Fair is blocked off of Grace Hardy’s
calendar every year.
“If you can’t get a hold of Mom,
she’s at the fair,” said Hardy, detailing
the common knowledge shared among
her family each summer when the fair
rolls into town.
The San Mateo resident is a dedicated
volunteer, spending the free time in
her retirement over each of the past
seven summers helping guests navi-
gate the fairgrounds, assisting with

Sanders makes case for democratic socialism after criticism

WASHINGTON — Bernie Sanders on
Wednesday mounted a strong defense of dem-
ocratic socialism, the economic philosophy
that has guided his political career, even as
Republicans and some of his Democratic
presidential opponents have seized on it to
brand him as too radical.
Sanders’ speech, coming two weeks before
the first debates of the Democratic primary, is
his most aggressive attempt yet to reframe
the conversation about his political views.
His ability to define the debate around his
core political philosophy will be crucial if he
is to convince voters that his embrace of
democratic socialism isn’t a barrier to win-
ning the White House.
“Let me be clear: I do understand that I and
other progressives will face massive attacks
from those who attempt to use the word
‘socialism’ as a slur,” Sanders said. “But I
should also tell you that I have faced and over-

are running on and portrayed them as outside
the mainstream of most Americans’ views.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — During a campaign
swing through Iowa this week, Joe Biden
mentioned that his family recently dined with
former President Barack Obama’s family. At a
Houston fundraiser, Biden joked about the
infamous expletive he deployed in congratu-
lating Obama’s health care victory. And
Biden recently tweeted an image of Joe and
Barack friendship bracelets.
The message is clear: Biden really wants
you to know he’s still friends with Obama.
He’s betting that by dangling nostalgia for
the Obama years before Democrats, he can
help rebuild the diverse
national coalition that
twice propelled Obama to
victory. Obama hasn’t
backed any of the two
dozen Democrats running
for president, and Biden’s
advisers insist that his
2020 bid is his own. But
Barack Obama for now, Obama is play-
ing a starring role in
Biden’s message.
“It’s a nomination strategy, and it’s pretty
rich in its benefits,” David Axelrod, Obama’s
chief political strategist, said of Biden’s fre-
quent references to Obama. “The fact that he
had Obama’s back is particularly meaningful
to African American vot-
ers. And I think if he gets
this nomination that is
going to be the reason
why.”

launching his campaign,
the 76-year-old leads his
party’s crowded presiden-

Catherine M. Etezadi Walter Wenger

February 19, 1925 – June 8, 2019
Our beloved Catherine passed away on June 8, 2019 at 94 years
of age at her home surrounded by her loving family and close
friends. Catherine leaves behind her daughter, Susan Etezadi of
Redwood City, California (Marianne Barrett), her son, David
Etezadi, of Los Angeles, California, her niece, Marianne McKone,
of Nokesville, Virginia and numerous friends and relatives.
Catherine was born on February 19, 1925 in Grand Rapids,
Michigan to Joseph McKone and Irene O’Neill. Catherine was 100% Irish. Her father
was a traveling salesman, so the family moved often as she was growing up.
In 1952 Catherine joined the American Foreign Service. She was stationed in
Tehran, Iran for three years as an Administrative Assistant for the Point Four Program.
Catherine traveled throughout Iran and India. She also traveled throughout Europe on
the Orient Express. In 1953, she met Hooshang Etezadi, who worked for the Iranian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1955 they returned to the United States to be married.
They lived in New York City, where Hooshang was assigned to the United Nations
Security Council. Their daughter, Susan, was born while they were living in New York
City.
Thereafter, the family returned to Tehran, Iran during which time their son, David,
was born. Catherine and Hooshang lived on and off in Iran for over 20 years and
eventually moved to Marin County, California where they remained for twenty-one
years. Catherine loved the Iranian people and culture and had treasured memories
of her time living in Iran and raising her family. She learned to speak Farsi and
cook delicious Persian food and had many Iranian friends and family. Catherine and
Hooshang traveled the world together and enjoyed many cross-country road trips
throughout the United States. They owned property in Lake Tahoe and enjoyed many
happy times there.
In 1999, Catherine and Hooshang moved to a senior community in Lincoln Hills,
California, where she lived for the next fifteen years. Hooshang passed away in 2003
after forty-eight years of marriage. Catherine and her daughter traveled extensively
together over the ensuing years and spent many wonderful days enjoying life together
as they were especially close. Eventually, Catherine moved to the Magnolia of
Millbrae in Millbrae, California in 2014 to be closer to her daughter.
While living at the Magnolia, Catherine met many wonderful people and enjoyed
reading, playing bridge, scrabble, and dinners in the grand dining room with her
dear friends. She had a wonderful appetite for food and life. She was independent,
very intelligent, gracious and courageous. She lived her life with honesty, dignity,
compassion and strength.
All who knew her will remember her for her intelligence, her sharp wit, her keen
sense of humor and her interest in people and cultures from all around the world. She
was open-minded and inclusive of all people. She instilled these same qualities in her
children.
Catherine’s family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers and staff at the Magnolia
of Millbrae who did an outstanding job of taking care of her over the years. The family
also wishes to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses and caring staff at Kaiser Redwood
City for their care and compassion. Further, the family thanks the wonderful caring
staff at Satellite Dialysis Center in San Mateo where Catherine received dialysis for
the last three years of her life.

