SACRAMENTO — The Trump administra-
tion will not immediately give $1 billion it
revoked from California’s high-speed rail
project to another project, according to a
legal agreement reached Wednesday between
the two.
The Federal Railroad Administration
announced last week it was revoking the
money, prompting California to sue on
Tuesday. Beyond the lawsuit, the state
planned to seek a temporary restraining
order halting the federal government from
giving the money to a different rail project.
The new agreement means the state won’t
file the restraining order, but it does not
change the status of the lawsuit.

‘Hunger Games,’ ‘Twilight’

LOS ANGELES — Some of Lionsgate’s most popular film
franchises from “Hunger Games” to “Twilight” will be
brought to life when the studio opens what it calls the
world’s first vertical theme park in China this summer.
Lionsgate Entertainment World will offer several adven-
tures including a virtual reality motorcycle ride based on
“Twilight,” a maximum-security prison breakout like in
“Escape Plan” and a replica of The Capitol lobby from
“Hunger Games,” complete with shops where guests can
fashion themselves in the film’s distinctive couture.
More than 25 rides and virtual reality experiences will
pack a sleek, futuristic looking bean-shaped building that
stands 10 stories high. The theme park, which will also
include attractions based on films such as “Divergent,”
“Now You See Me” and “Gods of Egypt,” is scheduled to
open in July on Hengqin Island located in Zhuhai, China.
“We found a way to create this theme park experience
inside of one box over multiple floors,” said Jenefer
Brown, senior vice president of Global Live and Location
Based Entertainment at Lionsgate.
“We created experiences that are immersive, that tell sto-
ries and are organic to the brands,” she said. “It’s a mix of
all the cutting-edge attractions that you’ll find in entertain-
ment right now.”

over migrant children’s deaths

WASHINGTON — A Democratic lawmaker
on Wednesday blamed the Trump administra-
tion’s border policies for the deaths of
migrant children, an accusation the acting
head of the Homeland Security Department
called “appalling.”
The brouhaha came at a House Homeland
Security Committee hearing on the budget
for the sprawling law enforcement depart-
ment, which has seen major upheaval over
the past two months following a White
House-orchestrated shake-up. Kevin
McAleenan, the head of U.S. Customs and
Border Protection, was named to lead the
department temporarily following the res-
ignation of Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.
At the hearing, Rep. Lauren Underwood,
D-Ill., questioned McAleenan about what he
knew of the psychological problems
migrant children face when they are separat-
ed from their parents. Last year, the admin-
istration separated more than 2,500 chil-
dren from parents as part of a policy to pros-
ecute anyone caught crossing into the

Trump stalks out on Dems, demands end of investigations

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump
abruptly stalked out of a White House meet-
ing with congressional leaders Wednesday,
flatly declaring he would no longer work
with Democrats unless they drop all investi-
gations in the aftermath of the special coun-
sel’s Trump-Russia report.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called it all
“very, very, very strange” and said she was
praying for Trump and the nation. Trump
tweeted his thanks for her prayers but said
he would not proceed down two tracks —
investigation and legislation.
Democrats said his ultimatum seemed
scripted, with signs declaring his inno-
cence already prepared for his outdoor
remarks that followed. Yet Trump’s unease
with congressional oversight and talk of
what he called the “i-word” — impeachment
— now threatens to deprive him of legisla-
tive accomplishments for the remainder of
his term.
The scene playing out live on television
was reminiscent of earlier ones at the White
House, including during the federal govern-
ment shutdown, when Trump walked out on
Democrats. While this standoff could bene-
fit him politically in the short term, with
his tough talk stirring up supporters, it
leaves his trade deals, a new budget and
other goals in jeopardy as he heads into a re-

Chuck Schumer, noting the scheduled topic
of the meeting.
“But you know what? We can’t do it under
these circumstances,” he said he told them.

Back on Capitol Hill, Pelosi said Trump
“just took a pass” on working on national
infrastructure problems.
Flanked by Schumer and other House and
Senate leaders, Pelosi said the Democrats
had gone to the White House “to give this
president the opportunity to have a signa-
ture infrastructure initiative.”
The meeting had been set weeks ago, after
Trump and the Democratic leaders agreed to
talk further about a possible $2 trillion
infrastructure proposal. Democrats have
been working with the president’s daughter
Ivanka, and Trump was due to provide his
ideas on how to pay for it.
But he told them he couldn’t engage on
infrastructure because Pelosi said “some-
thing terrible,” according to an administra-
tion official and another person familiar
with what happened in the room.
Democrats said they doubted he actually
was ever going to put forward a plan.
Schumer — who brought his own 35-page
proposal to the meeting — said that when
Trump “was forced to say how he would pay
for it he had to run away.”
What started as a challenging day for

