ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I will start by thanking the ALMIGHTY GOD for His wonderful grace
and love. He has always been by my side and has led me successfully through
all difficulties, Dr. LUKONG Kenneth the director of H.T.T.T.C Bambili.

It’s been a real privilege to do my Teaching Practice internship in the


Government Technical High School (G.T.H.S) Kumbo. My experience here has
been full of opportunities to learn from a staff of teachers with a good
knowledge of electronics and a welcoming student body. I would like to directly
thank Mr AKOKO ESAU AKO, Vice Principal Commercial, Mr FORBANG
Nixon Soh, Vice Principal Industrial and most especially the principal of
G.T.H.S Kumbo, Mr SEKA SAMUEL GAMSI who made it possible for the
teaching practice exercise to take place in their institution.

I would like to thank my supervisor Mr. NGOUNE Jean-Paul for his


invaluable guidance throughout my internship. His many years of teaching
experience allowed him to focus in on the critical and interesting issues of any
problem. I am very grateful to him for all the assistance he gave to me; through
the setting at my disposal of the documents, information, and especially for
his patience towards me.

I am very grateful to all the teachers of the G.T.H.S Kumbo, especially


those of the department of Electronics who did their best to make our stay
pleasant through a permanent collaboration and a teaching help.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Teaching practice offers opportunities for student-teachers to acquire


practical experience of directing the learning of a group of learners over a
specific period of time and to participate actively in the various activities
involved in the actual teaching situations. It is a period which provides the
student-teachers the opportunity and guidance in a well organized school
setting for them to develop in themselves: professional competences, personal
characteristics, understanding, knowledge and the desired skills for teaching
as teachers. (Anja and Fonche 2006)

During the teaching practice exercise, the student-teachers are


expected to have the ability to develop and use educational materials wisely,
plan suitable general and individual lesson plan and write on the chalk board
accurately. They are also expected to show proof of knowledge and
understanding of child developmental stages and their individual differences.

Teaching practice is carried out by Student Teachers in Cooperating


schools. Cooperating Schools are schools which allow student teachers to use
their facilities as well as their students for the purpose of practice (Ejiogu and
Ajeyalemi, 1987)

Internship course is the time set aside by the training school for the
teaching practice exercise. The course of internship was two months that is,
from the 30th of January to the 23th of March 2012.

CHAPTER I: PRESENTATION OF
COOPERATING SCHOOL
I.1 PRESENTATION OF G.T.H.S KUMBO
The Cooperating School where I did my Teaching Practice was G.T.H.S
KUMBO. This institution was created in 1981 as a technical college but went
operational in 1995. G.T.H.S KUMBO is situated at mile 40 on the BUI –
KUMBO Highway. The school is about 4 miles away from KUMBO Central
town. Mr SEKA SAMUEL GAMSI is the present principal of GTHS KUMBO, Mr
AKOKO ESAU AKO, Vice Principal of Commercial section, and Mr FORBANG
NIXON SOH the Vice Principal of Industrial section. The teaching staff is
constituted of about 69 teachers;

G.T.H.S Kumbo is a mixed 1st and 2nd cycle school with a total enrolment
of about 1600 students of which about 900 are in the second cycle. It offers a
total of 10 options namely; Electronics, Electrical Technology, Air Conditioning
and Refrigeration, Civil Engineering, Wood Work, Plumbing, Food and
Nutrition, Clothing Industry, Secretariat and Accounting.

In terms of infrastructure, G.T.H.S Kumbo has a workshop build by the


government used for Electrical Technology, library which a rich book store,
infirmary, about three computer labs , one toilet for the staff and about six
toilets for students.

The school trains students to seat for the following end of course
examinations; CAP, GCE Ordinary Level in Technical subjects, Probatoire
Technique in Lower sixth, Baccalaureat Technique and G.C.E Advanced Level
in Technical subjects in Upper sixth.

GTHS Kumbo offers simulating learning environment with many extra


curricular facilities and a committed staff to help the students achieve their
educational ambitions.

Students admitted into the 1st year of the first cycle are those who have
passed the First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) and passed the Common
Entrance Examination which is organised each year to select students into
Orientation One.

Students who have obtained a pass in the CAP or GCE Ordinary Level
for either science or arts subjects with Economics and Mathematics are
deemed qualified to seat for the entrance examination into the second cycle
(Form 5). Successful students in the entrance examination are admitted in
one of the following options:

I.3 MEETING WITH THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION


We were officially received in G.T.H.S Kumbo on the 30th of January
2012. We had a meeting with the school administration that started at 10 am
and was chaired by the vice principal commercial who welcomed the student-
teachers from ENSET BAMBILI into his institution. He introduced his close
collaborators that are the discipline masters and heads of departments.

After the self introduction, some functions of the school administration


were given and explained to us. We were also given some guides on almost all
the domain of school life and our profession:

- The vice principal commercial talked to us about Pedagogy in general.


- The chief of works guided us on how we could carry out our various
workshop lessons and practical.

