ASSIGNMENT

Semester 1, 2019
Unit: Power Electronics (ETEN 3003/6001)
Title: Take home Assignment
Activity: Answer all questions
Total Marks: 30

General Guidelines:
 Students are encouraged to prepare the assignment using Microsoft word or latex software.
 Partial marking will be there, so please show all the steps clearly.
 This is an individual assignment. Copying from each other is strictly prohibited and if
identified, relevant groups/parties will end of up ZERO mark.
 Any delayed submission will be graded within 50% of the total assignment marking.
 For Question 3, students need to send the softcopy by email (See Notes in Question 3).
 Students should submit the assignment report as hardcopy which will contain solutions for all
three questions to the Assignment Office. Please use the Coversheet available in Blackboard
for hard copy submission.
 Submission Deadline is Friday, May 17, 2019
QUESTION 1: (10 MARKS)

PART-A: (5 marks)
Fig. 1(a) shows a single-phase, fully-controlled rectifier and Fig. 1(b) represents its characteristic. The
behavior of the controlled rectifier for a given firing angle, α, and battery current, Ibat, is given in the
characteristics. The dotted line, AB, represents the limiting case of the behavior on each angle, α.
The rectifier is supplied from a 230 V, 50 Hz, source and used as a battery charger to control the
battery current, Ibat. E represents the equivalent of the number of series batteries, thus E is variable.
LAC and LDC may be assumed to be ideal. The average output voltage of the rectifier, Vout is given by,

2Vm  X I 
Vout   cos   AC bat  ; where X AC  L AC and  is fring angle
  Vm 

And the equation of the curve-AB is given by:

Vout X I
 AC bat  1
2Vm  Vm

LDC

(a) Clearly explain the roles of LAC and LDC in the topology.
(b) For a short-circuit at the battery terminal, obtain the expression for the maximum possible
current through LDC and find its value.

PART-B: (5 marks)
A battery with a terminal voltage of 145 V is charged by the rectifier in PART-A. The current is to be
kept at 10 A. The rectifier parameters are:

LDC= 1 mH, LAC = 10 mH

(a) Calculate the firing angle required.

(b) During the turn-off, the current Ibat is to be reduced at the fastest possible rate. Calculate the
maximum decay rate possible when Ibat is at 10 A.

QUESTION 2: (2+4+2=8 MARKS)

The single phase full wave bridge rectifier shown in Fig. 3 has an RL-source load with R =4Ω, L=40
mH, Vdc =24 V. The ac source is 120 V rms at 60 Hz.

Fig. 1. Single phase full wave bridge rectifier

Assume the following dominant 2nd and 4th harmonics exist in the circuit.

n Vn (V) Zn (Ω) In (A)

2 72.0 30.4 2.37
4 14.4 60.5 0.238
Determine the followings:

a) The power absorbed by the dc source

b) The power absorbed by the resistor
c) The circuit power factor
QUESTION 3: (12 MARKS)
PART-A
Design a boost converter with a switching frequency of 10 kHz to supply 1A at 5V from a 3.3V supply.
Choose your components such that the inductor ripple current (peak-peak) is below 8% and the output
ripple voltage (peak-peak) is below 6%. (2 mark)

PART-B
Simulate the circuit using the parameters given and obtained from PART-A. A closed-loop control
should be developed to regulate the voltage. Use MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD/EMTDC, or any other
software for simulation. Show the following responses. (10 marks)

1. Show responses for input voltage, output voltage, inductor current, load current for 5 s.
2. Show a zoomed view of inductor current and output voltage for few cycles (in between 3 s to
4 s) which indicate that the responses are following given design requirements specified in
PART-A.
3. Run the simulation for 10 s using a step change for input voltage. Keep input voltage 3.3V until
5 s and at 5 s the voltage will be changed at 4 V which will be kept unchanged until 10 s. Show
responses for input voltage, output voltage, inductor current, load current for entire 10 s.
Also, show a zoomed view of inductor current and output voltage for few cycles (in between
7 s to 8 s) which indicate that the responses are following given design requirements specified
in PART-A.

Notes:
 All responses should be clearly visible. Use proper scaling and labeling for all responses as
discussed in the class
 Please send the softcopy of the program (PSCAD/MATLAB/Others) to smmuyeen@gmail.com.
The email subject should include your STUDENT ID AND FULL NAME. The softcopy should be
submitted by email before you submit the hardcopy.