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon on
Thursday will present plans to the White
House to send up to 10,000 more troops to
the Middle East, in a move to beef up defens-
es against potential Iranian threats, U.S. offi-
cials said Wednesday.
The officials said no final decision has
been made yet, and it’s not clear if the White
House would approve sending all or just some
of the requested forces. Officials said the
move is not in response to any new threat
from Iran, but is aimed at reinforcing security
in the region. They said the troops would be
defensive forces, and the discussions include
additional Patriot missile batteries, more
ships and increased efforts to monitor Iran.
The officials spoke on condition of
anonymity because the plans have not been
formally announced.
Thursday morning’s meeting comes as ten-
sions with Iran continue to simmer, and it
wasn’t clear if a decision would be made dur-
ing the session. Any move to deploy more
forces to the Middle East would signal a shift
for President Donald Trump, who has repeat-
edly emphasized the need to reduce America’s
troop presence in the region.

Stocks fall on mixed earnings, trade tensions

Stocks closed lower on Wall Street
Wednesday, weighed down by a mixed batch
of corporate earnings from big retailers and
lingering uncertainty over the trade spat
between the U.S. and China.
Lowe’s and Nordstrom were among the
biggest decliners in the S&P 500 after the
retailers reported quarterly results that fell
short of Wall Street’s expectations. Target
bucked the trend, surging after its latest
results handily topped analysts’ forecasts.
Chipmakers and other technology stocks
also pulled the market lower, continuing a
pattern of volatile trading as investors react
to developments in the U.S. and China’s
trade dispute. Energy stocks also took loss-
es, falling along with the price of crude oil.
Small company stocks declined more than

SAN JOSE — A long, tough road came to an end with a
hard, tough loss for the Serra baseball team.
After starting 1-4 in West Catholic Athletic League play
this year, Serra bounced back to win its last seven league
games — including earning season split with WCAL champ
Valley Christian — to take second place and advance to the
Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs for the sixth
straight year.
Top-seed Valley Christian (28-4 overall) got even
Wednesday night at Municipal Stadium, though, rallying
for a, 11-1 mercy-rule rule win over No. 5 Serra (20-10) in
the CCS Open Division semifinals.
“We were able to keep our composure,” Serra senior Marek
Palladino said. “There was no time in that game, up until

the bane of Peninsula Athletic
League softball over the years, as
the Monarchs have consistently
handled the best the Bay Division
has to offer in the Central Coast
Section playoffs.
In the early 2010s, it was
Hillsdale who ran up against Mitty
when the Monarchs were in the
their heyday.
Now, it’s Carlmont’s turn. For
the second year in a row, the Scots’
season ended with a loss to the
Monarchs. In 2018, Mitty beat
Carlmont 3-1 in the first round.
Wednesday night, the San Jose
school, seeded eighth, knocked
out the fifth-seeded Scots 12-3 in
the Open Division semifinals at
Los Gatos High School.
“It felt like we were ready to play
early,” said Carlmont head coach
Marco Giuliacci. “But then we lost
our focus. Once the game got out of
hand, we couldn’t recover.”
Carlmont (17-10) jumped out to
a quick 1-0 lead and starting pitch-
er Sanni Karhiaho worked out of a
couple early jams to hold down the
Monarchs early.
Mitty (17-7) would tie it in the
top of the third — which was the
first of three straight scoring
innings for the Monarchs. They
took the lead for good with three
runs in top of the fourth and broke
the game open with six runs in the
fifth. When the dust finally set-
tled, Mitty had collected 17 hits
and left 11 runners on base.
It wasn’t so much the Monarchs
bludgeoned the Scots to death.
They had only three extra-base
hits, all doubles. Instead, Mitty

beat writer Henry Schulman said it
best on KNBR the other day: the
San Francisco Giants aren’t necessarily
good, but they are getting interesting.
After a 3-8 start to the season, the
Giants have gone 18-18 since those
opening couple of weeks and are still
only five games under .500. While it
appears the Los Angeles Dodgers have
finally gotten in gear and are starting to
run away with the National League West
— the Dodgers
hold a 10-game
lead over the
Giants in last
place, but also
have a seven-game
lead over second
place Arizona
going into
Wednesday’s games
— the Giants,
record wise, have
not been complete-
ly buried.
As can be
expected for a team that will scratch and
claw for every win, there have been some
encouraging signs while, at the same
time, the team continues to be madden-
ingly frustrating.
The good? The team literally battles to
the final out. Tuesday night was a prime
example. Down 3-1 in the ninth inning,
the Giants plated one run before Joe
Panik, on a 3-2 count, singled to right to
drive in the tying and game-winning runs
for a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
That has been a a microcosm of their sea-
son: do nothing for the first five or six
innings and then suddenly find offense
over the final two or three. Sometimes,
the Giants have completed the comeback.