Passed peacefully at his home in San Carlos, California at
the age of 74. Devoted husband of 40 years to Benedicte
Snerding Wenger, loving father of Babette Snerding Babich
(Peter), Natalie Wenger (Daryl). Beloved grandfather to
Pierson, Braden, Lauren, Hunter and Owen, older brother to
Fred Wenger (Beverly-Jean). He is preceded in death by his
parents Fritz and Marie, his older brother Bill Wenger and
sister Anna-Marie Jones (Lee).Born in San Mateo, Walter attended Capuchino High
School in San Bruno where he excelled in 3 sports: football, wrestling, and track.
In track he threw the shot put and discus and still holds the record for throwing the
longest discus 57 years later!!!
He received the “Outstanding Player Award” 1961-1962.Walt loved “contact”
sports. He proceeded to play football and wrestle at the College of San Mateo. There
he received NCJC 2nd-HWT award (1963) and Most Valuable Player CSM (1963).
Some other awards he was given in 1963 are: CSM 63 INV.Tourn.1st HWT lbs
N.C.S- J.C. Tourn 64 2nd unlimited CAL.POLY J.C. HWT- 2nd place (1964). He
continued his college education at Weber State, Ogden, Utah on a full ride football
scholarship. There he earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education.
In 1965, he received the Weber County Award for Weber State College’s Big Sky
Conference. “Football Champions! Won 8 lost 1!” During the summers he worked
for the Forest Service, stationed close to French Meadows in a fire lookout tower. He
loved being in the forest and driving the huge water truck on remote fire roads. After
college, Walt decided to return to his beloved home in San Bruno.
There he started a career of teaching for the South San Francisco Unified School
District which lasted several decades. He coached football, taught physical education,
math and his favorite life science. Walt loved the ocean so much that while diving
for abalone he would collect “interesting specimens” to share and dissect with his
students in class. During this time he also became a commercial abalone diver and fed
his family and friends VERY well. Not surprising, he was well liked by his students
and peers. It was during this time that his close colleagues and friends nicknamed him
the HEAD SHRINKER. He was also passionate about fishing and shared the sport
with his children, grandchildren and friends.
Walt loved his BlueGrass family, and he never missed the yearly BlueGrass
Festival in Grass Valley on Father’s Day. He also spent many summers traveling with
his family to visit relatives in Switzerland, France, Denmark and England. In his later
years he looked forward to his weekly poker group comprised of a close group of
loyal friends who never failed to bring him laughter, and when the cards were good
even some cash! Walt was such a wonderful husband, and a fantastic dad and role
model for his two daughters. He loved watching his grandkids play baseball, soccer,
football, volleyball, and basketball.
He was respected for his wisdom, unfailing generosity and gentle spirit - unless you
encountered him on the football field. His keen sense of humor, boundless goodwill
and affection for family and friends is how we will remember him. He was our rock
and he will be dearly missed. A special thanks to Finau for providing outstanding
care for Walt during his final years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the

Former Trump aide Hope Hicks
agrees to Judiciary interview

House communications director Hope
Hicks has agreed to a closed-door
interview with the House Judiciary
Committee, the panel announced
Wednesday, a breakthrough for
Democrats who have been frustrated by
President Donald Trump’s broad
stonewalling of their investigations.
The Judiciary panel subpoenaed
Hicks, a close and trusted Trump aide
who worked for the presidential cam-
paign and in the White House, last
month as part of its investigation into
special counsel Robert Mueller’s
report and obstruction of justice. Her
June 19 interview will mark the first
time a former Trump aide has testified
before the panel as part of its probe.
Hicks was a key witness for Mueller,
delivering important information to
the special counsel’s office about mul-
tiple episodes involving the presi-
dent. That includes the president’s role
in the drafting of a misleading and
incomplete statement about a 2016
Trump Tower meeting at which Donald
Trump Jr. expected to receive dirt on
Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Hicks and another former White
House aide, Annie Donaldson, both
defied subpoenas last week to provide
documents to the committee after the
White House directed them not to
cooperate. That came after former
White House counsel Don McGahn
also defied subpoenas for documents
and testimony at the direction of the
White House. McGahn was mentioned

frequently in Mueller’s report, in addi-
tion to Donaldson, who was his aide.
It is unclear whether Hicks will
decline to answer some questions relat-
ed to her time in the White House. She
has so far declined to release any docu-
ments related to that period after the
White House said she had no legal
right to provide them. But she has
turned over documents related to her
time on the Trump campaign.
While the interview will be behind
closed doors, the committee chair-
man, Jerrold Nadler, said the interview
transcript will be released to the pub-
lic.
“It is important to hear from Ms.
Hicks, who was a key witness for the
special counsel,” Nadler said. “Ms.

Hicks understands that the committee
will be free to pose questions as it sees
fit.”
Democrats hope that Hicks’ inter-
view will be the first of many related to
Mueller’s report. They are expected to
go to court soon to enforce a subpoena
against McGahn, and negotiations are
ongoing for Mueller’s own testimony.
Mueller has made it clear that he does-
n’t want to testify and will not go
beyond the substance of the report in
any questioning, but Democrats want
to talk to him anyway.
Nadler said Tuesday that he also
hopes to call in Jody Hunt, who served
as former Attorney General Jeff
Sessions’ chief of staff, and former
White House aide Rick Dearborn.

