at 9:45 a.m. with all of the
runners in attendance to
view the extraordinarily
generous donations.

tage Co-op, presented the
committee with a whop-
ping $50,000 on behalf of
the Co-op Community
Spaces program. The Co-
op Community Spaces
funding has allowed lo-
cal Co-ops across western
Canada to support a total
of 26 projects so far this
year. “I am pleased to pro-
vide the Minnedosa Beach
Enhancement Commit-
tee with this donation,
in order to develop the
beach playground project,”
stated Zacharias. “This
will provide Minnedosa
with a shared space where
our kids can learn and
play. It will give our lo-
cal Minnedosa residents a
space that they can enjoy
and be proud of and will
keep Minnedosa on the
map as a western Manito-
ba summer destination.”
Lisa Buchanan, com-
mittee member, explained
what such a donation does
for the committee, “We are
so close to our end goal we
can see it! We feel proud
that the Co-op saw the
playground as a worthy
cause and it’s nice to have
support from organiza-
tions such as community
spaces.” The committee’s
five-year goal was to raise
$200,000 and currently,
with these generous do-
nations and $3,000 raised
through event, they are sit-
ting at $180,000. Buchanan
stated that the committee
does need to get an up-
dated quote and make sure

the design continues to fit
their needs before pur-
chasing it.
In total there were 21
runners registered for the
10km run and 48 regis-
tered in the 5km run. For
the first event, the turnout
was wonderful. “The com-
munity has always been so
supportive, whether it be
by coming to our events
or donating,” expressed
Buchanan. “The race was
a great learning experi-
ence and we’re happy with
already planning and gear-
ing up for another event
next year.
The top three results
for the 5km run included
Matthew Toews 24:48, Lev
Frykoda 24:59 and Rem
McQuaid 26:00 for males
and Mischa Frykoda 26:27,
Abby-Jo Wark 28:18 and
Tess Manning 29:05 for fe-
males. In the 10Km event,
the top three males were
Michael Gruzo 40:12, Iain
McDonald 43:09 and Sean
Smith 51:23 with the top
three females being Gloria
Kolesar 52:22, Amy Fryko-
da 1:00:09 and Julia Tom-
linson 1:01:10
Heritage Co-op staff
also braved the dreary
weather and huddled un-
der a shelter in order to
serve the runners, organiz-
ers and on-lookers with a
delicious barbeque lunch.

Legion Unveils Banners Honouring Veterans

The local Legion
branch is already in full
swing working on the next
project, which coincides
with this project. A booklet
of all local and area vet-
erans is being compiled
showcasing a photo and
small write up about their
time served. As there is
only so much room for
banners around town, the
branch felt like all veter-
ans needed to be hon-
oured and spotlighted in
some way. The book, once
completed, will live on at
the Legion Branch. “The
staff will turn a page every

ery veteran is showcased,”
explained LaCoste. The
booklet will also be sent
rificed so much (in some
cases their lives), to ensure
to the schools through-
out the month of October
and remain there until
Remembrance Day, so the
students can have a look
and get a more personal
connection with our local
war heroes.
With 50 veterans al-
ready honoured, the
branch is hoping to have
more veterans and/or fam-
ilies come forward to have
their very own banners
made. Once Main Street is
filled, the banners will be
placed on Armitage Ave-
nue (from Main Street west
to the schools) and also
along the Beach Road (PR
#262). “This will be a Ban-
ner year for Minnedosa!”

have our own Highway of
Heroes.”

O n Wednesday, June
19th at 2:00 p.m. at the
Minnedosa Legion Branch
#138, a worthwhile and
meaningful project came
to fruition. In front of a
packed house of over 200
people, 50 veterans were
honoured with the unveil-
ing of 25, doublesided,
four foot tall by two foot
wide banners. The banners
feature photos, names, di-
vision and conflict each
veteran served in and what
years they served.
As initially reported in
the November 23rd edition
of The Minnedosa Tribune,
a subcommittee was es-
tablished to work on this
that we could continue to
live in the freedom that we
enjoy today.”
The banners will find
homes on the light stan-
dards along Main Street
Minnedosa. The Town
crew will be putting up the
banners next week and the
goal is to have all 25 up
before the July 1st week-
end and they will proudly
remain in place until after
November 11th, Remem-
brance Day.

