Aruga Interactive: Proposed Luxury Hotel and Resort in Iloilo

Interweaving Digital Media and Physical Structures to Boost the

Potential in Architecture to Surprise and Reinvent Leisure Amenities

CHAPTER II – SYSTEM OF RESEARCH

Architecture in order to establish itself must turn to other disciplines for authority.
Architecture is stretched along a line from the arts to the sciences and then sliced into
chunks and be carefully studied, therefore designing a building is basically a form of
research, and so the purpose of this study is to help the proponent to arrive at a more in-
depth understanding and feasible output of the proposed hotel and resort. (Dubberly, 2004)

The 4 purpose of this chapter are to (1) describe the research paradigm & methodology/ies
of the study, (2) Explain the sample selection, (3) Describe the procedure used in
designing the instrument and collecting the data, and (4) provide an explanation of the
statistical procedures used to analyze the data).

II.1 DESIGN RESEARCH PARADIGM

Illustrated below is the model of the architectural research study of the proposed Aruga
Interactive, to summarize how the output of the study is achieved and this output shall be
revealed on the design translation phase.

serve as a backbone of a systematic research project and solidify the processing of
information. The methodology used is a combined modification of the methods of designer
John Chris Jones, and the five-stage model proposed by the Hasso-Plattner Institute of
Design at Stanford. (Hasso Plattner, 2012)

II.3 RESEARCH PROCESS

1. EMPHATIZE

The first stage of any study is to gain an empathic interest and afterwards, empathic
understanding of the current trends, issues, needs and possibilities within the society.
Empathy is crucial to a human-centered process such as Architectural research and
design, as it allows the researcher to locate and gain insight into users and their needs,
especially to developments like hotels and resorts that provide both accommodation and
comfort to its users.

Depending on time constraints, a substantial amount of information are gathered at this

stage to use during the next stage and to develop the best possible understanding of the
users, their needs, and the problems that underlie the development of a particular topic
chosen such as emerging tourism in the Philippines.

2. IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM

After coming up with the subject interest of her study, the researcher must now identify
the problem to be investigated and what area of concern will be focused on and its
hypothesis. This step will set the boundary of the study including its focus scope and
delimitation.

2.A. Identifying the Research Topic

The research topic will feature pioneering the use of digital trends to break the
traditional leisure facilities through Interactive Architecture. It will be an advantage
of the project in order to stand out against other hotel and resorts. BS- ARCHITECTURE 5-5

2.B. Identifying the Project for the application of the Research Topic

As there is also the insufficiency of upscale lodging industry in Iloilo, the proposed
project, is in relation to the expansion of Rockwell Land to its hotel and leisure
investments within Cebu and Iloilo, as the government and private companies’
team up for the dissemination of tourism, growth and development to the Visayas
and Mindanao Region.
BERCILLA, NIKKI ANGELA L.

Together with the main problem are the sub-problems that also need to be resolved. These
are broken down into architectural, social, and environmental concerns towards the
proposed development; how the proponent would integrate the interactive systems to
make an efficient environment for recreation. — These questions deciphered by inclined
goals and objectives throughout the research, would also go through careful evaluation at
the end of the whole research process.

3. DATA GATHERING

After identifying the input and output of the study, the proponent has embarked on the
collection of raw information from places, people and resources. The overall study should
be credible and backed by solid facts and information. The data to be gathered are
classified into different aspects that would be carefully processed as inputs and serve as
fuel in order to generate an output.

Indicated in the table below are the Data required for the study and as well as its source
and how it will be relevant to the study.

4. DATA ANALYSIS

After the proponent has gathered information from different reliable sources, data
gathered would be anatomized in accordance with how they contribute in the development
of the research such as the analysis of the site, IRR, etc. An initial site selection shall be
implemented, since Rockwell has not yet come up with the site for the Iloilo expansion of
Aruga, the proponent has been able to locate the areas being developed for tourism, which
is at the northern, Iloilo. In the site analysis, many factors are to for consideration
especially regarding the approach. The site’s weakness, strength, opportunity and threats
will also be analyze. Maps, demography, available utilities, soil type, climate, socio-
economic profiles and more are to be analyze to contribute to the study’s feasibility.

The user’s analysis will also happen in this process of research. In this study, the
proponent will need to determine the primary, secondary and tertiary target users of the
project, since users are the most essential variable in any lodging project. Who and what
should be the target number of guests that will patronize the resort-hotel — these part of
the analysis will soon afterwards be the basis of the size of spaces and number of rooms
and villas, and as well as whether the Interactive systems to be integrated within a space
would be appropriate or not.

5. DATA SYNTHESIS

In this process, the proponent needs to understand how to combine all the data analyzed
and proceed to the architectural pre-design practices, understanding guidelines and
formulation of schemes; As well as determine the important environmental and building
systems to utilize. BS- ARCHITECTURE 5-5

The proponent has to seek upon the following references in order to result to an effective
planning and design of a hotel and resort development and conform to regulated
architectural practices:

 P. D. 1096 – National Building Code of the Philippines and Its Implementing Rules
and Regulations
BERCILLA, NIKKI ANGELA L.

 P. D. 1185 – Fire Code of the Philippines and Its Implementing Rules and
Regulations

 P. D. 856 – Code on Sanitation of the Philippines and Its Implementing Rules and

 R. A. 184 – Philippine Electrical Code

 DOT-NAS – Department of Tourism National Accommodation Standards

6. EVALUATION AND OPTIMIZATION

-The proponent has to recapitalize all the necessary information to address the issue on
Resort-hotel facilities, as well as answering the goals and objectives of the study through
explaining the statistical findings related to the purpose of the study.

- The proponent shall explain the main findings as related to the overall purpose of this
study on resort-hotels fused with interactive architecture. She should also summarize
other interesting findings from the results section and highlight the limitations of the
project.

- The proponent is obliged to provide direction and areas for future research. To have a
recommendation about her study so that succeeding researchers may already have a hint
on how to improve or develop the current study.

7. TRANSLATION

Visual and Graphic representation/ translations of the study. After satisfying the scope of
the research, the proponent will now do architectural design solutions, based from her
analysis and findings, through diagrams, schemes and other related presentations in order
to show her intended application of Interactive Systems to the Hotel and Resort.

approach, then enhanced with the appropriate environmental systems. This step-by-step
process are elaborated above, done with a synchronized objective, to refine the study and
achieve the Aruga Interactive as the desired output. Throughout the whole research the
study itself should go through several levels of feedback, which are the task level, which