Montas, Canha carry A’s to sixth straight win

CLEVELAND — After making stops in
three cities over 10 days on the road,
Frankie Montas and the Oakland Athletics
are headed home.
And they’re bringing the longest active
winning streak in the majors with them.
A’s 7, Cleveland 2
Montas pitched six scoreless innings,
Mark Canha homered and drove in three, and
the Athletics extended their winning streak
to six with a 7-2 victory over the Cleveland
Indians on Wednesday.
Oakland completed a 6-2 road trip and has
won 10 of 14. Those numbers don’t include
a game last weekend that was suspended in
Detroit with the Athletics leading 5-3 in the
seventh.
“I feel like we’re getting there as a team,
but I’m ready to go home,” Montas said,
smiling. “I just want to chill and play with
my son.”
Nick Hundley had three hits, including a
solo homer and two RBIs. Robbie
Grossman also drove in a pair of runs as
Oakland swept the three-game series and
reached the .500 mark for the first time
since April 26.
“This is the type of baseball we expect to
play and this is the team we envisioned
being,” Hundley said. “We’re getting great
pitching and Frankie did a real good job

More playoff disappointment for Sharks

SAN JOSE — Magical come-
backs, dramatic wins and the most
talented roster in San Jose Sharks
history weren’t enough to deliver
the franchise its first Stanley Cup
title.
A team depleted by several key
injuries ended its season with a 5-
1 loss in Game 6 of the Western
Conference final Tuesday night,
turning the drama of Game 7 wins
in the first two rounds into foot-
notes on a season that was ulti-
mately a disappointment.
“We didn’t make it easy for our-
selves the whole playoffs, ”
defenseman Brent Burns said. “We
always battled back. We got
through a lot as a team. A lot of
guys just battled. Just to get this
far a lot of things have to go right.
We battled together but came up
short. It’s crushing to come this
far and not get the job done.”
The goal for the Sharks was clear
ever since they acquired two-time
Norris Trophy winning defense-
man Erik Karlsson from Ottawa
just before the start of the season.
Coach Peter DeBoer told his team
the ingredients were in place for
that elusive first championship in
San Jose. It appeared like that
could be the case after the Sharks
rallied from three goals down in
the third period of Game 7 in the
opening round to beat Vegas in
overtime and followed that up with
another Game 7 win against
Colorado in round two.
But with Karlsson unable to
play the final four periods of the
postseason because of a groin
injury that slowed him since
January, and captain Joe Pavelski
and two-way center Tomas Hertl
also out after taking high hits, the
Sharks didn’t have enough to han-
dle the Blues.
This season ended like so many
others for the Sharks, who have
won more games than any other
team and the second-most playoff
series the past 15 seasons but still
are seeking a first championship.
“They all hurt, ” said center
Logan Couture, who tied a fran-
chise record with 14 goals in the
playoffs. “It doesn’t matter what
the roster is. When you get this far
in the playoffs or you make the
playoffs it hurts. You get in the
playoffs you believe you can
win.”
Here are some other takeaways
from the season:
KARLSSON’S FUTURE
It was a somewhat disappoint-
ing first season in San Jose for
Karlsson and now the question is
whether it will be his only one. He
took about two months to find his
groove and then played at an elite
level for about six weeks. He hurt
his groin in January and was never
the same. He missed 27 of the final
33 regular-season games and was
never completely healed in the
playoffs. He heads into free
agency in July and his decision

will impact what the Sharks will
be able to do with Pavelski and
other key pieces.
JUMBO JOE
One motivating factor for the
Sharks this postseason was deliv-
ering a title for beloved leader Joe
Thornton. The greatest player in
franchise history turns 40 in July
and has not decided whether he
wants to come back for another
season. Thornton dealt with
injuries early in the season, then
had a strong stretch as a third-line
center late before struggling a bit
the final two rounds outside of a
two-goal performance in Game 3
at St. Louis.
“He’s the face, he’s the heartbeat
of the organization,” DeBoer said.
“I think like all the players in that
room, as coaches we’re disap-
pointed for not helping him get
there. Because he gives you every-
thing he’s got and should be
there.”
CAPTAIN PAVELSKI
No player personified the
Sharks’ grueling journey this
spring more than Pavelski. His
postseason started with a puck
that deflected off his face for a
goal. The injuries only got worse
when his helmet violently crashed
to the ice, leading to a bloody con-
cussion in Game 7 against Vegas.
That led to the epic comeback with
four goals on one disputed major
penalty that will go down as the
greatest moment in franchise his-
tory until the team wins a Cup.
Pavelski made a triumphant return
in Game 7 of the second round but
got hurt again in Game 5 against
the Blues. Pavelski turns 35 and
heads into an uncertain summer of
free agency following a 38-goal
season.
STEPPING UP
The biggest positive for San
Jose this season was the emer-
gence of Hertl and Timo Meier as
building blocks for the future. The
25-year-old Hertl was the top-
scoring forward for the Sharks
with 74 points and showed the
capability of manning a top line
as a center. The 22-year-old Meier
had 30 goals and looks like a
long-time fixture as a top-six for-
ward.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Martin Jones was one of the
worst starting goalies in the
league during the regular season in
his first year of a $34.5 million,
six-year contract. He had a career-
low .896 save percentage in the
regular season and was pulled early
in two of his first four postseason
starts. He rebounded and was a key
part of the first-round win over
Vegas but finished the playoffs
with an .898 save percentage.

