ABSTRACT
 In this work, a remote controlled device is used to control 1 - 6 different
single phase loads like Fans, Tube Lights and etc.,
 This Automation can be operated up to a 30 feet of distance . Our work is
based on Infra-Red(IR) technology and a simple Arduino Board(AB) using
Printed Circuit Board(PCB).
 The new designed circuit is more advantageous as it is portable, easy to
carry and use.
 For the maintenance and repairs of this circuit are very minimum. Also,
Power consumption is low which reduces the saving of electrical energy.

INTRODUCTION
 Automation is a technique of controlling a process by
electronic devices with reducing human involvement to a
minimum.

 The concept of “automation” has existed for many years.

 Home automation has become a one of the upcoming

field in recent era. The main objective of home
automation is to help handicapped and old aged people.

4
CONTIN…..
 This project presents the ease of approach of controlling
the devices in a household that could ease the tasks of
using the traditional method of the switch.

 The efficient technology for short range wireless

communication- IR communication is used here to
automate the system.

5
LITERATURE REVIEW
 Haque proposed an internet based wireless home
automation system for multi functional devices using wi-
fi based technology.

 Shih-Pang given the information about designing of

Arduino with Bluetooth board for home automation. The
python programming language is used to write the
program for Arduino board.

 Home automation can also be implemented using other

technologies like Zig-Bee and DTMF. 6
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
1. Electricity was discovered more than 200 years ago, but
I
still now we are operating switches manually. Manual
operation some times leads to danger of electric shocks.

2. To avoid this problem, we were developed a IR based

automation to control any 1- phase electrical equipment
remotely

3. Our developed automation system relates the insurance of

removal of good amount of human work, saving of time,
security, decrement of monotony, reduction of power
consumption and overall, economic improvement.

Methodology of Home Automation

8
1. ARDUINO BOARD

 Arduino is a popular open-source single-board

microcontroller.

 An Arduino board consists of an 8-bit Atmel AVR

microcontroller. In this Arduino board AT mega 328p micro
controller is used. Micro controller has 32 pins and it was
internally connected in Arduino board.

 Arduino programs are written in C, C++ and java programs,

although users only need define two functions to make a
runnable program, those are set up() and loop().

9
 setup() – a function run once at the start of a program that can
initialize settings.

 loop() – a function called repeatedly until the board powers off.

 Program will be written in personal Computer(PC) and program will

be uploaded to Arduino board through USB cable.

 After uploading program USB cable will be removed from the

Arduino board, and supply is given by the 5v 1A adopter to the
arduino board.

2. TSOP 1738 SENSOR
 The TSOP17.. – series are miniaturized receivers for
infrared remote control systems.

 The demodulated output signal can directly be decoded by a

microprocessor. TSOP1738 is the standard IR remote control
receiver series, supporting all major transmission codes.

 It has 3 pins out pin, supply pin and ground pin.

3. RELAY MODULE
 A relay is an electrically operated switch.

 This type of relay that can handle the high power required to
directly control an electric motor or other loads.

 It consists of 5 pins, two pins are connected to coil(A&B),

Normally open pin, Normally closed pin and common pin.

13

5V Relay
Relay pin diagram

 Two pins A and B are two ends of a coil that are kept inside the relay.
The coil is wound on a small rod that gets magnetized whenever current
passes through it.

 COM is always connected to NC(Normally connected) pin. As current is

passed through the coil A, B, the pole gets connected to NO(Normally
Open) pin of the relay.
14
5. SWITCHED MODE POWER SUPPLY(5V,1A)
 A switched-mode power supply(SMPS) is an electronic power supply that
incorporates a switching regulator to convert electrical power efficiently.

 An SMPS transfers power from a DC or AC source to DC loads.

 Here, the input to SMPS is 230V Single phase AC supply, and it is converted
into 5V 1A dc supply.

4. IR REMOTE
 Today’s modern remote controls work by modulating the output from an
infra-red LED.

 Usually it requires a line of sight communication. When a button is

pressed, the corresponding circuitry gets connected to bias the IR LED
which emits IR light which contains the input

 Connections of this circuit is very simple here a liquid crystal display
is used for displaying status of home appliances which is directly
connected to arduino.

 Data pins of LCD namely RS, EN, D4, D5, D6, D7 are connected to
arduino digital pin number 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11

 Output pin of TSOP1738 is directly connected at digital pin number 14

(A) of Arduino.

 Vcc pin is connected a +5 volt and GND pin connected at Ground

terminal of circuit.

 A relay driver namely ULN2003 is also used for driving relays. 5 volt
SPDT 3 relays are used for controlling LIGHT, FAN and TV and relays
are connected to arduino pin number 3, 4 and 5 through relay driver19

SIMULATION ANALYSIS
Software : Autodesk-123D circuits
It allows us to learn electronics using a virtual Arduino
board and breadboard without blowing up capacitors or
burning yourself with solder on your work table. The service is
free and upgraded accounts are available for $12 and $25 a
month.

ADVANTAGES
 Prevent Electrical shocks

 Easy to operate for old age and physically disabled people

 Using a remote to control reduces human efforts and also saves time.

 This circuit can be operated up to a distance of 30 feet.

 It is portable and easy to use, simple in construction, easy to repair and

low cost design.

 Easy to operate to control the device in rainy conditions.

25
CONCLUSION
 In conclusion, this low cost system is designed to improve the
standard living in home and also it provides assistance especially
to disabled and elderly.

 The implementation of IR sensor in control board allows the

system installation in more simple way.
