GSA-2B
Revision 1.12 July 2006

1. Introduction
The GSA-2B is a two-zone conventional fire detection and extinguishing control panel.
Two Initiating Device Circuits (IDC) monitor fire indication from various fire detectors and
manual push-buttons. The IDC circuit is two-wire and is compatible with all Telefire's
conventional push-buttons, detectors and / or detectors that were approved by Telefire
as compatible with the GSA-2B. All inputs and outputs (with the exception of Evacuate)
are supervised and identify open-circuits, shorts, alarm, and normal operation. Status is
indicated on the control panel.
The automatic extinguishing unit includes an adjustable extinguishing delay;
extinguishing override switch that allows the cancellation of extinguishing activation, or
preventing extinguishing activation during maintenance.
The extinguishing output allows the use of gas-release solenoid, electric matches, and
gas cartridge actuators. The low supervision current enables a large variety of
extinguishing devices.
The control panel's outputs include horn, extinguishing, trouble relay, alarm relay,
evacuation, and connector for a TFC-3 relay expansion module.
Figure 1 GSA-2B System with additional extinguishing and relays

2. Alarms
Upon detecting an alarm in one of the zones the control panel performs the following
actions:
• Turn on general ALARM LED and the specific zone's ALARM LED
• Activation of the Horn output
• Activation of the Alarm relay
• Activating relay RL3 in the TFC-3 relay expansion module (if connected)
• Turning OPERATE LED off
Pressing the SOUND OFF button will stop the alarm sounder and relay RL3 in the TFC-3
relay module, if connected.
Upon receipt of a second alarm (i.e., both zones in alarm at the same time) the control
panel performs the following:
• Turns on the second zone Alarm LED.
• Re-activates Horn output
• Activates Evacuation output

– Page 1 –
GSA-2B
Revision 1.12 July 2006

• Activates Extinguishing output

• Re-activates RL3 on the TFC-3 module (if connected)
• Activates relays RL1 and RL2 on the TFC-3 module (if connected)
Extinguishing output, trouble and alarm relays, and RL1 and RL2 on the optional TFC-3
module are unaffected by SOUND OFF.
Pressing the RESET button will reset the alarm status.

3. Automatic Extinguishing
The extinguishing process starts upon receiving an alarm from both zones, and the
extinguishing delay mechanism starts its countdown. After the delay period the
extinguishing output is activated for roughly 50 seconds. The extinguishing process is
halted if the EXTING INHIBIT button is pressed prior to extinguishing activation. After
activation of the extinguishing the EXTING indicator turns on and stays lit even after
resetting the control panel to indicate that extinguishing was activated and the gas
cylinder is empty. To reset the EXTING indication power the control panel off for about 5
seconds by disconnecting both AC and batteries. Only qualified technicians should
power the control panel off.

4. Trouble Events
During normal operation the AC POWER (meaning AC input present), and OPERATE
(meaning system OK) LEDs are on. In case of a trouble event the OPERATE LED will
turn off, the SYSTEM Trouble LED will turn on, the appropriate trouble indicator will turn
on, and the trouble relay will be activated. At the same time the integral trouble buzzer
will sound, and the relevant trouble indicating LED will be turned on. Pressing the
SOUND OFF button will silence the buzzer. An additional trouble event that occurs while
Sound Off is activated will not re-activate the trouble buzzer.
Upon loss of AC power the AC POWER and OPERATE LEDs are turned off the SYSTEM
TROUBLE LED is turned on, and the trouble buzzer sounds.
Resolving the trouble event will cancel the relevant audio-visual indication.
The GSA-2B control panel is "floating" – the positive and negative voltages are not
grounded.
The ground fault detection system enables early detection of problems in the IDC wiring,
water leakage into one of the devices or wiring, electrolyte leakage from a faulty battery,
etc. In this case the SYSTEM LED will turn on, the trouble buzzer will sound, and GF+ or
GF- LED on the (lower) power supply board will turn on, indicating whether the leak is in
the positive (GF+) or negative (GF-) wires.

6.4. Batteries
The system uses two serially-connected sealed lead-acid batteries (24V total) and
capacity of 1.2 – 5 AH. Battery capacity shall be calculated according to the system's
requirements and local applicable codes and regulations.
The GSA-2B control panel can include batteries up to 13 (W) by 6 (D) by 8 (H) cm.
To measure battery voltage, connect a voltmeter to the battery terminals (see Figure 10
on page 11). The measured voltage should be 25.5 – 27V. Charging voltage is set
automatically by the power supply and is between 5 – 500 mA.