Raiders brief
Raiders sign free agent tight end Erik Swoope
ALAMEDA — The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent
tight end Erik Swoope.
The Raiders released quarterback Landry Jones on
Wednesday to make room on the 90-man roster.
Swoope had eight catches for 87 yards and three touch-
downs in seven games last season with Indianapolis. He
entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Colts
in 2014 after playing college basketball at Miami. He has
23 career catches for 384 yards and four TDs in 24 games.

Atlanta pummels the Giants

SAN FRANCISCO — Dansby Swanson and Freddie
Freeman hit back-to-back homers in the second inning,
when Atlanta scored six unearned runs after San Francisco
botched a double play, and the surging Braves beat the
Giants 9-2 on Wednesday night.
Austin Riley also homered for the Braves. Max Fried
allowed two runs in six innings for his third straight win
and NL-leading seventh overall. Fried (7-2) also collected
his first career RBI with a bases-loaded fielder’s choice as
part of Atlanta’s big inning.
One day after closer Luke Jackson blew a two-run lead in
the ninth inning of a 4-3 loss, the Braves jumped out to an
early lead and coasted to their ninth victory in 12 games to
pull within 1 1/2 games of first-place Philadelphia in the
NL East.
Swanson sparked the offense with two hits, including his
eighth home run — a three-run drive to center field.
Freeman, who singled in the first, followed with his team-
leading 12th. Freeman has gone deep in five of the last
seven games.
The two home runs came after Giants starter Jeff
Samardzija (2-3) extended the inning with a pair of tosses
that went awry. Samardzija made a throwing error after field-
ing Ozzie Albies’ sharp comebacker with one out. San
Francisco was in a defensive shift, but third baseman Evan
Longoria appeared to stop short of the bag at second when
Samardzija made the throw.
Three batters later, Ronald Acuna Jr. struck out but reached
on a wild pitch by Samardzija. Swanson and Freeman fol-
lowed with the second set of back-to-back home runs for the
Bucks need better bench play
to regain control vs Raptors

MILWAUKEE — The Bucks are back in Milwaukee looking
to regain momentum in the Eastern Conference finals.
Coach Mike Budenholzer believes the play of his bench
will be a major factor in what happens in Game 5 on
Thursday.
The Bucks reserves played so well in the first two games of
the series that the teams’ apparel shop unveiled a “Bench
Mob” T-shirt, celebrating the efforts of Malcolm Brogdon,
Ersan Ilyasova, George Hill and others. Milwaukee’s bench
outscored Toronto’s reserves 130-78 through the first three
games of the series.
But it was the Raptors’ bench, led by forward Norman
Powell’s 18 points, that decided Game 4 — scoring 48
points Tuesday as Toronto evened the series at 2-2.
“They need to play well,” Budenholzer said Wednesday of
his reserves. “I think our whole team, whether it be the bench
or the starters, needs to be better defensively. I think there’s
things offensively where the bench can, you know, just like
the rest of us, we have to execute a little bit better. ... this

Tyler Austin homered for the Giants.
Samardzija had seven strikeouts and gave up four hits and
two walks in six innings.

Serge Ibaka gave the Raptors a lift off the bench Tuesday
with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Fellow Toronto reserve Fred
VanVleet added 13 points and six assists. Their efforts came
as the Raptors got only 19 points from a hobbled Kawhi
Leonard.
Raptors coach Nick Nurse is confident his bench will con-
tinue to play well in Milwaukee because of Toronto’s style of
play.
“That’s really kind of our system, would be that we create
opportunities and everyone’s involved and everybody’s
touching the ball,” he said. “Everybody’s moving and cut-
ting. It’s kind of a free-flowing, open system.
“If we play with the effort we’ve put in the last two games,
actually three of the four games in the series, we are going to
have a really good chance to win,” Nurse said. “We are going
to put ourselves in position to win, and I don’t think it’s any
tricky schemes or fabulous game plans. I think it’s our play-
ers playing their butts off, really.”