what to do about Trump’s deeds
WASHINGTON — With a familiar chant, President Donald
Trump’s backers regularly called for Hillary Clinton to be
thrown in prison during the 2016 cam-
paign. Now top Democrats are grappling
with fraught questions about whether to
lock HIM up.
As Democrats in Congress press for
continued investigation of Trump while
he remains in office, the party’s presi-
dential candidates are weighing how to
address his alleged misdeeds when he’s
Kamala Harris no longer in the White House. It’s a ques-
tion that raises the potential of
Democrats politicizing law enforcement, something
they’ve blasted Trump for doing.
Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said in
an interview released Wednesday that if she wins the White
House, her Justice Department “would have no choice” but
to pursue an obstruction of justice case against Trump after
he leaves office.
Harris’ comments come after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
told fellow Democrats that she would rather see Trump
defeated in the election, then imprisoned, than impeached
in Congress. That’s partly a way to quiet the push from mul-
tiple Democrats vying to replace Trump, who want their
party to start the impeachment process.
House panel votes to
hold top US officials in contempt
WASHINGTON — A House committee voted Wednesday to
hold two top Trump administration officials in contempt of
Congress for failing to comply with subpoenas for docu-
ments related to a decision adding a citizenship question to
the 2020 census.
The Democratic-controlled House Oversight Committee
voted 24-15 to advance contempt measures against
Attorney General William Barr and Commerce Secretary
Wilbur Ross. Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, who has said
he supports an impeachment inquiry against President
Donald Trump, was the sole Republican to join with
Democrats.
The vote sends the contempt measures to the full House,
although congressional leaders could go directly to court to
try to force compliance with the subpoenas under a resolu-
tion approved earlier this week.

Trump says he may move 2,000 US troops to Poland

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump
says he is considering moving about 2,000
additional U.S. troops into Poland from
Germany or elsewhere in Europe.
But Trump cautioned during an Oval Office
meeting Wednesday with Polish President
Andrzej Duda that a final decision has not
been made.
Trump said the United States has based
tens of thousands of troops in Germany for
a “long, long time” and that he probably
would move a “certain number” of those per-
sonnel to Poland, “if we agree to do it.”
“We haven’t totally made up the deci-
sion,” he told reporters as he appeared with
Duda in the Oval Office. “We haven’t final-
ized anything.”
Trump said Poland is interested in buying
more than 30 F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jets
from the U.S.

Polish leaders have lobbied for additional
forces for months and had hoped for a per-
manent U.S. base they said could be called
“Fort Trump.”
The leaders planned a joint signing cere-
mony their Rose Garden news conference.
Following the Russian annexation of
Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014, the
U.S. has again been increasing military
activity in Europe in concert with NATO
allies. That includes stationing four multi-
national battalion-size battlegroups in
alliance members Poland, Estonia, Latvia
and Lithuania, led respectively by the U.S.,
Britain, Canada and Germany.

Catholic bishops approve new sex-abuse reporting hotline

BALTIMORE — U.S. Catholic bishops
voted Wednesday to create a new national
sex-abuse hotline run by an independent
entity, a decision that represents one of the
church’s most tangible steps yet in con-
fronting its sex-abuse crisis.
The hotline, which would field allega-
tions that bishops committed abuse or cov-
ered it up, would take complaints by tele-
phone and through an online link. It’s sup-
posed to be operating within a year.
Hotline operators would relay allegations
to regional supervisory bishops. Church
leaders are encouraging those bishops —
though not requiring them — to seek help
from lay experts in assessing and investi-
gating allegations.
“I can’t imagine a bishop not using a lay-
led review board that’s filled with people
who have expertise in this area of investi-
gation, people with a legal background or a
law enforcement background,” said Robert
Barron, the auxiliary bishop of the Los
Angeles Archdiocese.
Bishops approved the idea on the second
day of their national meeting. The new sys-
tem’s startup costs were estimated at
$30,000, with an ongoing annual cost of
about $50,000.
The bishops raised questions about how
the system would operate, including who
would receive the reports, how the reports
would be handled, when authorities should
be notified and how the church would ensure
that victims are taken care of.
Anthony Picarello Jr., general counsel for
the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops,
summarized it as a “very sophisticated
switchboard.” He said the church is engag-
ing with at least one vendor that already
provides a reporting system in Baltimore.

scholar’s death: He did it

PEORIA, Ill. — A federal prosecutor on Wednesday told
jurors in grisly detail that authorities believe a former
University of Illinois doctoral student kidnapped a visiting
scholar from China, and beat her to death with a baseball
bat. Defense attorneys intent on sparing their client a pos-
sible death penalty then offered an exceptional response:

Opening statements began in the death-penalty trial of
Brendt Christensen, a case which is being closely watched
in China and by Chinese students across the U. S.
Christensen is accused of posing as an undercover officer to
lure 26-year-old Yingying Zhang into his car on June 9,
2017, as she headed to sign a lease off campus.
Christensen, who is over 6-foot, took Zhang to his apart-
ment where he raped, choked and stabbed her in his bed-
room, as the 5-foot-4 Zhang tried to fight him off, prosecu-
tor Eugene Miller said in his opening statement to jurors
Wednesday. Christensen then dragged Zhang into his bath-
room, and pummeled her in the head with the bat before
decapitating her, Miller said.
With Zhang’s father, a part-time trailer-truck driver from
China, sitting just a few feet away on a courtroom bench,
Miller also revealed for the first time that Christensen was
captured on an FBI wiretap bragging that Zhang had been
his 13th victim. But the prosecutor didn’t offer additional
details, nor did he say if authorities believed him. Miller
appeared to broach the issue in order to demonstrate
Christensen’s quest to be known as a serial killer.
It was not immediately clear if authorities were investi-
gating Christensen’s alleged claim. Prosecutors have said
they won’t comment on the trial while it’s ongoing.