7. General Installation Instructions

7.1. Electric Connections
Connect the control panel’s AC input line to a dedicated circuit breaker that is not shared
by other appliances or equipment. Connect the building ground to the control panel
chassis by using the marked grounding terminal.
Ensure that the electric wiring is according to local standards and regulations. Maximum
loop resistance is 30 Ohm.
Ensure that the total current draw from the control panels (e.g., horns, extinguishing
cylinder, dialer, etc.,) will not exceed 1 A.
Disconnect all power (mains and battery) to the control panels prior to connecting
devices to the system. Changing / installing extinguishing activation unit will be done
only after ensuring that the system is in quiescence state (no push-buttons, detectors,
etc., are in alarm).

7.2. Extinguishing Delay Adjustments

Extinguishing delay can be adjusted between 5 to 90 seconds.
Extinguisher delay adjustment is done by removing the front panel (disconnect all power
sources to the control panel prior to removing the front panel) and adjusting the
potentiometer that is located next to the buzzer. Increase delay by turning the
potentiometer clockwise.
Note
i UL 864 limits maximum delay to 60 seconds. Do not increase extinguishing delay
beyond this value.

7.3. Marking
Mark on a drawing a list of protected premises and the instructions for immediate actions
that should be taken by the operator.
Write the zone names on the front panel in the space provided.
Write the name and telephone numbers of the installer company (see "GSA-2B
Instructions for Immediate Action" on the last page of this manual).

7.4. Tests
Perform a functional test every six months or as specified by local regulations.
The test should be performed only by a technician or a company approved by Telefire.

7.4.1. Weekly Test

Warning
! Pressing the TEST button will activate the Alarm and Trouble relays and the
three relays in the TFC-3 expansion module, if installed.
Disconnect wire 4 (see Figure 16 on page 13) in the TFC-3 cable to prevent
relay activation while pressing the TEST button.
Conduct the test by pressing the TEST button. Expected result – all LEDs are on, the
internal buzzer, sounders, and all outputs (including trouble and alarm relays, and the
optional TFC-3 relay module) operate, with the exception of automatic extinguishing
output.
Disconnect the control panel's AC input and repeat the test.
Note
i Ensure that you reconnect AC power input after the test.

After testing and reconnecting AC power ensure that the Operate LED (green) is on and
there is no battery trouble indication. If there is a battery trouble indication – test the
batteries as per Measuring Battery Voltage and Charging Current on page 11. Replace
faulty batteries as necessary.

8. Installation
Mount the enclosure-back on a clean firm surface using 4 screws. Use the GSA-2B's
mounting screw-holes as shown by the figure below.
Connect the electric wiring through the 20 mm knockout holes to avoid contact between
the wires and the chassis.

9. Expansion Relays
System expansion can be achieved via the addition of the optional TFC-3 Relay Module.
This module includes three relays with a single changeover contact for each relay.
Please refer to Figure 16 on page 13.
The TFC-3 module connects to the GSA-2B's main board via a cable connected to the
AUX connector. It activates one relay (RL3) upon alarm from either of the zones, and
two relays (RL1 and RL2) when both zones are in alarm at the same time.

Warning

Please refer to the TFC-3 technical manual for additional information.

Note
i Please contact Telefire for consultation on additional activations if needed

10. Connecting Automatic Extinguishers

The GSA-2B fire alarm control panel includes an output that is intended for activation of
extinguishing devices. The Extinguishing output is protected by fuse F2 on the power
supply board (see Figure 9 on page 13) and supervised for line continuity (short and
open line) of the 5.1K EOL and/or the device's internal resistance).
The extinguishing output operates as level activation, a very low voltage for line
supervision, and full voltage (24V) during activation.
When reversed polarity activation is required use a TLA-2 adapter that will change a
level activation output to reverse polarity (see Figure 3 on page 8). Ensure that the
required activation current is within specification of both the control panel's output and
the TLA-2 module.
Warning
! Connect only extinguishing devices that were approved by Telefire.
Use the TLA-2/Life to connect extinguishing gas cylinders.
Use the TLA-3K adapter to connect aerosol extinguishers.
