OBJECTIVE

 To calibrate the Conventional Masses in the capacity ranges 1 mg to 1 kg, OIML class F2.

STANDARD EQUIPMENT
 Reference or standard weights traceable calibrated OIML class F1.

SAMPLE DESCRIPTION
 Weights, Weight Box.
 Electronic Balance.

PREPARATION
 Verify that the UUC (Unit under Calibration) and standards weights clean and free from obvious
damage that would impair its operation.
 Check the instrument by comparing between its nameplate details and specification, if
available.
 Ensure that the UUC and the Standards has been acclimatized in accordance to OIML regulation
R 111(room temperature ± 1,5 °C per hour, max ± 2 °C per 12 hours) thermal stabilization
see B.4.3.1
 Ensure to select the balance based on the Test Weights. The metrological characteristics of the
weighing instrument used should be known from earlier measurements and its resolution,
linearity, repeatability and eccentricity should be such that the required uncertainty can be
reached.
 The reference weight should generally be of a higher class of accuracy than the weight to be
calibrated. In the calibration of weights of class E1, the reference weight should have similar
or better metrological characteristics (magnetic properties, surface roughness) than the
weight to be calibrated.

 If a balance is used in a shop floor environment it should not be assessed in a temperature

controlled laboratory environment. See above

 Check that the air bubble is in the centre of the level and if necessary correct by levelling feet.
 Use gloves to handle the both weights and use tweezers for lower weights during the
calibration.

CALIBRATION PROCEDURE

Compare unknown weight T with reference weight R using a single so-called

ABBA weighing, which in this case is RTTR, as follows:
 Place weight R on the balance pan and record the balance reading (denoted by r1) when the
balance indication has stabilised.
 Remove R and replace it with weight T and record the balance reading t1 when the balance
indication has stabilised.
 Remove T and return it to the balance pan as though it were a different weight, record
balance reading t2.
 Remove T and replace it with R, record balance reading r2.
 Repeat the Above all steps for 6 times as per OIML R-111- B.5.3.3.2(a).
 Try to keep the same time interval between each of the four loadings. From the balance
readings and get the difference of the both weights ∆m from the below Equation.
∆m = mct – mcs
mct - Average of Test Mass.
mcs - Average of Standard Mass.
 Use this value of ∆m in (1) to calculate m. The ABBA method compensates for drift in the
balance zero so you do not need to tare the balance before loading each weight.

CALCULATION

 While calibration note down readings in the Worksheet.

 Apply the necessary correction and tabulate the result in Worksheet.
 For calculating the uncertainty, follow the procedure, as described in “Measurement
Uncertainty and Confidence Level” Procedure no. QAP/ABHATH-17.
 Extract the result of the uncertainty calculated and compiled it into the certificate and
calibration records.
 Records of the calibration shall be compiled into the job file including all calibration hand
written records.

 While using the standard weights as a master, the following contributions to be included in
the uncertainty calculation.
a. Uncertainty due to the Standard mass from Calibration certificate (Umcs)
b. Uncertainty due to mass differences measurement(u∆m)
c. Uncertainty due to air bouyancy ( ub )
d. Uncertainty due to the resolution of the Balance(uBres)
e. Uncertainty due to the drift of masses (uMd)
f. Uncertainty Due to the Magnetism(uM)

MODEL EQUATION
 With the definition of the calibration of Conventional masses for the following
extended mathematical model or model equation in accordance to OIML –R111

mct = mcs (1 + ( ρa – ρ0 ) (1/ ρt - 1/ ρs) ) + ∆m + Bres

 The following values are used in the model equation.

mct conventional test mass

mcs conventional standard mass
ρa air density
ρ0 standard air density of 1.2 kg/m3
ρt density of the test mass.
Ρs density of the standard mass.
∆m difference between standard and test mass.
Bres Resolution of the test balance.

Estimation of the Measurement Uncertainty

 The standard uncertainty of the test mass umct is reached according to GUM by
producing the derivatives of the model equation in respect to the variables multiplied
by the uncertainties of the variables squared, added and square rooted.

umct = √(umcs 2 + u∆m 2 + ub 2 + uBres 2 + uMd + uM)

The standard uncertainties are:

umcs: the Standard uncertainty of the standard mass , the expanded uncertainty is
indicated on the calibration certificate.
umcs = Umcs/2
u∆m: the standard uncertainty of the mass differences measurement.
u∆m = s∆m /√n (standard deviation of the mass difference
measurement divided by √n.)
uρa : the standard uncertainty of the air buoyancy, is unknown should
be estimated OIML –R111-C.6.3.5 and C.6.3.6
ub = ρa /√3
uBres: the standard uncertainty of the resolution of test balance.
uBres = Bres /2√3
uMd: Uncertainty due to the Drift of reference weight
uMd= Md/√3
uM: Uncertainty due to the Magnetism.
uM = M/ √3
To gain the expanded uncertainty for the deviation or error of the balance indication the standard
uncertainty is multiplied by k = 2.
Umct = k umct