While NCAA stalls, game publisher
forms college esports governing body
LOS ANGELES — A month after the NCAA voted to table a
discussion regarding esports, “League of Legends” publisher
Riot Games has launched a governing body for its college and
high school competitive video game activities.
The Riot Scholastic Association of America (RSAA) will fea-
ture a six-member advisory board that oversees all “League of
Legends” college competition, the company announced
Wednesday.
“League of Legends” is the world’s most popular esport, and
more than 80 colleges already had official LoL teams. This sea-
son’s League of Legends College Championship is set to
begin Thursday. Collegiate LoL competition did not previous-
ly have a governing body.
The NCAA board voted April 30 to push back its conversa-
tion regarding esports. The organization has been lukewarm
on competitive gaming, with NCAA President Mark Emmert
citing “hugely misogynistic” and “violent” content among
his concerns in January.
NASCAR to buy International
Speedway, owner of Daytona, Talladega
NASCAR is buying International Speedway in a deal worth
about $2 billion.
International Speedway Corp. owns some of America’s most
well known car racing facilities including the Daytona
International Speedway and in Florida, where the company is
based, and the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama.
The companies said Wednesday that deal is expected to close
this year.
The deal comes a year after reports suggested the France fam-
ily, known as the “first family” of NASCAR racing, was look-
ing to sell it. Reports that have not been specifically addressed
by the current leadership, including Lesa France Kennedy, an
executive vice president and the CEO of International
Speedway Corp.
NASCAR late last year began acquiring the remaining public
stock in International Speedway, which owns a majority of the
NASCAR-sanctioned tracks.

before running out of time. It’s proof that the
team is not simply mailing it in.
The bad? The continued shuffling of players
by new president of baseball operations
Farhan Zaidi. He picks up other teams’ castoffs
and almost immediately inserts them into the
lineup — or designates them for assignment
without even so much as giving the guy an at-
bat. The revolving door in the clubhouse has
everyone looking around, wondering who
these new guys are, before they are quickly
shipped out and replaced by another new face.
Not a good way to develop any kind of conti-
nuity.
I get it — Zaidi is trying to find lightning in
a bottle. Find a player who needed the prover-
bial change of scenery before finding success.
He’s trying to rebuild a farm system that does-
n’t have a lot of immediate talent ready to
make the jump to the big club — at least posi-
tion players. The Joey Barts and Heliot
Ramoses are still at least a year away, but
Shaun Anderson is showing something in his
first two big league starts.
The old adage is you can’t start thinking
about the playoffs until a team gets to even. As
long as the Giants can stay right around the
.500 mark, you’d have to consider this season
a success — although that is all subject to
change as the trade deadline approaches.
But considering the direction this team is

won the 20th hole of the final match on the
course Wednesday, giving Duke a 3-2 victo-
ry over Wake Forest for its seventh NCAA
title in women’s golf.
The longest day at rain-soaked Blessings
Golf Club concluded with three of the five
matches going extra holes.

going, does the front office really want to
grind through an 81-81 season? A lot of fans
are resistant to the changes the new regime is
trying to implement. They’re still hanging on
to the glory days of three World Series titles in
six years, never mind the fact that we are five
years removed from the last title and next year
will be the 10-year anniversary of the 2010
championship season. The more the Giants
win with this team, the harder it will be to
move on.
Unless of course the team manages to move
on from its stars and still finds a way to stay
somewhat competitive. That would be the best
of both worlds.

Two things that I took away from the San
Jose Sharks-St. Louis Blues Western
Conference finals series.
One, the Blues were way bigger and way
more physical than the Sharks. Man for man,
the Blues players appeared to tower over the
Sharks and St. Louis used that to its advantage,
hammering San Jose all over the ice  — both
along the boards and in the middle of the ice.
Two, it looked to me that the Blues were tak-
ing liberties and running at the Sharks when-
ever they could. It worked, too, as San Jose
was without three of the best players, who
missed the final game, Game 6, Tuesday night
with injuries: captain Joe Pavelski, forward
Tomas Hertl and defenseman Erik Karlsson.

Duke sophomore Jaravee Boonchant went
19 holes to beat Augusta National Women’s
Amateur champion Jennifer Kupcho. Siyun
Liu of Wake Forest kept alive her team’s
hopes by winning in 20 holes.
Wang was 2 down with six holes to go
against Letizia Bagnoli, tied the match with
a birdie on the 15th and won on the second
extra hole when Bagnoli pulled her second
shot into the water.
Duke won its first national title since
2007 and now trails Arizona State, which
has eight NCAA titles.