KHARTOUM, Sudan — Activists called off a general
strike and civil disobedience campaign as more businesses
reopened and traffic returned to its normal bustle on
Wednesday in Sudan’s capital of Khartoum following last
week’s deadly clashes between pro-democracy demonstra-
tors and security forces in the country’s political crisis.
Security forces violently dispersed the main protest sit-in
on June 3 in Khartoum, killing over 100 people in the cap-
ital and across the country in a sweeping crackdown,
according to protest organizers. It was an alarming turn in
the two-month standoff between the protest movement and
the military, which removed President Omar al-Bashir from
power in April amid a popular uprising against his rule.

Stocks closed modestly lower on Wall
Street Wednesday, handing the market its
second straight loss.
Banks and technology companies
accounted for much of the slide as investors
shifted money into U.S. bonds, precious
metals and other holdings considered safe
havens after more than a week of aggressive
buying.
Energy stocks took the heaviest losses
following a 4% drop in the price of U.S.
crude oil. That helped outweigh gains in
health care, utilities and elsewhere in the
market.
The latest decline followed a broad drop in
stocks that ended a five-day winning streak
for the market. The Federal Reserve set off
last week’s rally when it signaled that it is
willing to cut interest rates to help stabilize
the economy if the U.S. trade war with
China starts to crimp growth.
Investors are worried that the dispute will
drag on much longer than previously
expected, weighing on economic growth
and corporate profits. That has traders look-
ing ahead to next week’s Fed meeting.
“There are concerns about whether or not
the Fed next week at its meeting is going to

lowering rates,” said Quincy Krosby, chief
market strategist at Prudential Financial.
“The increasing concern is that the global
economy continues to slow and that the slow-
down is affecting the United States as well.”

It’s the latest flap over deviously altered
“deepfake” videos as Facebook and other
social media services struggle to stop the
spread of misinformation and “fake news”
while also respecting free speech and fend-
ing off allegations of censorship.
The somewhat crude video of the
Facebook CEO, circulating on Facebook-
owned Instagram over
the past few days, com-
bines news footage of
Zuckerberg with phony
audio.

Zuckerberg seemingly
intones in a voice that does not sound very
much like Zuckerberg’s. “I owe it all to
Spectre. Spectre showed me that whoever
controls the data controls the future. ”
(Spectre is the evil organization in the
James Bond movies.)
The video was created by artists Bill
Posters and Daniel Howe with help from
artificial intelligence companies and dis-
played over the past week or so at an art
show in Britain on the influence of technol-
ogy. Posters also put the footage on
Instagram and Vimeo.
Posters said he targeted Zuckerberg as
“one person governing control of 2 billion
people’s personal private data. He’s at the
center of the debate that asks questions
whether that is a safe place for our data to
be.”
When the Pelosi video turned up on
Facebook, the social network said it did not
violate any of its policies. Pelosi criticized
Facebook at the time for leaving the video
up. Zuckerberg tried to reach out to her to
explain the situation, but she did not take
his call, according to a person familiar with
the matter who was not authorized to discuss
it and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Facebook and Pelosi’s office declined to
comment Wednesday.
Facebook said the Zuckerberg video like-
wise doesn’t violate its Instagram policies
and will be left up.
“We will treat this content the same way
we treat all misinformation on Instagram,”
the company said in a statement.
Facebook does not prohibit false infor-
mation from being shared on Instagram or
its main Facebook service. If third-party
fact checkers flag an item on the main serv-
ice as false, the company “downranks” it to
make it more difficult to find.

Uber tests drone food delivery, launches new autonomous SUV

WASHINGTON — Uber is testing restau-
rant food deliveries by drone.
The company’s Uber Eats unit began the
tests in San Diego with McDonald’s and
plans to expand to other restaurants later
this year.
Uber says the service should decrease food
delivery times.
It works this way: Workers at a restaurant
load the meal into a drone and it takes off,
tracked and guided by a new aerospace man-
agement system.
The drone then meets an Uber Eats driver
at a drop-off location, and the driver will
hand-deliver the meal to the customer.
In the future, the company wants to land
drones atop parked vehicles
near delivery locations and
secure them to the vehicle
for the final mile of the delivery.
Last year Uber and the city of San Diego
won a bid from the U.S. Federal Aviation
Administration to test food delivery by air.
“We’ve been working closely with the
FAA to ensure that we’re meeting require-
ments and prioritizing safety, ” Luke
Fischer, head of flight operations at Uber
Elevate, said in a statement Wednesday.
The company said the knowledge it gains
from the tests will help with Uber’s planned
aerial ride-sharing network.
Also Wednesday, Uber announced that it
would work with Volvo Cars to build a vehi-
cle that comes off the assembly line capable
of driving autonomously.
The ride-hailing company’s self-driving
system will be installed in production ver-
sions of the Volvo XC90 SUV. The vehicle’s
steering and braking systems are designed
for computer rather than human control,
including several backup systems for both
steering and braking functions and battery
backup power.