When giving the closing remarks of the meeting the vice Principal
thanked to us all for our participation and our sense of seriousness because
all the student teachers were present. He wished us a nice stay throughout
our training period in the school and that we should keep the school
administration informed in case of any obstacle. After the meeting, we were
directed to meet our various heads of departments.

I.4 MEETING WITH THE HEAD OF ELECTRONICS DEPARTMENT

We had a brief meeting with the teachers of the Electronics department.


This meeting was chaired by the head of department, Mr. NGOUNE Jean Paul
who welcomed us in the department and presented a list of all speciality
subjects. At the end of the meeting we were each attributed a number of
subjects and our individual time table was drawn and presented to the vice
principal for certification. I was given two classes to teach, which are
Electrical, Digital and Industrial Circuits in Form 6 (F3 6), and Power

Electronics in Upper Sixth (F3-7). My Individual Time Table is presented


in Appendix A.

CHAPTER II: PEDAGOGIC AND


EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
II.1. FIRST WEEK (from 30th to 6th of February 2012)

After the meeting with the school administration on Monday the 30th of
January we had to start the teaching-practice exercise by observing and
evaluating our Cooperating teachers when they taught. My observation period
started on Tuesday the 31th of January and went through till Friday the 3th of
February.

II.1.1 OBSERVATION PHASE

To observe means to watch some one perform a particular task.


Observation in this context was actually a period that a student teacher had
to sit at the back of the class, watch or observe keenly what his or her
Cooperating teacher does. The student teacher could even observe another
student teacher teaching. During this period, student teachers gathered a lot
of techniques or methods of teaching from the classroom teachers who are
already experienced in the field of teaching.

We learnt much during this phase and some important points which
were gathered are stated below.

 The quality of the teacher’s voice. It should be high enough to attract


the attention of all the students.
 The planning of the chalk board. It should be divided into three main
sections, the first for the sub topics, the second for the date, main topic,

the development of lesson, exercises, and diagrams and the third for
writing down difficult words.
 How to introduce a lesson based on the knowledge got from the previous
lesson.
 The relationship between the teachers and the students which created
a social atmosphere favorable for studies.
 The use of simple and clear language for the transmission of knowledge
to ease the comprehension of learners.
 The good mastery of the lesson to be taught which places the teacher in
authority over the students thus easing the transmission of knowledge
and enabling a good classroom management.
 Walking round the classroom verifying what the students are doing and
whether they are actually following the lesson.
 To always call the students by their names and never allow students to
answer a question in an uncontrolled manner.
 We also learnt how to fill the daily records book and how to prepare our
lesson notes.

II.2. SECOND WEEK (From 6th to 13th of February 2012)

This was the youth week and no classes were held during this period.
The whole week was filled with youth week activities such as marching
practice, sporting activities and club activities.

II.3. THIRD WEEK (From 13th to 20th of February 2012)

I started my teaching experience in F36 (Lower Sixth Electrotechnics) at


12:40 pm on Tuesday with my cooperating teacher sitting behind at the back
of classroom and observing me while I taught. The topic given to me by the
cooperating teacher was bipolar transistor and field effect transistor.

At the end of the lesson I had a brief meeting with my cooperating


teacher who made some comments about my teaching. He mostly commented
on the use of the chalk board and the class management techniques which I
had to improve.

On Friday the 17th of February at 8:00 am I had a second teaching


experience in F3 6 (Form 6 Electrotechnics).

II.4. FORTH WEEK (From 20th to 27th of February 2012)

I had a class at 12:40pm with F37 on Monday the 20th of February. We


treated Choppers. Some exercises were solved and an assignment was given
to do at home.

On the 21th of February at 12:40pm I had a class with F3-6 and we


treated the bipolar transistor and the field effect transistor and tackled some
application exercises. A home work was given to the students at the end of the
lesson.

II.5. FIFTH WEEK (From the 27th to 5th of March 2012)

As usual I had a class with F37 on Monday at 12:40pm and we


completed the step up chopper where we ended in the last class. The
assignments given were treated and the next lesson introduced.

On Friday 2nd of March I had a class with F3-6 and the lesson taught
was application of transistor and transistor in commutation. Some application
exercises were treated and an assignment given.

II.6. SIXTH WEEK (From the 5th to 12th of March 2012)

This was mock examination week and I evaluated F3-6 and F37 on all
what had already been taught. I was concerned by the inspection and
invigilated in F47 on Tuesday and Thursday

On Wednesday the 7th of March 2012 we had our school administration


in G.T.H.S Kumbo. They were in Kumbo about the follow up.

II.7. SEVENTH WEEK (From 12th to 19th of March 2012)

On Monday the 12th of March I continued and concluded the lesson on


step up choppers introduced the corrections of the mock examination was
done and the students’ papers given back to them in F3-7.

This week marks the beginning of the preparations for the open
door day which will take place on Friday 16th, we leaded various works in the
electronics and of electrotechnical workshops.

On Friday 16th March 2012, we had the visit of the representative of the sub-
divisional official who was received by the school administration. After the
opening ceremony, it was the beginning of the visit of the various workshops
by the delegation led by the sub- divisional official and the principal.

