Historical background - Relevance of FEA to design problems, Application to the continuum - Discretization - Matr approach, Matrix algebra - Gaussian elimination - Governing equations for continuum - Classical techniques in FEM Weighted residual method - Ritz method, Galerkin method UNIT - II ONE DIMENSIONAL PROBLEMS [1 Finite element modeling - Coordinates and shape functions - Potential energy approach - Element matrices and vect - Assembly for global equations - Boundary conditions - Shapes functions - Applications to axial loadings of rods Extension to plane trusses - Bending of beams - Finite element formulation of stiffness matrix and load vectors Assembly to global equations - Boundary conditions - Solutions and post processing - Example problems. UNIT - III TWO DIMENSIONAL PROBLEMS [1: Finite element modeling - CST element - Element equations, Load vectors and boundary conditions - Assembly - Plar stress, Plane strain and axisymmetric problems, engine cylinder. UNIT -IV APPLICATIONS [1 Eigen value problems - Application to one dimensional bar elements - lumped mass method - Application to engir cylinder heat transfer analysis (Conduction and Convection) UNIT - V ISOPARAMETRIC FORMULATION [1 Natural co-ordinate systems - Isoparametric elements - Shape functions for iso parametric elements - One and ~ dimensions - Serendipity elements - Numerical integration and application to plane stress problems - Matrix solu~ techniques - Solutions techniques to dynamic problems - Introduction to analysis software. Total (L: 45 T:15) = 60 Peri Course Outcomes: On completion of this course, the students will be able to: • Understand the discretization and finite element approach • Select appropriate elements to solve physical and engineering problems with emphasis as an automobile engineering applications • Derive element matrix equation by different methods by applying basic laws in mechanics and integration by parts. t Understand the concept of higher order elements and FEA softwares. • Understand the concept of isoparametric elements and dynamic problems.
