The viewing tools are available in the View toolbar as shown in Fig. 1.
Zoom Functions
The Zoom functions changes the relative size of the display within the currently active Document window,
but do not alter the contents.
Zoom In
This enlarges a view by 200% and is useful for a closer look at an object. The entire display can be enlarged
or you can use the mouse to draw a rectangle that is zoomed and becomes the focus of an enlarged view.
Original view
To zoom in
To zoom out
• Click the Zoom Out button or select View > Zoom Out.
The display is reduced by 50%.
Zoom Paper
Displays the actual size according to the paper unit setting in your environment (e.g. centimeters).
• Click the Zoom Paper button or select View > Zoom Paper.
The drawing is displayed according to the actual size.
Zoom Overview
Fits the whole display in the window so the overall appearance can be viewed.
To zoom to overview
• Click the Zoom Overview button or select View > Zoom Overview.
The display is reduced to fit in the window.
Current Appearance
Selections made in the Appearance window can be automatically applied to new objects.
The last object selected, including clicking on the background, sets the Current Appearance. If you click on the
background (not on an object), objects then drawn will have the formatting color of the background and may
“disappear". Select the object you have drawn (if necessary, use Edit > Select All to locate the object) and
change the color to make the object “reappear”, then toggle OFF Current Appearance to continue drawing
objects.
1. Click the Current Appearance button or select View > Current Appearance.
2. Select the object with the appearance attributes to be copied. This selection process sets the
Appearance window with the attributes of the chosen object.
3. Draw the new object.
The new object will be drawn with the appearance attributes of the object whose appearance was
originally selected. For example, if a green, dashed polyline is selected, all subsequent objects will
be drawn with a green, dashed line.
4. Click the Current Appearance button or select View > Current Appearance to toggle
OFF the Current Appearance tool.
Show RulerS
According to the units system selected for your project, metric or imperial rulers can be displayed on the X
and Y axes of the view. The ruler units are located in the top left corner. Show Ruler is view specific, that
is the rulers can be displayed in one view and turned off in another.
Ruler Units
Rulers
The units change according to the display so that the scale on the X and Y axes can still be viewed.
• Click the Show Rulers button or select View > Show Rulers.
Show Grid
To toggle the display of grid lines in the current view
• Click the Show Grid button or select View > Show Grid.
Grid Size
The default grid size setting is 10 mm or 1/2 inch depending on the unit system setting for your project.
Grid Snap
The Grid Snap in Artist is useful when drawing objects. The snap is based on the mouse pointer, so it is
important to click the mouse pointer near a grid or select an object near a grid corner to achieve the best
results.
Objects drawn in Artist have a center control point which is used to align the object with a grid line.
Grid snap helps to set the alignment and size of objects. For example, with a setting of 10 mm, objects snap to
the nearest grid placed every 10 mm in the drawing window.
NOTE The Grid Snap and Object Snap commands are mutually exclusive.
1. To aid in object drawing, ensure the gridlines are displayed, click the Show Grid button or
select View > Show Grid.
2. Click the Grid Snap button or select View > Grid Snap.
Object Snap
Object Snap snaps the edges of two objects together. The snap is based on the mouse pointer, so it is important
to click the mouse pointer near the edge of an existing object to achieve the best results.
Grid snap helps to set the alignment and size of objects. The Object Snap option snaps new objects to existing
objects if the mouse is clicked near the existing object.
1. Click the Object Snap button or select View > Object Snap.
Displaying Variables
When viewing a picture containing text variables or inserting variable text into a picture to aid in
positioning the text, use the Variable Names feature to hide or display variable text names.

The Appearance window is used in Artist to format the appearance of objects such as color, line type, text style
and fill patterns. It also provides a standard set of markers such as well and point symbols.

“Dockable Windows” on page 1-13.
When using the Appearance window to set formatting attributes, the change is made to the object as soon
as you select the required attribute.
In the Appearance window, only those formatting attributes relevant to a selected object are available. If
the formatting attribute is not applicable, the section is grayed out. For example, when editing markers,
only the Color and Marker sections are available. You cannot, for instance, change the text size as there is
no text associated with a marker as shown in Fig. 6.
Fig. 6: Example illustrating the available attributes for the selected object
How to use the attributes in the Appearance window is illustrated in Fig. 7 and uses the Marker section as
an example.
The values displayed for selection for Line Width, Text Height, Fill and Marker Size are determined by your
project’s unit system – metric (CM) or imperial (IN). Fig. 8 illustrates this point with the Line Width values
displayed for imperial and mixed/metric unit systems.
Fig. 8: Line width values displayed for imperial and mixed/metric unit systems
Color
The color section of the Appearance window as shown in Fig. 10, determines the color of the selected object
or text.
Color squares
The most recently selected colors are stored at the top of the color list for quick selection.
Appearance button
Use the Line attributes to set the line style and width for objects such as grids, polylines, rectangles and
circles.

Text
The Text section of the Appearance palette is used to set the font style, size and angle, and position of text.

Fill
Fill is used to set the fill (lithology) pattern of enclosed objects. Fill patterns are selected from a palette of
standard patterns. The Fill attributes are shown in Fig. 15.
Fill patterns
See Also
“Creating Fill Patterns” on page 2-25 for information on user defined patterns.
Marker
Marker is used to set marker types from a palette of standard markers representing well markers, point
symbols, etc. The Marker section of the Appearance window is shown in Fig. 16.
Markers
See Also
“Creating Markers” on page 2-24 for information on user defined markers.
To specify a marker
Specify the marker type using one of the following methods:
• Click the Dropdown List button next to the Marker name field; select the required marker.
• Click the More>> button and click the desired marker in the Marker tab.
Set the size of the marker using one of the following methods:
• Click the Dropdown List button and select the required value
• Click in the Size field and enter the required value.
• In Artist, the size of a marker can also be changed by selecting it with the mouse and then dragging
one of its corners.
Variables may be used within Artist for text substitution. Variable names are enclosed in curly braces { }.
Variable Text
User defined parameters specified in a login environment or UNIX shell can be set.
For example:
setenv GEOLOGIST ‘John Smith’
This could be used to define a name, {GEOLOGIST}. Care needs to be taken with the positioning of all variable
text, as the length of the text will vary according to the well being displayed.
Variable Markers
To insert a variable marker, you need to insert a marker and then via the Appearance window, change the
marker name to symbol. This will prompt the application, for example Well, to retrieve the well symbol from
the current well you are using.
Variable Links
The filename specified in a link can also be a variable name so that the file contained in the plots directory,
which is linked, varies according to the use made of the drawing. A variable link is specified by replacing
botein.cgm
capella.cgm
