at how they can show love for others
in the way that Jesus did.
o Students reflect on how Lent is a special time
especially for forgiveness.

Slide Four: Assessment

Students will be compiling their work samples to create their
own Lent booklet. This will have work samples from across
the 25 lessons within it. Whilst the lessons are during RE
time, a lot of the work samples coincide with what students
will be doing during English and Art, so that they have more
time to work on their final pieces to finish them off.
It is essential for both your child and you to be aware that I
will be assessing their understanding of the Catholic faith, not
their personal faith.

Slide Five: At Home

As parents, you are the primary educators in the Catholic
Education. It is expected that you will role model to your child
how to participate in the Sacrament of Penance at church.
While I understand some of you are not Catholic, you can still
demonstrate to your child what it is to be involved in the
church or how you can live a peaceful life of forgiveness and
love at home and in the community.
To assist in your child’s education of the Catholic faith,
discussing at home what students are learning and asking
them to explain to you how they can ask for forgiveness is
vital to furthering their understanding and knowledge.
As well as you can become involved in your local parish or
contact them for further information.
Again, whether or not you are Catholic, it is imperative to role
model a life of forgiveness and love for your child.

Slide Six: Parent Activity

This is an activity that students will be doing in their first
lesson. Please take three different coloured sticky-notes. Write
or draw what you believe love or forgiveness looks like, sounds
like and feels like.
We will discuss a few of the answers and how you can further
discuss this with your child at home.

Slide Seven: Things to Consider

It’s really important to reflect on how you can role model to
your child love and forgiveness at home and in the
community.
Especially when your child does something wrong or someone
has done something to upset them. To be open to discussion
and conversation about how you and your child can show love
and forgiveness is essential to furthering their belief and
understanding of the Catholic Faith, as well as their
understanding of what it means to do right and wrong.
For students that are non-Catholic, we still expect them to be
involved where they can. This means that whilst they do not
have to actively participate in performing the mass, it is
expected that they attend to show support to their fellow
peers. This is the same for in class activities, as I will not be
assessing their faith but their understanding of the religion.

All the lessons have been placed on the school website where
you can look at them with your child at home. The Children’s
literature and scripture stories are also there if you want to
research them prior to the lesson this will benefit your
student’s understanding of the topic.

Any questions?

Slide Eight: Thank you

Thank you for coming, we appreciate your support in your
child’s learning. The date for mass is on the class website as
well as I will post a date for our gallery walk, where we invite
you to come and see what your child has done across the 25
lessons.
