Rizal wrote to Blumentritt about the honesty, courtesy, cleanliness, and industry of the
Japanese people. But also expressed his disgust on the use of the mandrawn jinrikisha.

CHAPTER 6

Exile 1892-1896
Rizal could live at the Parish convent on the ff. conditions:
1. That Rizal publicly retract his errors concerning religion, and make statements that were
clearly pro-Spanish and against revolution.
2. That he performs the church rites and make a general confession of his past life.
3. That he conducts himself in an exemplary manner as a Spanish subject and a man of
religion.
Rizal did not agree with these conditions. He lived in the house of the commandant, Captain
Carnicero. Rizal wrote “A Don Ricardo Carnicero” for his birthday.
Captain Carnicero, Dr. Rizal, and Francisco Equilor jointly owned a lottery ticket no. 9736 which
won 2nd price in Manila Lottery. Rizal shared 6,200 of this and gave his father 2,000 and 200 to
his friend Basamin Hong Kong.
Rizal had a debate with Father Pastells on religion, but they remained friends.
Rizal remained as a Catholic but it’s the Catholicism that inquires and enlightens, the
“Catholicism of Renan and Teilhard de Chardin”
Rizal became involved in a quarrel with a French acquaintance, Mr. Juan Lardet, a businessman.
Fr. Pastells instructed Fr. Obach and Fr. Jose Villaclara to try their best to bring back Rizal within
the Catholic fold.
Florencio Namanan spied on Rizal hid in the name Pablo Mercado.

Rizal built a water system for Dapitan, spent many months draining the marshes in order to get
rid of Malaria, equipped a lighting system in the town, and remodeled the town plaza.
He taught from 3 pupils to 16 and later to 21. These pupils did not pay any tuition but instead he
made them work in his garden, fields and construction projects in the community. He teach
them reading, writing, languages (Eng&Spanish), geography, history, mathematics
(arithmetic&geometry), industrial work, nature study, morals and gymnastics from 2:00pm to
4:00pm.
Rizal built up a rich collection of oncology, which consisted 346 shells representing 203 species.
He discovered some rare specimen: draco rizali, apogonia rizali, rhacoporus rizali.

He bought 16 hectares of land in Talisay and acquired more totaling 70 hectares containing
6,000 hemp plants, 1,000 coconut trees, numerous fruit trees, sugarcane, corn, coffee and
cacao.
He made profitable business ventures (in partnership with Ramon Carreon) in fishing, copra,
and hemp industries. (also in lime manufacturing). His most profitable business venture was in
the hemp industry where he made P2,000 in one stroke.
Rizal organized the Cooperative Asscociation of Dapitan Farmers to break the Chinese
monopoly.
Rizal invented sulpukan, a machine for making bricks that could manufacture about 6,000
bricks daily.
Rizal wrote “Mi Retiro” (My Retreat) in response to his mother’s request. It was acclaimed by
literary critics as one of the best ever penned by Rizal.
Mr. George Taufer – Josephine Bracken’s adoptive father. Father Obach – priest of Dapitan who
refuses to marry them w/o the permission of the Bishop of Cebu.
Dr. Pio Valenzuela informed Rizal of the plan of the Katipunan to launch a revolution.
Rizal objected to Bonifacio’s plan because he believed that it was premature: 1) the people are
not ready for revolution, 2) arms and funds must first be collected before raising the cry of
revolution.
Rizal volunteered as a military doctor in Cuba because there is a raging yellow fever epidemic,
he was assigned as to the Army of Operations in Cuba, detailed to the Medical Crops.
Rizal wrote The Song of the Travelers (El Canto del Viajero).
On July 31, 1896 his exile in Dapitan came to an end.

CHAPTER 7

Rizal’s diary was confiscated by the Spanish authorities and he was not able to record from Oct
12(M) to Nov 1(Su)
Chief Justice Loinel Cox denied the writ on the ground that the Colon was carrying Spanish
troops to the PH.

December 25, 1896 – Rizal’s saddest Christmas, he wrote to his defender.

His defender ended his defense with “The judges cannot be vindictive; the judges can only be
just.”
Rizal read a supplementary defense (he wrote in his prison cell), which has twelve points.
On December 26th the court decision was submitted to Gov.Gen. Polavieja, he sought the
opinion of Judge Advocate Gen. Nicolas dela Pena on the court decision, the later affirmed the
death verdict. Polavieja approved the decision on Dec. 28th. Shooting at 7:00AM, 30th of Dec, in
the field of Bagumbayan.
Mi último Adios (My Last Farewell) – poem written on the eve of his execution. US Rep. Henry
A. Cooper recited this poem before the US Congress.