II.8. OBSERVATIONAL CONFERENCES

This is the phase when the cooperating teacher and the student-teacher
get together to discuss about the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson and
make suggestions for the improvement in the subsequent lessons. At the end
of each lesson, the cooperating teacher and I discussed about the lesson. Some
comments given by the cooperating teacher are stated below:

 Good dressing.

 Good class room control.

 Mastery of subject matter and language.

 Good presentation of lesson and lesson note.

 Lesson should be given in a chronological manner and not scattered.

 I had to master the students’ names and call them by their names.

 I had to always move round the classroom and verify whether the
students were following the lesson and taking down notes.

II.9. PEDAGOGIC EXAMINATION

Our pedagogic examination took place on Thursday the 22nd of March


2012. We had to prepare two lessons, the theoretical and the practical lesson.
My theoretical pedagogic examination lesson was “The operational amplifier”
and the practical lesson was “The realization of a decoder by using logic
gates.” We were each given about 40 minutes to present our lessons, about
25 minutes for the theory and 15 minutes for the practice.

The pedagogic examination started at about 08:00am because we were


informed about the exam on time. We got the information one day before the
evaluation day so we were ready yet. The president of the Jury was Mr.
SOUTOU Clement (N.P.I for Electronics), the reporter was Mr. BETANGA (R.P.I
for Electronics), and Mr. NGOUNE Jean Paul was a member of the Jury.

The Lesson working statement sheet and Pedagogic statement sheets


for both the theoretical and practical lesson are presented are found in
Appendix B and Appendix C respectively. The theoretical and practical lessons
presented that day are found in Appendix D and Appendix E respectively.

II.9.1 COMMENTS GIVEN BY MEMBERS OF JURY

After the evaluation, the jury invited me to sit down and listen to their
questions and comments. Many remarks were made about my presentation
and some of them are stated below.

 I made a good use of my audible voice.


 I had a good class control.
 A good level of subject mastery.
 I used a very good and simple language.

 The class did not participate much in the lesson.


 I did not use the chalk board correctly.
 I did not circulate in the classroom to verify what students were doing.

I was then given advice on how to improve on my teaching capacity


after which I was congratulated and asked to leave the classroom for the jury
to deliberate.

II.10 DIFFICULTIES AND RECOMMENDATIONS


II.10.1 DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED

We faced many difficulties during our teaching practice exercise and some of
them are stated below.

 GTHS Santa does not have enough classrooms so I sometimes had to


move round the school campus looking for an empty classroom in which
to give my lesson.
 The discipline masters are not really serious over the issue of late
coming in school. Lessons that scheduled for 8:00 am in the morning
always began at least 30 minutes late because I had to wait for students
to come to class.
 Due to the high level of indiscipline in the school, students were coming
to school and going back home when they wished. Some students were
even very rude and arrogant to teachers and I really felt unsecured.
 The school has no library. It has a small book store with very poor books
which were not very useful to me for research.
 The electronics laboratory is very local and ill equipped.
 A very poor organisation and planning of the pedagogic examination. We
were informed about our pedagogic examination just one day before it
took place. We thus did not have the time to prepare adequately.

II.10.2 RECOMMENDATIONS

 Internship programs should be handed to student-teachers before they go


for teaching practice. This will help them to organise themselves and be
better prepared for the pedagogic exams.
 The school administration should inform student-teachers on time about
their internships so that they may be morally and financially prepared for
it.
 The choices of students for the regions they would like to do their
internships should be respected. They should not be sent to regions which
were neither their first nor their second choices.
 Parents should be sensitised about the importance of technical education.
It is often thought that technical education is for the students who could
not succeed in the general education. This mentality should be erased
completely so that we have a good quality of graduate students produced.
 If student-teachers could respect their time, it will go a long way to solve
clashes between teachers as far as leaving the class late is concerned.
 Cooperating teachers should be chosen on the bases of punctuality,
assiduity and determination in their work. Also, cooperating teachers
should endeavour to assist those who will be their colleagues in the nearest
future.
 The time keeper should not be a student rather it should be a discipline
master so that there will be some regularity in the time intervals.

CONCLUSION
2011/2012

CONCLUSION

Teaching practice offers opportunities for student-teachers to acquire


practical experience of directing the learning of a group of learners over a
specific period of time and to participate actively in the various activities
involved in the actual teaching situations. The saying that “appetite comes by
eating” could be applied to teaching as “we know how to teach by teaching”.
During my teaching practice, I had an opportunity to practice what I had been
taught in school.

Although the teaching practices exercise was not an easy task due to
many points already stated in the sections above, the teaching practice went
on better than I even expected. We received a warm welcomed from the school
administration when we arrived in Kumbo this really made us feel at home
there and it was a source of motivation for my internship exercise.

I will conclude by saying that teaching actually is a noble profession for


those who value it and if all of the above difficulties and recommendations are
considered all student teachers will go through their teaching practice
exercises successfully without much trouble and fear.
