GENERAL REGULATIONS

1. Only students of Birmingham Conservatoire are eligible to enter for the competitions described
except where otherwise stated.

2. Application forms are available by the student pigeon holes. These must be countersigned by the
student's teacher and returned to the office by the stipulated date. A separate form must be
completed for each competition, which a student wishes to enter. All entry forms to be completed
in BLOCK CAPITALS.

3. The application form should include details of the programme together with projected timings for
approval by the organiser of the competition in collaboration with senior colleagues. Programme
details must be correct and legible. Entries with no programme details will NOT be
accepted.

4. Programmes must not exceed the prescribed length. The adjudicating panel reserves the right to
make an assessment without hearing the complete programme.

5. A student must provide his/her own accompanist where appropriate.

6. Any student having gained an annual prize is not normally eligible to compete again for the same prize.

7. Prizes will be awarded only if a sufficiently high standard of performance has been reached.

8. It may be necessary to hold Preliminary Rounds in any competition.

9. In the Preliminary Rounds the adjudication panel shall normally consist of at least two members.
Playing time is a minimum of seven minutes.

10. Adjudicators should normally be provided with the music for competitions, particularly in the Final
Round. Photocopies are acceptable: these will be destroyed after the competition.

11. Performance from memory, although desirable, is not obligatory.

12. The adjudication will normally take place immediately after the competition (Final Round). Written
comments will not be available.

13. The decision of the adjudicators is final.


14. The terminology of this handbook is as follows:
 A first-year student is one who is in his or her first undergraduate year.
 A postgraduate student is one enrolled on one of the Conservatoire's MMus, PGDip, PGCert or
Advanced Postgraduate Diploma (Professional Performance) courses.
 Students undertaking a one year Personal Study Programme at undergraduate level are
 Subject to regulations pertaining to undergraduate students unless otherwise stated.
 Students undertaking a one-year Personal Study Programme at postgraduate level are
 Subject to regulations pertaining to postgraduate students unless otherwise stated..
15. Candidates are advised that all aspects of presentation (including stage manner and dress) will
be taken into account by the adjudicators.

16. All students who complete an application form for a competition thereby undertake to observe the
regulations set out in this handbook.

17. All general enquiries concerning competitions and prizes should be made to the Head of
Professional Development.

18. Entries to be scrutinised by the Head of School and First Study Tutor.

19. Details of preliminary rounds will be arranged by the relevant competition organiser or Head of
Department as appropriate.

20. All entries must be submitted to the Administration Office by 3.00pm on the day of the deadline.
Please ensure all sections on the entry are completed, failure to do so may result in your entry
being withdrawn.