bling up Palladino on a bang-bang play at
first.
“That’s two runs and you still have an
opportunity for an even bigger inning,”
Serra manager Chris Houle said. “And I
thought we were putting good swings. It
just kind of changes the dynamic of an
inning when something like that happens.”
Cymrot got out of the jam unscathed,
though, inducing a double-play grounder off
the following batter Tyler Shaw. Then in the
sixth, with one on and one out, Wall started
another inning-ending double play, back-
handing a one-hop shot off the bat of
Kenison to start a 3-6-3 twin-killing.
Cymrot ultimately went the distance.
After earning a win during the regular sea-
son in Valley’s 10-0 victory over Serra, the
sophomore right-hander worked six
innings to pick up the win Wednesday.
“He was able to pitch out of a couple jams
early,” Diatte said. “Then when we got the
lead … any pitcher, you’ve got to be able to
pitch with the lead or you’re in big trouble.
And I thought he got a little bit of momen-
tum and took off.”
Cymrot breezed through the first inning,
using just 10 pitches to retire the side, and
that low tally included a Dominic Meza shot
through the left side of the infield for a sin-
gle.
Then, the Warriors rocked Serra starting
pitcher Benito Valle-Jhanda, who departed
after facing just five batters, while getting
no outs.
Valle-Jhanda worked exclusively out of
the stretch and still had trouble finding his
release point, opening the bottom of the
first with a four-pitch walk to Valley
Christian leadoff hitter Eddie Park. When he
did get into the strike zone three pitches
later, senior Coleman Brigman made him
pay on a hit-and-run by slamming a double
to left-center past the dive of Serra center
fielder Kannon Clayton to score Park all the
way from first.
After senior Steven Zobac reached on an
infield error to put runners at the corners,
Cymrot followed with some mighty pull
power, banging a double off the left-field
wall to plate Brigman and Zobac. Mark
Fairweather followed with a single to left to
knock Valle-Jhanda out of the game.
“He was fine,” Houle said of the junior
right-hander’s demeanor when he walked off
the mound. “He’s a competitor. It’s just,
they hit some pitches in that inning. And
just knowing this is it, we had to have a lit-
tle bit of a quicker hook than we might have
during the season. He just left a couple

pitches out over the plate … and they’re a
good hitting team.”
Valley Christian didn’t stop there. Facing
Serra reliever Timmy Ghiorso, senior catch-
er Jason Siri connected for a one-out double,
driving home Cymrot and Fairweather to
give the Warriors a 5-0 lead.
In the second, Valley Christian added on.
After a leadoff double by Park, he moved up
on a wild pitch. Then Cymrot lifted a sacri-
fice fly to left to up the lead to 6-0.
Serra got one run back in the top of the
third when Thomas Gould scored on a wild
pitch to the backstop. Valley Christian
answered right back in the bottom of the
third, though, when Stevie Hom drilled a
solo home run to left to put the Warriors up
7-1.
In the fifth, Valley got Ghiorso out of the
game after a leadoff walk to Jack McGrew.
Then facing reliever Milo Cava, the
Warriors baserunners had a field day.
McGrew swiped second, then third, on
Cava’s first two pitches of the evening.
Hom delivered a one-out RBI single. Trevor
Haskins then reached on an error. And
Brigman cashed in with a two-out, two-run
single to put Valley Christian up 10-1.
The kill-shot came in the bottom of the
sixth when Hom — 3 for 4 with a homer and
three RBIs — sent a ball sailing to left with
the bases loaded that one-hopped the wall
but was scored as a single to end it with the
10-run-rule walk-off.
Serra totaled seven hits on the night and
stranded six runners throughout. Palladino
paced the Padres with two hits.
“It’s honestly been a grind,” Palladino
said of the 2019 season. “We lost like 60 to
70 percent of our team last year with sen-
iors. … We weren’t put in any rankings.
Nobody thought really much of us. We were
just able to bounce back after that rough
start to the season. And that’s what Serra’s
all about. Just to have that resiliency. …
That’s how we were able to battle back and
prove some of the people wrong.”
With the win, Valley Christian advances
to face No. 2 Mitty in Saturday’s CCS Open
Division championship game. Mitty elimi-
nated No. 6 San Benito with a 15-5 win in
Wednesday’s earlier semifinal at Municipal
Stadium.
“It’s tough,” Houle said of his parting
words to his team. “There’s only one team
that gets to be the winner at the end. And I
told them that I love them and it’s been a
pleasure working with them. But we were
really proud of their resiliency over the
course of the year. We were 1-4 in league and
5-6 overall, we weren’t even going to be in
CCS at that point. … They turned it around.
And credit to our guys for figuring that out
and going with it all year long. It was great
to be around them, especially that last cou-
ple of months.”

Planning Commission discussed a proposed
interim floor area ratio ordinance and vari-
ous changes to the city’s rules for accessory
dwelling units, also known as in-law units.  Associate Planner William Chui noted
FAR is the ratio between a building’s total
floor area and the size of the lot on which
the building stands. For example, a 2,500-
square-foot home on a 5,000-square-foot lot
has a FAR of 0.50.
A majority of commissioners expressed
support for a FAR limit between .40 to .45
as well as a 17-foot height cap for ADUs,
among other regulations, but ultimately
held off on voting for a recommendation to
the City Council, which has the ultimate
authority over such proposals. The commis-
sion will likely vote on a recommendation
in June or July and in the meantime staff
will compile additional data to inform that
decision.
Between January of 2017 and December of
2018, 98 architectural permits were
processed in Redwood City and 30 of those
homes had FARs of .50 or higher, according
to a staff report. Nine of those projects were
on lots less than 5,000 square feet and
almost all of the homes with FARs above
.50 were approved without neighborhood
concerns or appeals, according to the
report.

