The Average O-net Score of Mahidol University International Demonstration

School students

O-net is a standardized educational test, aimed to examine the knowledge and

thinking skills of each individual. The test is taken every three years by the students from

Grade 3 until Grade 12. The test includes core subjects such as English, Science, Math,

Social Studies and History. As stated by the National Institute of Educational Testing

Service (NIETS), the score is recorded and analyzed by them. As a result, the data would

show the scholastic proficiency of each student. In addition, it helps them to keep track of

how effective each school curriculum is. Only a few of the MUIDS students have taken

the O-net since 2013. The reason for this is to test their understanding of rudimental skills

so that the school can effectively improve. What is the average O-net score of MUIDS

students? Will the result help improve MUIDS teaching system? The average O-net score

of MUIDS is low.

The purpose of this research report is to find out the average O-net score of MUIDS

students by consolidating the data from Student Services. The importance of this research

is to document the average O-net score of MUIDS students. The author uses three

academic articles to support the result in form of a graph.

The average score of MUIDS students is collected by asking for information from

Student Services. The data were given out by NIETS and the school recorded it. The line

graph below represents the average score of MUIDS students from 2015 until 2018. In

2015, the average score is 61.084 out of a hundred which is not that high. Furthermore,

from 2015 to 2016, it has dropped 11.5 percent from 63.084 to 53.06; however, in 2017, it

raised back to 63.274. Recently, in 2018, the average score has decreased 2.54 percent

from 63.274 to 61.67. Additionally, there are 18 students who took the test in 2015, 16

students in 2016, 19 students in 2017 and 9 students in 2018.

The reason for this could be that the number of participants each year is low. In

addition, MUIDS is an international program school; therefore, the students might not be

familiar with the Thai version exams. Most of the students’ college plans are to study in

an international college or abroad. Consequently, O-net, a national test, would not benefit

or affect their goals that much (Panpruek, 2017). However, the individual average English

score of MUIDS is extremely high compared to the other. Based on NIETS, it was an

outstanding performance measured up the average English score of all the school. The

solution is to ask the students whether they required a good O-net score to apply in college

or not. If they do then, the school must provide a extra preparational lesson for the O-net

exam.

This research report concludes that the average O-net score of MUIDS students

from 2015 to 2018 is low. Nevertheless, the average English score of MUIDS students is

extremely high compared to the standard. This indicates that MUIDS students are up to

the standard in their English proficiency and skill. Nevertheless, the other subjects won’t

affect them that much. Therefore, it depends on each student distinct future college path

(Sarikulya, 2018). They must decide whether do they require O-net score or not.