PEBBLE BEACH — Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth began
the final day of U.S. Open preparation with a walk along the
beach.
No other U.S. Open has such a calming effect, especially
the seven-hole stretch along the Pacific coast with sweep-
ing views of sea lions basking on the rocks below the sixth
green and people walking dogs on the seashore below the
10th fairway.
“What’s not to like?” Dustin Johnson said. “The golf
course is fantastic from start to finish. When you’ve got
nice weather, it’s quite beautiful out there.”
About the time Woods and Spieth, along with Justin
Thomas and Kevin Kisner, began their nine-hole practice
round Wednesday on No. 10, fog crept over the foothills and
soon blanketed the course. Visibility was reduced to about
250 yards.
It was an ominous sign the U.S. Open is no holiday.
Johnson is among the early starters when the 119th U.S.
Open begins Thursday at Pebble Beach, which is celebrat-
ing its 100th year.
He is one of the favorites, not only from his sheer skill,
but historical reasons whether it’s February or June.
Johnson has won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am twice and
was runner-up twice. The last time the U.S. Open was at
Pebble, he had a three-shot lead going into the final round
until he rushed his way through a triple bogey, a double
bogey and a bogey before he reached the fifth hole.
Johnson shot 82 and tied for eighth.
“The golf course was great,” Johnson said about 2010. “I

Enriquez continues to excel at next level

The rigors of the catching position had
Ramon Enriquez somewhat skeptical heading
into his first season at Oklahoma Baptist
University.
After catching every game this season for
the Great American Conference Tournament
champion Bison, however, Enriquez has
shown to have plenty left in the tank as he
continues to produce with his middle-of-the-
order bat.
Enriquez — a graduate of Capuchino and
transfer from Skyline College — proved a
legitimate NCAA Division II slugger batting
cleanup at Oklahoma Baptist this season,
earning All-American honors with a .341
average with 14 home runs while ranking
second in the GAC with 71 RBIs.
“I’m actually extremely satisfied with how
things went this year,” Enriquez said. “I was
going into the year extremely skeptical with
how my performance was going to be
because they asked me to catch every single
game … but surprisingly I was able to keep
my offensive numbers up.”
Picking up right where he left off, Enriquez
hasn’t trailed off playing on the wood-bat
summer circuit. Rostering with the Duluth
Huskies of the Northwoods League, the right-
handed hitter has continued to drive the ball.
Through 12 games, he is batting .286 and is
tied for seventh in the league with two home
runs. Six players are tied for first with three
homers.
“Things are going great,” Enriquez said.

duced a number of NAIA All-Americans over
the years, several thanks to a steady San
Mateo County pipeline, including current

Year Matt Page, both also transfers from
Skyline.
It was a historic season for Oklahoma
Baptist in many regards. Longtime head
coach Bobby Cox — after 35 years and
1,378 wins for the Bison — retired after the
team’s postseason finale May 18. Despite
his tenure spanning four decades, watching
Enriquez catch every game in 2019 was a first
for Cox.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had a guy do that,”
said Cox, not to be confused with the former
Atlanta Braves manager of the same name.
“It was pretty impressive.”

Enriquez’s first formal summer schedule since

senior year at Capuchino, Enriquez played for
the American Legion Post 82 Shockers team
that reached the American Legion World
Series. It was also the final season of
American Legion Post 82 baseball, which
folded prior to the 2017 summer season.
Last summer, Enriquez played with the
Humboldt Crabs, who have played independ-
ently since 2013 after the disbanding that
year of the Far West League. In putting him-
self on the prospect map at Oklahoma
Baptist this season, Enriquez figures to be a
candidate as a senior draftee in the MLB draft
next season if he continues to improve, Cox
said.
“He has all the tools, the makeup, the
toughness to play at the next level,” Cox
said. “He has enough arm strength. He just
needs to polish up a little bit … and I think
playing in the Northwoods League this sum-
mer is really going to help him do that.”
Enriquez’s defensive statistics were suspect
this season, though Cox said the numbers are
misleading. The junior backstop was charged
with 30 passed balls, and he threw out just
18% of would-be base stealers.
“We had a pitching staff that was prone to
that, especially early, and struggled to throw
strikes,” Cox said. “And the stolen base
thing was kind of inflated because we had
trouble holding on runners. … Some of those
numbers were skewed from that standpoint
and some of that was just bad pitching on our
part, no doubt.”
The Bison turned it around through the
final month of the regular season, though,
Longoria stays hot in Giants’
4-2 victory over San Diego
SAN FRANCISCO — Evan Longoria drove
in the go-ahead run with an infield single in
the fifth inning after San Diego made two
errors, and the San Francisco Giants held off
the Padres 4-2 on Wednesday night to com-
plete a two-game sweep.
Kevin Pillar homered for the first time in
more than a month and Donovan Solano had
two hits and two RBIs for the Giants. Buster
Posey went 1 for 4 after coming off the
injured list earlier in the day.
San Diego loaded the bases with two outs in
the ninth against Will Smith before the clos-
er got Manuel Margot to pop out to second
base. Smith’s 16 consecutive saves to start
the season are the second-most for the Giants
since saves became an official stat in 1969.
Shaun Anderson (2-1) pitched four-hit ball
over six innings and had a season-high six
strikeouts for San Francisco. The rookie has a

ing a homer and five RBIs in the 12-3 win in
the championship game May 7 against
Harding University-Arizona.
“It was great to send [Cox] off on a great
note,” Enriquez said, “getting his first
(Division II) conference tournament title
with another back-to-back regional berth.”
The Bisons went on to post a 2-2 record in
the NCAA Division II regional playoffs,
being eliminated on May 18 by Augustana
University-South Dakota.
“For the most part our year was just phe-
nomenal,” Enriquez said. “More towards the
end of the year everyone started getting more
close as a team. The last 13 games of the
year, we were just the hottest team in
Division II baseball.”
One other player of local interest is team-
ing with Enriquez with the Duluth Huskies.
Evan Yedinak — a 2016 graduate of Woodside
who played at Cañada College the past two
years — has made five relief appearances for
the Huskies, posting a 1-0 record with a 4.35
ERA.
“He’s been very effective,” Enriquez said.
“I love catching him. In general, all his
pitches are pretty nice. I can call any pitch in
any situation and I know he’s going to be
able to execute it.”
3.32 ERA in three June starts after going 0-1
with a 4.80 ERA in three May starts.
Eric Hosmer had an RBI double for the
Padres, who committed three errors overall
that led to three runs.
San Diego’s defense came apart in the fifth.
Steven Duggar singled, went to second on a
wild throw by shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.
and scored on Solano’s single. As Solano
rounded first, left fielder Josh Naylor made a
wild throw toward second that sailed out of
play for a two-base error. After Brandon Belt
walked, Tatis made a diving stop on
Longoria’s sharp grounder but threw wide of