when it comes to evaluating building size as
it’s dependent on lot size, and mentioned a
home with a FAR of 72% — the highest of
any Redwood City project in the past two
years — that is not actually as big as one
might assume. That home totaled 1,800
square feet and its FAR was so high because
it sits on a 2,200-square-foot lot.
For some residents, especially those in
the Mt. Carmel neighborhood, the data con-
firms a troubling trend of single-family
homes being demolished and replaced by
oversized ones.
“The data only reinforces what many of us
see happening to our neighborhoods with
our very own eyes: profit-driven developers
bulldozing what has historically been
starter homes or that missing middle and
replacing them with enormous home with
no regard for the neighborhood or neigh-
bors,” said longtime Mt. Carmel resident
Kris Johnson. He claimed that since 2017,
Redwood City has seen 11 homes with an
FAR greater than .60 and two homes with an
FAR over .70.

projects over a certain FAR are subject to

mended the threshold approach, but most
commissioners as well as the residents who
spoke during public comment were interest-
ed in a hard cap FAR between .40 and .45

types of ADUs, under the current rules, can
be as tall as 28 feet, which is the same for

foot cap, but most commissioners
expressed interest in going as low as 17 feet
— a cap that has been adopted in neighbor-

Crestmoor site, but Skelly noted the
city’s single-family home zoning
requirement would not be ideal for
below-market units accommodating
educators. He also noted the site’s rela-
tive isolation as a demerit for its con-

versation at Mills High School next

“These are people who are working,
who are paying taxes,” Senate Budget
Committee chairwoman Holly
Mitchell, D-Los Angeles, said. “That’s
a population we ought not leave
behind.”
Some Republicans have opposed the
proposals, especially since the state is
also considering imposing a tax
penalty on people in the country
legally who refuse to purchase health
insurance. But they likely don’t have
the votes to stop it.
The proposals build on the spending
plan Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom
released earlier this year that would
extend Medi-Cal eligibility to young
adults and double the tax credit to
$1,000 for every family with at least
one child under the age of 6, making
about 3 million households eligible to
receive it.
Newsom’s proposal did not include
school campus.
As a compromise, high school offi-
cials will discuss a proposal to build
new fields at the former Engvall cam-
pus, which the San Bruno Elementary
School District is also examining the
feasibility of selling.
Currently, the San Bruno Golf Center
occupies the former Engvall site, but
elementary officials reserved the right
to terminate the lease prematurely if a
better opportunity is presented.
San Bruno Park Elementary District
officials are amidst an effort to recon-
figure the school system in an attempt
to avoid the constant budget issues
which have long plagued the district.
Attempting to serve the interests of
both school systems, high school
officials are examining building the
fields at Engvall, freeing up an addi-
tional 5 acres for residential develop-
ment at Crestmoor and simultaneously
raising money for the elementary sys-
tem. Once the fields are built, they
would be given to San Bruno city offi-
cials to maintain and operate, accord-
ing to a district report.
Skelly said he favors the vision as a
means of accommodating all the stu-
dents in San Bruno, as well as the
broader community.

“We’ve just got to figure out where
else to get that money from,” Mitchell
said.
The Senate proposal is the first indi-
cation how the Democratic-controlled
legislature will react to Newsom, who
took office in January. The Assembly
plans to finalize its budget proposal
on Friday, which trigger negotiations
with the Newsom administration.
Lawmakers must have a budget
enacted by June 15. If they don’t, state
law requires them to forfeit their
salaries.
The Senate plan does not deviate
much from Newsom’s proposal, adopt-
ing his revenue projections that
include a $21.5 billion surplus.

trustee Linda Lees Dwyer said she
believes the proposal is confusing and

“It feels very rushed. It is not clear to
me why we would use school district
money to buy property from one pub-
lic entity and then put athletic fields
on the property for another public
entity,” she said in an email. “All of
this seems very political to me and I
am concerned that we are not looking
out for the best interest of the students
we serve from the six cities in our dis-
trict.”
Skelly meanwhile said administra-
tors in both school systems as well as
city officials are interested in coming
up with a solution that serves all resi-
dents and students.
“We think we owe it to the communi-
ty to make this stuff work,” he said.

