E. Learning Materials
1 Arithmetic sequences (𝑈𝑛 )
A sequences 𝑈1 , 𝑈2 , 𝑈3 , … , 𝑈𝑛−1 , 𝑈𝑛 can called arithmetic sequence if the
difference between two consecutive term is always constan. That different is
denoted by “b”. Suppose “a” declares the first term, “n” declares many terms.
For example: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, . . .

Then the formula terms n that sequences arithmatika is:

𝑈𝑛 = 𝑎 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑏

2 Arithmetic Series (𝑆𝑛 )

Arithmetic series is a series which is a sequential addition of arithmetic sequence
terms.
The formula of arithmetic series is:

𝑛 𝑛
𝑆𝑛 = (𝑎 + 𝑈𝑛 ) 𝑎𝑡𝑎𝑢 𝑆𝑛 = [2𝑎 + (𝑛 − 𝑏)𝑏]
2 2

With:
a= first term = 𝑈1
b= different between 2 terms

From two formulas above, relation 𝑈𝑛 and 𝑆𝑛 is

𝑈𝑛 = 𝑆𝑛 − 𝑆𝑛−1
For n odd, then middle term arithmetic sequence (𝑈𝑡 ) formulated with:
1
𝑈𝑡 = 2 (𝑎 + 𝑈𝑛 )

the material in outline.
 The teacher instructs one student
to describe about arithmetic
sequence and series.
 The teacher explain the material
of aritmetic sequence and series.
 The teacher give problems
example about arithmetic
sequence and series.
Determine the terms 25𝑡ℎ of the
arithmetic series: 1,3,5,7,. . .?
Answer:
Known:
The series: 1,3,5,7, . . .
𝑎=1
𝑏 =3−1= 5−3= 7−5
=2
𝑛 = 25

𝑈25 = 𝑎 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑏
𝑈25 = 1 + (25 − 1)2
𝑈25 = 1 + (24)2
𝑈25 = 1 + 48
𝑈25 = 49
So, the value of the 𝑈25 is 49.
 The teacher asks about
understanding the material that
has been delivered.
b. Elaboration:
 The teacher give assigment to
the students.
 After working the assigment is
complete, the teacher instruct
one student to explain the
answer in the board.
 Another students pay attention
and are given the opportunity to
give a response or solution if the
answer false.
 The teacher asks if there are
difficulties in doing the
assigment.
c. Confirmation
 The teacher strengthens the
results of the presentation and Homework
responds the questions.
 The teacher give homework for
students.
 The teacher asks collect that
home work next meeting.
3 Closing: 5
 The teacher and the students minutes
improve to go home.
 Before to go home the teacher
and the students pray together

1. Students can determine a. It is known that an
the term n arithmetic arithmetic sequence: 2, 5,
sequence using n 8, 11, 14, . . . 𝑈𝑛 .
formulas. Determine the 𝑛𝑡ℎ term
formula in the arithmetic
sequence!
b. It is known that 𝑈2 +
𝑈4 = 12 and𝑈3 + 𝑈5 =
16, then the 7𝑡ℎ term of
the sequence is?

2. Determine the number a. Arithmetic series 17, 20,

of n terms of an 23, 26, ... The number of
arithmetic series using the first thirty terms of the
n formulas. series is
b. The arithmetic sequence
is known as 3𝑟𝑑 = 14 and
7𝑡ℎ = 26. The first 18
terms are?

Discussion:
1. a. Known:
The series: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, … , 𝑈𝑛
𝑎=2
𝑏=3
Question: formula 𝑈𝑛 ?
𝑈𝑛 = 𝑎 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑏
𝑈𝑛 = 2 + (𝑛 − 1)3
𝑈𝑛 = 3𝑛 − 1

So, formula 𝑈𝑛 is 𝑈𝑛 = 3𝑛 − 1.

b. From the addition of2𝑛𝑑 and 4𝑡ℎ terms:

(1) 𝑈2 + 𝑈4 = 12
⇒ (a + b) + (a + 3b) = 12
⇒ 2 a + 4b = 12
⇒ a + 2b = 6

From the addition of the 3𝑟𝑑 and5𝑡ℎ terms:

(2) 𝑈3 + 𝑈5 = 16
⇒ (a + 2b) + (a + 4b) = 16
⇒ 2a + 6b = 16
⇒ a + 3b = 8

The next step, we will make the same substitution 1 to equation 2:

a + 2b = 6
a = 6 - 2b ....substitution to equation (2)

Equation (2):
a + 3b = 8
⇒ 6 - 2b + 3b = 8
⇒6+b=8
⇒b=2

Because b = 2, then a = 6 - 2 (2) = 6 - 4 = 2.

So, the first term of the sequence is 2 and the 7th term of the arithmetic
sequence is:
𝑈7 = a + 6b
𝑈7 = 2 + 6 (2)
𝑈7 = 14

2. a. Known:
a = 17
Different = b = U2-U1 = 20-17 = 3
Amount of 30 first term = S30
𝑛
𝑆𝑛 = 2 (2𝑎 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑏)
30
𝑆30 = (2.17 + (30 − 1)3)
2

= 15 (34 + 29.3)
= 15 (34 + 87)
= 15.121
= 1,815

b. Known:
𝑈3 = 14
a + (3-1) b = 14
a + 2b = 14 ...... (first equation)

𝑈7 = 26
a + (7-1) b = 26
a + 6b = 26 .... (equation two)

Next equation one and the two equations we subtract:

Then we take the first equation to find the value of a:

a + 2b = 14 (we change b with 3, because the result is b = 3)
a + 2 (3) = 14
a+6 = 14
a = 14-6
a =8
Next we enter a = 8 and b = 3 in the formula for the number of terms or
𝑆𝑛 to find the number of the first 18 terms:
𝑛
𝑆𝑛 = 2 (2𝑎 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑏)
18
𝑆18 = (2.8 + (18 − 1)3)
2
= 9 (16 + 17.3)
= 9 (16 + 51)
= 9. 67
= 603.