Longoria also drove in the go-ahead run of
San Francisco’s 6-5 win over San Diego on

Six arrested in Backup QBs in spotlight at 49ers minicamp

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic
— An alleged gunman and five accomplices
have been detained in the shooting of former
Red Sox superstar David Ortiz, Dominican
officials said Wednesday, while providing no
information about why a group of young men
would try to kill their
country’s most beloved
sports hero.
Four other suspects were
also being pursued in the
shooting, which witness-
es said was carried out by
two men on a motorcycle,
assisted by two other
groups of people in cars.

Aldrin Bautista Almonte, said the coordinator
of the attack was offered 400,000 Dominican
pesos, or about $7,800, to orchestrate the
shooting. He said the alleged coordinator was
also among those in custody.
Rodriguez and Bautista declined to give a
motive for the shooting at a popular Santo
Domingo bar Sunday night or say who had
hired the attackers.
They promised, however, that all those who
targeted Ortiz in the baseball-crazy Caribbean
country would be brought to justice.
“We recognize the symbolism that David
Ortiz represents, and we promise that this case
will be cleared up completely,” Bautista said.
While Ortiz lived in Boston, he visited the
Dominican Republic at least six times a year,
where he crossed paths with a wide variety of
figures from the country’s legitimate and ille-
gal business worlds, according to friends.
Ortiz studiously avoided mixing with shady
characters, but a law-enforcement official said
on condition of anonymity that officials were
investigating whether Ortiz may have formed
some relationship or acquaintance during a
trip here that, without his knowledge, set off
the chain of events leading to his shooting.
Among the suspects in custody was the
alleged shooter, identified by authorities as
Rolfy Ferreyra, aka Sandy, a skinny, tattooed
25-year-old who officials said had confessed
to the shooting.
In a statement, officials said the weapon
used, a Browning Hi Power semi-automatic
pistol, had been handed to suspect Oliver
Moises Mirabal Acosta, then to suspect
Porfirio Allende Dechamps Vasquez, AKA The
Kid, who buried it in the garden of his home.
Both men have been arrested and the gun
has been recovered.

SANTA CLARA — While Jimmy
Garoppolo recovered from a torn left ACL,
his backups took center stage during the
49ers’ minicamp.
The 49ers coaching staff allowed
Garoppolo to participate in seven-on-seven
passing drills but not 11-on-11 team drills.
So backup quarterbacks C.J. Beathard and
Nick Mullens split time with the starters.
Those two are competing to be the 49ers’
No. 2 quarterback behind Garoppolo next
season. Of the two, Beathard has played par-
ticularly well this offseason, said coach
Kyle Shanahan.
“C.J. has had a hell of a camp,” Shanahan
said Wednesday. “You can’t fully know how
much better he has gotten until game time
when you know they can tackle him, but
C.J. has gotten more and more comfortable,
more automatic. He knew the offense right
when he got here and now, in his third year,
he has a lot more reps than he did last year.”
Beathard started five games in 2018 after
Garoppolo tore his ACL against the Kansas
City Chiefs on Sept. 23. In five starts,
Beathard threw eight touchdown passes,
seven interceptions, passed for 1, 252
yards, posted a quarterback rating of 81.8

Stanford avoided prison time when a judge sen-
tenced him Wednesday for his role in a sweep-
ing college admissions scam at elite U.S. uni-
versities.

U.S. District Judge Rya Zobel sentenced him
to one day in prison, which he was deemed to
have served. He will pay a $10,000 fine and
serve two years of supervised release, includ-
ing six months of home confinement with
electronic monitoring.
Zobel said she believed Vandemoer should be
punished because “it’s too easy to do this kind
of thing.” But she said she was swayed by the
powerful letters of support he received and
called him probably the “least culpable” of
those charged in the case because he didn’t take
any of the money for himself.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Rosen urged
the judge to sentence Vandemoer to more than
a year in prison to send a message to others
charged in the case and people considering
cheating the college admissions system,
which he said is “crying out for reform.”

Mayfield — the first pick of the 2018 draft
— had a higher passer rating than Mullens
last season. Mayfield’s rating was 93.7.

Durant undergoes surgery for ruptured Achilles

OAKLAND — Kevin Durant confirmed what
everyone most feared: He underwent surgery
for a ruptured right Achilles tendon.
Durant posted on social media Wednesday
the severity of his injury two days after getting
hurt during Game 5 of the NBA Finals in
Toronto in his return from a strained right calf
that sidelined him a month.
The 30-year-old posted a photo on
Instagram showing himself in a hospital bed
and wrote: “I wanted to update you all: I did rup-
ture my Achilles. Surgery was today and it was
a success, EASY MONEY.”
Just 15 minutes before Durant went public,
Warriors coach Steve Kerr said during a finals
media availability that he didn’t yet have a for-
mal update on Durant. Durant has made his own
announcements before, such as writing on The
Players’ Tribune website about his decision to
leave Oklahoma City to join Golden State in
July 2016.
The Warriors said later Wednesday that
Durant had the surgery at the Hospital for
Special Surgery in New York, performed by Dr.
Martin O’Malley.

