This reduces a view by 50%.

To zoom out

• Click the Zoom Out button or select View > Zoom Out.

To zoom to overview

• Click the Zoom Overview button or select View > Zoom Overview.
The display is reduced to fit in the window.

Current Appearance
Selections made in the Appearance window can be automatically applied to new objects.
The last object selected, including clicking on the background, sets the Current Appearance. If you click on the
background (not on an object), objects then drawn will have the formatting color of the background and may
“disappear". Select the object you have drawn (if necessary, use Edit > Select All to locate the object) and
change the color to make the object “reappear”, then toggle OFF Current Appearance to continue drawing
objects.

To set the current appearance

1. Click the Current Appearance button or select View > Current Appearance.
2. Select the object with the appearance attributes to be copied. This selection process sets the
Appearance window with the attributes of the chosen object.
3. Draw the new object.
The new object will be drawn with the appearance attributes of the object whose appearance was
originally selected. For example, if a green, dashed polyline is selected, all subsequent objects will
be drawn with a green, dashed line.

Grid Size
The default grid size setting is 10 mm or 1/2 inch depending on the unit system setting for your project.

To change the grid size

• Select View > Grid Size and select the required setting.

Grid Snap
The Grid Snap in Artist is useful when drawing objects. The snap is based on the mouse pointer, so it is
important to click the mouse pointer near a grid or select an object near a grid corner to achieve the best
results.
Objects drawn in Artist have a center control point which is used to align the object with a grid line.
Grid snap helps to set the alignment and size of objects. For example, with a setting of 10 mm, objects snap to
the nearest grid placed every 10 mm in the drawing window.

NOTE The Grid Snap and Object Snap commands are mutually exclusive.

To set the grid snap

1. To aid in object drawing, ensure the gridlines are displayed, click the Show Grid button or
select View > Show Grid.

2. Click the Grid Snap button or select View > Grid Snap.

Object Snap
Object Snap snaps the edges of two objects together. The snap is based on the mouse pointer, so it is important
to click the mouse pointer near the edge of an existing object to achieve the best results.
Grid snap helps to set the alignment and size of objects. The Object Snap option snaps new objects to existing
objects if the mouse is clicked near the existing object.

Appearance Window

The Appearance window is used in Artist to format the appearance of objects such as color, line type, text style
and fill patterns. It also provides a standard set of markers such as well and point symbols.

Displaying the Appearance Window

The Appearance window is a dockable window—a window which remains open until closed, can be docked
within an application window or free-floating independant of the application window..
The default location of the Appearance window differs depending on the currently open application window.
For example, in Well the Appearance window is displayed as a tab in the lower section of the right docking
area, along with the Colormap and Dip Category windows.

Using the Appearance Window

Overview

When using the Appearance window to set formatting attributes, the change is made to the object as soon
as you select the required attribute.
In the Appearance window, only those formatting attributes relevant to a selected object are available. If
the formatting attribute is not applicable, the section is grayed out. For example, when editing markers,
only the Color and Marker sections are available. You cannot, for instance, change the text size as there is
no text associated with a marker as shown in Fig. 6.

Fig. 6: Example illustrating the available attributes for the selected object

How to use the attributes in the Appearance window is illustrated in Fig. 7 and uses the Marker section as
an example.

Setting the position of text

The Appearance window allows you to change the position of inserted text by selecting one of
several options in the Align (text position) fields. The options in the Align fields set the position of
text in relation to the initial insertion point (unless the text has been graphically resized, in which
case it is in relation to the bottom left corner of the text box).
For multiline text; Left, Center, and Right also applies to each line (e.g. all lines aligned left, each
line centered or all lines aligned right).
Fig. 13 identifies each alignment position and Fig. 14 shows some examples of text positions.

Using Variables

Variables may be used within Artist for text substitution. Variable names are enclosed in curly braces { }.

Variable Text
User defined parameters specified in a login environment or UNIX shell can be set.
For example:
setenv GEOLOGIST ‘John Smith’
This could be used to define a name, {GEOLOGIST}. Care needs to be taken with the positioning of all variable
text, as the length of the text will vary according to the well being displayed.

Variable Text Syntax

Use the following notation to edit text displayed by text variables (for example, to truncate a tool name from a
displayed name, and so on).
• {NAME:Start:Finish}
Shows everything between the first occurrence of the character start and the character finish; use
numerical characters to specify an index location (e.g. 1:4 shows characters 2 and 3).
• {NAME}
Displays the full name.
• {NAME::6} or {NAME:6}
Truncate the string at the sixth character.
• {NAME::03}
The string is padded with zeros to make a total length of 3 characters.
• {NAME:4:}
Start the string after the fourth character.
• {NAME:4:3}
Start the string after the fourth character with a total length of 3 characters.
• {NAME::A4}
Truncate the string at the first ‘A’ or the total length is 4 characters.
• {NAME:A2:}
Start the string at the first ‘A’ or after the second character.
• {NAME::+2} or {NAME:+2
Round decimals to 2 places.
• {NAME::<char>} or {NAME:<char>}

Geolog® 7 – Paradigm™ 2011 General Artist Tools 5-21

With Epos® 4.1 Data Management
A character will truncate the building block at the first <char> within the string (e.g. using an
underscore, _ , if tool_string has a value of triple_combo {tool_string:_} returns the
value triple).
• %
Used in name translation specifications to increment a value. Commonly used in name
translations to define a set name where the set name is based on a tool string which can occur
in the data file multiple times (e.g. multiple runs).
Using a specification of {tool_string}%, if the tool string occurs once, _1 is not added; for
multiple occurrences, an underscore (_) and sequential number starting from 1 is added at the
end of the string (e.g. WIRE_1, WIRE_2, etc.).

Variable Markers
To insert a variable marker, you need to insert a marker and then via the Appearance window, change the
marker name to symbol. This will prompt the application, for example Well, to retrieve the well symbol from
the current well you are using.

2. On the "Appearance Window" on page 5-7, click the More>> button.
3. Select {} SYMBOL (Special marker which expands to the well symbol.) from the
Marker tab.

Variable Links
The filename specified in a link can also be a variable name so that the file contained in the plots directory,
which is linked, varies according to the use made of the drawing. A variable link is specified by replacing

Geolog® 7 – Paradigm™ 2011 General Artist Tools 5-23

With Epos® 4.1 Data Management
the filename with a name in curly braces { }. The name can be any variable text name which acquires a
value when used in other applications.
The following is an example of using a variable link for Geolog’s Layout:
1. In Artist a variable link is added (see “Inserting a Link” on page 2-16) to the
company_header.cgm file—{constant.well} is entered for the file name.

2. The Artist file, company_header.cgm, is saved.

3. In Geolog’s Project, several plots are generated of mapsheets showing individual well locations.
The plots are saved as atlas.cgm, botein.cgm and capella.cgm.
4. In Geolog’s Layout, company_header.cgm is inserted into the header of company.layout.
The layout will then always display the appropriate mapsheet according to the well currently
open/selected for processing.
