INTRODUCTION TO FSAE

HISTORY OF FSAE

The formula SAE competition provides an opportunity for college students to experience engineering
hands on. For the competition, the team is assigned the task to design a prototype of a formula racecar
which, hypothetically, could be a potential production vehicle for use by the weekend autocross racer.

The fabrication of the racecar will facilitate the use of creativity and skills obtained by the
undergraduate and graduate students involved in the project. This project will also challenge skills
outside of engineering knowledge; the team will need to budget time and money as well as develop a
means of raising money through fundraising and sponsorship. Through the use of all of the
aforementioned skills, the engineering team will gain substantial “real-world” practice that will aid them
in future classes as well as careers.

FSAE COMPETITION

The team will compete in the competition that takes place in California in June of 2011. This competition
is only one of 9 different competitions held on 5 different continents around the world. Our team will
have the opportunity to compete against several teams that have competed in past events.

The vehicle will be scored in various categories ranging from Marketing Presentation to Track
Performance with a maximum possible score of 1000 points. A detailed explanation of all of the
competition events and their respective point scales follow:

Static Events

Engineering presentation-students are asked questions about design theories and engineering
principles used in the design of the car
Cost Analysis-the detailed bill of materials for the racecar is submitted and judged
Marketing Presentation-the team must market the car to the potential, hypothetical
manufacturer

Dynamic Events

Endurance-the car must endure a 22 kilometer (closed-course)race with one driver change in
the middle
Autocross-the fastest time of four runs of the course will be judged. The course will contain
various corners and straightaways that will be run in a single lap.
Fuel Economy-the fuel economy of the car is calculated based on performance in the 22km run.
Acceleration-the fastest time in which the car can drive through 75 meters from a dead start
Skid-pad-cornering ability is judged based on how quickly the car can drive in a figure eight
THE UT TYLER CHAPTER OF SAE
CHARTER CHAPTER

Our current team faces many challenges being the first chapter of SAE at The University of Texas at
Tyler. We have to develop guidelines to base our projections of money needed, time scheduling, and
other project needs from scratch. We have resorted to researching the approach that other various
universities have taken in previous years in regards to these items.

Our team consists of currently enrolled undergraduates and graduates most of which are enrolled in the
engineering program at UT Tyler.

DIVISION OF DUTIES

In order to ensure that the needed amount of time and energy are expended in designing, fabricating,
and testing each aspect of the racecar, the team will be divided into the groups based on individual skill
levels and proficiency. For example, some team members will focus on designing and building the
chassis, while other team members will perfect their strategies for cockpit and controls duties.

Our team has officers to oversee the basic functions of our team just like in any other student
organization. These officers will be named along with their contact information at the end of this packet.

OUR CAR

Engine

The engine that our team is using is a 600cc motor taken

from a Honda CBR 600rr street bike. Certain parts of the
motor (pictured right) will be modified in order to maximize
performance in the various categories of the competition.

Chassis

The team will design a chassis system that is both reliable

and efficient; or more specifically, sturdy and lightweight.

Suspension

The suspension system for the car will be built from the
ground up.

Other Components

The team will also build many other components of the car,
such as the body, driver cabin, etc.

November, critical design review in late November -early December, Roll Out of the car in late March –
early April, and competition in California in June. The deadlines for these events will become more
specific as the project progresses.
FSAE SPONSORSHIP BENEFITS
BENEFITS TO SPONSORS

Tax Deductible

All donations are 100% tax deductible because our branch

uses the SAE International tax ID (501C3) which classifies
our team as a non-profit organization.

Networking

Sponsors will be recognized at the unveiling of the car and

this will be a great opportunity to meet other sponsors
thus unveiling potential future business opportunities.

Familiarization

Students and other participants in the competition will

have a chance to become familiar with your company
and/or product.

Recognition

The team will recognize your contributions at

competitions, in literature about the project, and on any
websites that the team maintains.

SPONSORSHIP OPORTUNITIES

Monetary Donations

Donations are extremely useful for travel expenses,

registration expenses, and any other costs that are
not associated with a specific part or product. They
also help purchase any parts or materials that have
not been donated.

Materials and/or Parts

The car will require an extremely large range of

parts and materials that some sponsors can donate
rather than, or in addition to monetary donations.
SPONSORSHIP LEVELS
All levels of sponsorship include the benefits of the levels below it.
