“Patterns”

- Designing and making a pattern is the first step in making a sand casting
casting.
- The cavity in the sand is formed by using a pattern (an approximate
approximate duplicate of the real
part).
► Consideration must be given to:

• Type of casting process used.

used
• Metal being cast.
• Molding technique used.
used

► Pattern materials can be:

• Wood.
• Metal.
• Plastics.
• Wax.

► Types of patterns:

1- Single Piece Pattern.

2- Split pattern.
3- Follow board pattern
pattern.
4- Cope and drag pattern.
pattern
5- Match plate pattern.
pattern
6- Loose-piece
piece pattern.
pattern
7- Sweep pattern.
8- Skeleton pattern.

► Pattern allowances:

• Shrinkage allowance.

• Machining allowance.

• Distortion allowance.

Fig (6) Pattern allowances

→ Shrinkage Allowance:

• Patternmakers account for solidification shrinkage and thermal contraction by

making mold cavity oversized

• Amount by which mold is made larger relative to final casting size is called
pattern shrinkage allowance

• Casting dimensions are expressed linearly, so allowances are applied accordingly
