LESSON PLAN IN MATH – GRADE 9

I. Objectives
At the end of the 60-minute period, the students will be able to:
1. define direct variation;
2. demonstrate accuracy in solving problems involving direct variation; and
3. solve problems involving direct variation.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Direct Variation
Value: Accuracy
Reference: Nivera, G. (2013). Grade 9 Mathematics Patterns and Practicalities. Don
Bosco Press Inc. Makati City.pp.117- 117.
Materials: visual aids, scientific calculator,

III. Procedure
A. Classroom Routine
B. Review. Drill
Graph the following.
x 0 2 4 8 16
y 2 4 8 16 32
Describe the graph.
C. Motivation.
A car travels at 60 kilometers per hour. How far has it traveled after
a. half an hour?
b. 2 hours?
c. 3 hours?
d. 4 hours?
D. Activity
1. Reveal the subject matter and objectives of the session.
2. Introduce the Think-Pair-Share activity.
3. Employ the Think-Pair-Share activity.
a. Let the students answer the previous question individually in 3
minutes.
b. Pair the students and ask them to discuss their answers with their
pairs in 5 minutes.
c. Present their outputs in front of the class. Give them 5 minutes in
every pair.

E. Analysis
Questions:
1. Is there a relationship between time and the distance traveled by the
car?
2. Does the distance traveled varies as the time?(Notice that as the
time increases, the distance increases.)
3. What is the equation that desribes the situation? (let d be the
distance and t be the time)
F. Application
Given the equation d = 60t:
a. find d when t = 10; and
b. when d = 300, what is t?
G. Abstraction
The relationship between time and distance shown by the equation d= 60t is called
direct varation.
Let x and y denote two quantities. y varies directly with x, or y is directly
proportional to x, if there is a nonzero number k such that:
y= kx
H. Reflection. Journal Writing
Why do we need to be accurate in our computations?
IV. Evaluation/Assessment. Quiz
In each of the following, y varies directly as x. Find the values as indicated.
1. If y = 12 when x = 4, find y when x = 12.
2. If y = -18 when x= 9, find y when x= 7
3. If y = -3 when x= -4, find x when y= 2
4. If y = 3 when x= 10, find x when y= 1.2
5. If y = 2.5 when x= .25, find y when x= .75

V. Assignment
Answer the following problems:
1. The service fee f of a physical therapist varies directly as the number of
hours n of service rendered. A physical therapist charges PhP 2,100.00 for
3 hours service to patients in a home care. How much would he be paid for
6 ½ hours of service?
2. A teacher charges Php 500.00 per hour tutorial service to a second year
high school student. If she spends 3 hours tutoring per day, how much
would she receive in 20 days?