general manager Bob Myers asked anyone
who was looking to place blame to do so on
him — not Durant, the medical staff or athletic
trainers who worked so tirelessly to get him
back.
Kerr said he also understands people wanting
to point blame somewhere, though he noted,
“Kevin checked all the boxes, and he was
cleared to play by everybody involved,”
including doctors from within the organiza-
tion and from the outside.
“I completely understand the world we live
in. As Bob mentioned the other night, there’s

If you haven’t figured it out, I write all
this with tongue firmly planted in cheek.
Because as far as I’m concerned, this is
what happened: Durant and his manage-
ment team, along with the Warriors’ top
brass, all the doctors, coaches and anyone
else whose opinion mattered, all got
together and put everything on the table,
weighed all the pros and cons and, as a
team, decided if Durant was able to play.
The consensus was, he could.
And then he got hurt, which happens in
sports. If you want to blame anyone, blame
karma, fate, the basketball gods. The reali-
ty is, Durant simply took a gamble — a
very calculated gamble — and lost.
Such is life.

The other big “controversy” of the week
was the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team and
their 13-0 destruction of an obviously
overmatched Thailand squad in their first
game of pool play in the Women’s World
Cup in France.
The two main complaints were: at one
point do you stop scoring? And, were the
celebration of the American players over
the top?
There are a ton of clichés and adages
when it comes to sports and a common
refrain to this type of situation is this: if
you don’t want them to score, stop them. If

not. I know at the high school level, it’s
not uncommon to see coaches tell their
teams to take the foot off the pedal by
mandating, for example, 10 passes before a
shot, or to take the ball into the corner and
try to burn as much time as possible. There
is also the mass substitution of the starters
for reserves and I’ve even seen scoreboard
operators simply stop adding goals to the
scoreboard once it reached 3- or 4-nothing.
But this is the World Cup, the highest
attainable level for any soccer player —
male or female. To ask any professional
player to “take it easy” on an opponent is
simply not an option.
From a tactical standpoint it makes sense
as well. Unless Sweden, which is the sec-
ond-best team in the Americans’ pool,
agrees not to run up the score against Chile
and Thailand, the United States has every
right to score as many goals as possible
because one of the tiebreakers in pool play
is goal differential. What if the Americans
stopped at five goals and the Swedes go on
to beat Thailand 10-0? Suddenly, the U.S.
is looking at a tougher road to defending
their title.
And as far as celebrations go, I don’t
begrudge any player celebrating a goal. In
soccer, they are (usually) very hard to come
by and to do it on the biggest stage and
then ask them to “act like they’ve been
there before” (another common sports saw)

trucks and [heavy equipment] riding around
because it’s right around the corner from my
house. I can’t do my nightly walk around the
block with my kids because of traffic and
trucks. And what does it do to the prices of

Bolon said the maintenance yard is being
relocated from 25th Avenue because of the

ing ground on the project comprised of four
buildings that are four to seven stories tall.
One residential building features 300 mar-
ket rate units and 20 units affordable to mod-
erate-income people, plus 13,749 square
feet of ground floor retail. The other resi-
dential building consists of 80 affordable
units reserved for veterans. Another build-
ing has 151,583 square feet of offices and
22,534 square feet of ground floor retail and
the hotel offers 164 rooms.
The development, which is slated to
replace parking on BART property, is adja-
cent to the Serra Station project, which
entails 444 residential units, approximate-
ly 290,000 square feet of office space and
about 35,000 square feet of retail space. The
Serra Station development designs were
also approved earlier this year.
Looking toward the opportunity to start
building, Councilwoman Ann Schneider
expressed her support for the project.
“I’d like to get this moving,” she said.
Meanwhile, Mayor Wayne Lee suggested
he would have preferred officials were grant-
able to physically fit the thing in there, it
needs some physical way that pickup trucks
can access it from the roadside and it has to
be compatible with electrification, which

Bolon also noted that there are many sim-

The relocation of the maintenance yard
saw a public review period between Jan. 29,
2018, and Feb. 19, 2018, for the California
Environmental Quality Act and the rail-
road’s joint powers board approved it on
April 5, 2018.
Some residents are also worried about
impacts from bright lights and hazardous
materials; others threatened lawsuits during
the meeting, and many, including San
Mateo Councilman Eric Rodriguez, dispar-
aged Caltrain for its meager outreach
efforts.
“Why this is so disappointing to me is
that San Mateo has traditionally been a very
solid partner with Caltrain and what I don’t
understand is for a very important decision
like this, why didn’t you notify the elected
officials locally? Why didn’t you work with
staff so we could make this decision as a
community?” he asked. “If this was in your

fine,” said Lee, noting his discomfort while
also acknowledging his minority opinion

Meanwhile, Councilwoman Gina Papan

“There are a whole bunch of things before
you get a building permit here, so let’s not
say this is complete,” she said.
Meanwhile, Holober suggested the deci-
sion could help officials stave off criticism
that they are lagging in approving the
development.
“In case anyone is accusing us of another
delay in the project — no, coming back to
discuss these art features will not be impact-
ing the timeline of the development,” he
said.
The suggestion that officials were not
moving quickly enough did not sit well with
Papan.
“A project like this, to come from the