The Senate plan rejects a proposed
new tax on most residential water bills
to pay for drinking water improve-
ments. Instead, they opted to use $150
million of existing tax dollars to help
some struggling public water systems
make improvements.
In 2017, more than 450 public water
systems covering more than half a
million people failed to comply with
safety standards. That number doesn’t
include people who use private wells
or public systems with fewer than 15
connections, which are not regulated
by the state.
Newsom has argued for the tax, say-
ing it would protect the money by
making it harder for lawmakers to
divert the spending elsewhere. But
lawmakers from both parties have
balked at implementing a new tax
while the state has a projected surplus
of $21.5 billion.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City Council of the City of San Bruno, California (the “City”) at its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, held a Public Hearing, waived the first reading and
introduced an ordinance of the City Council of the City of San Bruno, establishing garbage & recycling service rates containing a proposed rate of 4.43%, for FY2019-20, as requested by Recology San
Bruno pursuant to the terms of the Franchise Agreement with the City of San Bruno. If approved, the rate increase will be implemented effective July 1, 2019. Then at it’s regular meeting on Tuesday
May 28, 2019, at the Senior Center, located at 1555 Crystal Springs Road, San Bruno, starting at 7:00 p.m., the City Council will consider waiving the second reading and adopting that ordinance. A
summary of the ordinance is provided below:

the space caught Yoshihiro Sakaguchi’s eye
for its open kitchen and close proximity to
other Japanese restaurants, as well as
Central Park’s Japanese Garden.
With plans to use key ingredients like soy
sauce and other flavorings from Japan,
Yoshihiro Sakaguchi said through a transla-
tor that he’ll also be incorporating ingredi-
ents like chili peppers from Mexico as he
develops the dishes to be served at the San
Mateo restaurant. The 31-year-old said he is
honored to bring his family business to the
United States, but does feel pressure to
ensure its dishes are well-liked by customers
here after the business’ success in Japan.
Much like his relatives, Yoshihiro
Sakaguchi tried his hand in the business
early on by working at an Italian restaurant
after college. Then, when he was 25, he
began work at Mensho, a renowned Tokyo
ramen restaurant that opened a San
Francisco location in 2016.
In opening his own restaurant, Yoshihiro
Sakaguchi said he sometimes wonders how
they will manage so many customers but
also looks forward to creating dishes and
watching diners’ expressions from the open
kitchen as they taste them.
He said for those in the restaurant busi-
ness, it’s not uncommon to see them smell
a tsukemen noodle and try it on its own
before dipping any noodles in the broth so
they can concentrate on the quality of the
noodle. Though every aspect of the dish is
important, Yoshihiro Sakaguchi said the
ratio of the flour and water when making
tsukemen noodles is a focus for him.
For the father-son duo, opening their first
restaurant location in the United States, and
especially the Bay Area, fulfills something
of a dream. Mitsuo Sakaguchi said he began
working with his father Masayasu
Sakaguchi when he was in his 20s, and got
a chance when he was a student to study
abroad in the Bay Area. The experience left

an impression on him that would last
decades and inspire him to open a San
Francisco-themed restaurant in Japan in
recent years. Having grown up in a particu-
larly hilly part of Japan, San Francisco’s
ups and downs reminded him of home, and
years later he encouraged Yoshihiro
Sakaguchi to study abroad and travel in the
Bay Area.
In the hopes of opening its doors on 47 E.
Fourth Ave. in early June, Yoshihiro
Sakaguchi said he has a lot of preparation
ahead but looks forward to seeing customers
try the dishes for the first time. And though
he acknowledged the success other dishes
such as shoyu ramen, served in a soy sauce-
based broth, have had in the family’s other
restaurants, Yoshihiro Sakaguchi knows
where his focus will be as they prepare to
serve diners in San Mateo.
“This is our first Taishoken in America, so
tsukemen is a ‘must’ item that we have to
serve,” he said.

Judge OKs $105M fund for California wildfire survivors

SAN FRANCISCO — Pacific Gas &
Electric Corp. received approval Wednesday
to establish a $105 million fund to help sur-
vivors of recent California wildfires started
by the utility’s equipment.
A federal judge overseeing PG&E’s bank-
ruptcy case approved the utility’s wildfire
assistance program to provide relief for peo-
ple who lost property during the huge fires
in 2017 and 2018.
Lawyers for wildfire victims argued that
PG&E could pay up to $250 million to ade-
quately help their clients and pointed out
that the utility sought last month to pay
$235 million in bonuses for its employees.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Dennis Montali
said he couldn’t under the law impose a larg-
er amount, and said the fund, created volun-

independent third party in five days to
administer the program.
“We are ready, willing and anxious to fund
the $105 million,” Stephen Karotkin, an
attorney for PG&E, told Montali.
The fund is intended to help victims who
are uninsured, still need help with housing
costs or have other urgent needs. Victims
“most in need, including those who are cur-
rently without adequate shelter,” would be
prioritized, the utility said. The fund’s
administration expenses will be capped at
$5 million. PG&E said it will draw the entire
$105 million from its cash reserves.
PG&E said it will not seek any rate
increases to pay for the fund.
The company filed for bankruptcy protec-
tion in January, saying that under California
law it faced up to $30 billion in wildfire lia-
bilities.
State fire investigators have determined
that PG&E equipment caused 18 wildfires in
2017. Last week, state fire officials
announced PG&E power lines sparked the
Nov. 8 fire that killed 85 people and nearly
destroyed the town of Paradise in the Sierra
Nevada foothills.