Bolon answered that question in the affir-
mative and conceded that Caltrain’s commu-
nication on this matter was lacking. He also
said robust engagement and community
meetings would have occurred within a few
months from now, and the meeting Tuesday
was held earlier than planned because of
neighborhood pushback.
Many residents were initially alerted to
the planned maintenance yard when heavy
equipment recently began dumping soil on
the site. Bolon noted that the soil trans-
ported to the site came from the 25th Avenue
grade separation project and that construc-
tion work on the maintenance yard has not
officially begun.
Moving forward, Bolon said trees can be
planted to separate the homes from the
maintenance yard and he and his colleagues
will be exploring potential solutions.
“The reality is we’re hearing you and we
are willing to step outside the box to look at
anything and everything,” he said. “I just
don’t want to stand here and over promise
you ‘hey don’t worry about it we’ll move
this thing.’ We need this thing to safely
operate our railroad and there are a whole
bunch of restrictions on where we can put
it.”

to an ad-hoc committee designed to examine
homeless support systems. The coun-
cilmembers will work alongside representa-
tives from law enforcement, the county, the
airport, BART and other local agencies to
develop regional strategies addressing
those who allegedly take BART to the end of
the line in Millbrae then migrate into the
surrounding community.

mounting scrutiny of labor practices
in the burgeoning gig economy.
In an unusual joint op-ed published
in the San Francisco Chronicle on
Wednesday, the leaders of the rival
firms said that to change the way work-

Instead, the companies suggested
changes to the way it treats drivers in
California if it can continue to classify
workers as independent contractors.
That would include giving them a base

compensation, the right to organize,
social security and Medicare, unem-
ployment insurance and more,” she
wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. “We’re
not willing to let big tech upend the
social compact of work in the name of
‘innovation.’ “
Gonzalez’s office did not comment
further.
Proponents of Gonzalez’s legisla-
tion, Assembly Bill 5, argue it would
at least provide certainty to businesses
in the wake of that case, which may
have an impact on industries from
trucking to newspapers.
The state Assembly has passed the
bill, and it’s awaiting a hearing in the
Senate.

Somber memorials on
anniversary of Florida nightclub rampage
ORLANDO, Fla. — Three years after a gunman massacred
49 people and wounded many others at a gay nightclub in
Florida, the anniversary was observed Wednesday with
somber memorial gatherings and proclamations, including
one that had to be issued twice.
In a proclamation, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered
state flags to be lowered to half staff and asked Floridians to
pause to remember the victims of the 2016 shooting at the
Pulse nightclub in Orlando. But he initially made no men-
tion of the gay or Hispanic communities in the proclama-
tion honoring the 49 club-goers who were killed on Latin
night in the deadliest attack on gay people in the U.S.
Democratic state Rep. Anna Eskamani of Orange County
criticized the Republican governor for the omission, call-
ing the proclamation, “straight-washed.”
DeSantis later tweeted that the state mourns the loss of
life from the attack that “targeted the LGBTQ and Hispanic
community, and Florida as a whole.”
Several hours later, his office issued a “corrected version”
of the proclamation that said Florida wouldn’t tolerate hate
toward the LGBTQ and Hispanic communities.
“Staff made an error in the previous version. The gover-
nor has directed that the proclamation be re-issued, includ-
ing a direct reference to our LGBTQ and Hispanic communi-
ties,” said Helen Aguirre Ferre, the governor’s communica-
tions director, in an email accompanying the revised
proclamation.
Three life sentences without
parole for man who killed three Muslims
DURHAM, N.C. — Moments after a North Carolina man
pleaded guilty to gunning down three Muslim university
students, a prosecutor played a cellphone video of the slay-
ings in court Wednesday as one of the victims’ relatives
fainted, others wept and a man cursed the confessed killer
openly.
Craig Stephen Hicks, 50, pleaded guilty to three counts
of first-degree murder more than four years after the
February 2015 slayings and two months after incoming
District Attorney Satana Deberry dropped plans to seek the
death penalty in hopes of concluding a case she said had
languished too long.
“I’ve wanted to plead guilty since day one,” Hicks told
Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson. Hudson sentenced
Hicks to three consecutive life sentences without parole,
tacking on five more years for shooting into a building.

Trump said Wednesday that if a foreign
power offered dirt on his 2020 oppo-
nent, he’d be open to accepting it and
that he’d have no obligation to call in
the FBI.

“That’s what the Mueller report was all
about. They said no collusion.”
FBI Director Christopher Wray told

should have called his agency to report

But Trump, who nominated Wray to
the role in 2017, told ABC News that
he disagrees. “The FBI director is
wrong,” the president said. He added,
“Life doesn’t work like that.”

TEHRAN, Iran — Japanese Prime Minister
Shinzo Abe traveled to Tehran on Wednesday
to warn that an “accidental conflict” could be
sparked amid heightened tensions between
Iran and the U.S., a message that came hours
after Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels
attacked a Saudi airport, wounding 26 peo-
ple.
Abe’s trip is the highest-level effort yet to
de-escalate the crisis as Tehran appears
poised to break the 2015 nuclear deal it
struck with world powers, an accord that the

nium closer to weapons-grade level on July 7
if European allies fail to offer it new terms.
While President Donald Trump says he wants
to talk to Tehran, the U.S. has piled on sanc-
tions that have seen Iran’s rial currency
plummet along with its crucial oil exports.
The U.S. also has sent an aircraft carrier
and B-52 bombers to the region, along with
hundreds more troops to back up the tens of
thousands already deployed across the Middle
East. The U.S. blames Iran for the Houthi
assaults, as well as a mysterious attack on oil
tankers off the coast of the United Arab
Emirates.
Abe called for “more patience” on all sides
in the crisis, which he warned could spiral out
of control.
“At the moment tension is rising. We
should do anything we can to prevent an acci-
dental conflict from happening and Iran
should play its constructive role,” Abe said.