Time Correction….
I caused some concern with residents when they saw the
start time for the Fun Fest parade reported in last week’s paper.
My apologies, that was a misprint and should have read 11 a.m.
However, on the plus side, I have just proven that people do still
read the local newspaper! See a full schedule of Fun Fest events
in this and next weeks edition of The Tribune.
School winding down…
The Class of 2019 for Minnedosa, Rivers and Elton will
graduate today with Erickson students celebrating their gradu-
ation on Monday. Watch for our commemorative Grad Sec-
tion next week. For all other students in Rolling River School
Division, the final days of the school year are here with the last
day of classes being next Thursday, June 27th. After a much-
deserved summer vacation, the 196 day, 2019-2020 school year
will begin on September 3rd. Enjoy your summer!
Here’s the Reason…
First thing Monday morning, I received an enquiry from
a concerned citizen wondering why I had mentioned some of
the previous weekend’s events in my Around Town column and
not others? My answer was simple, I mentioned the events who
chose to support The Tribune with advertising and/or printing.
It is a simple case of “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours”.
I mentioned those certain events as a small token of thanks
for choosing to spend some of their advertising/printing dol-
lars with my business. Without the support of advertisers and
print customers, we experience a revenue loss and if the trend
of people choosing only free online advertising or printing
outside the community continues, the days of our small-town
newspaper business will be numbered. That is a scary reality
that I am constantly battling.
Lost? Don’t rely on the map...
Another concerned citizen approached The Tribune this
week to point out some errors in the new Minnedosa Valley Life
brochure, assuming it had been printed locally with us. Many
of the local churches and some of the business locations listed
in the brochure are incorrect. Had we produced this brochure
we would gladly accept the complaints and try to remedy them
for our print customer. However, The Tribune did not produce
this brochure for our local Community Development Corpora-
tion. I am not yet sure where it was produced but I can confirm
The Tribune was not asked to provide a quote on this print job.
We Can’t Afford
Wall To Wall Pharmacare

I n early 2018, Prime Minister Trudeau appointed
former Ontario health minister Eric Hoskins to
chair an advisory council on the implementation
of a national pharmacare program.
This week, the council issued its  final re-
port recommending a top-to-bottom overhaul of
prescription drug coverage that would effectively
wipe out the existing workplace and private drug
plans that cover more than two-thirds of Canadi-
ans, and replace them with a one-size-fits-all gov-
ernment plan for everyone, at a cost of $15 billion
per year.
While some were surprised at such a “bold”
(translation: expensive) recommendation, they
shouldn’t have been. Hoskins, a doctor who spent
years working in war-torn places like Sudan and
Iraq, is nothing if not compassionate. Nobody
should question his desire to help.
But compassion alone doesn’t make it a good
idea, and Hoskins’ own political past suggests he’s
not worried about running up the bills for taxpay-
ers.
As health minister under Kathleen Wynne,
he  introduced  changes to Ontario’s health insur-
ance plan that made prescription drugs free for
everyone under age 25, in spite of the fact the
overwhelming majority of this group was already
fully covered by their parents’ workplace or pri-
vate plans.
In effect, he spent taxpayer money subsidiz-
ing people who had zero need for a subsidy.
Now, he wants to supersize that mistake on
a national scale, by recommending that taxpay-
ers be forced to spend billions on a government
drug plan for people who already have workplace
and private sector coverage – coverage that would
almost certainly be more comprehensive than the

new government plan that replaced it.
Hoskins and others point out that not every-
one has a drug plan, which is true. But the obvi-
ous question is: why not focus limited taxpayer re-
sources on helping those who need it, rather than
subsidizing those who don’t?
Simply put, there’s no need to wipe out a sys-
tem that already works well for the vast majority of
Canadians in order to help a few.
It’s no secret that when governments spread
themselves too thin, they end up doing everything
poorly.
More importantly, even if the government wanted
to, the federal cupboard is already bear.
Not only did the Trudeau government fail to
balance the budget as promised in 2019, but their
promised “modest deficits” totalling $26 billion
over three years ended up being $72 billion – near-
ly triple the campaign commitment – with no plan
to get back to balance anytime soon.
If they can’t even keep a lid on their existing
plans, where are they going to come up with an-
other $15 billion?
Finally, even if they could find the money,
does anybody seriously believe $15 billion would
turn out to be the final price tag?
From the federal  gun registry  to Ontar-
io’s  eHealth, and from  ships for the navy  to the
Phoenix payroll system, time and again govern-
ments have failed to stay within their estimated
budgets, with taxpayers left holding the bag.
These are the people Canadians are supposed
to trust to deliver a massive new social program on
the best-possible budget?
It’s easy for politicians to make big promises.
It’s a lot harder to actually pay for them.
We don’t need wall-to-wall government phar-
macare to address gaps in the system, and we sim-
ply can’t afford it.

Nemetchek Hired as Municipal
Emergency Coordinator

A s of June 1st, Marcy
Nylen-Nemetchek, is
the new Municipal Emer-
gency Co-ordinator (MEC)
for the Town of Minnedosa
and R.M. of Minto-Odan-
ah.
This decision comes
following the retirment of
previous MEC, Barrett Nel-
son, who agreed to remain
in the position longer than
originally agreed due to
the lack of interest in filling
the position.
The role of the Mu-
nicipal Emergency Coor-
dinator is to establish and
maintain an emergency
program for the commu-
nity, to ensure that the
community is ready in the
event of a disaster. This
program includes devel-
oping and/or maintaining
an emergency plan in ac-
cordance with the require-
ments of the Emergency
Measures Act and the Man-
itoba Emergency Measures
Organization. The Town
of Minnedosa and R.M. of
Minto-Odanah have an ex-
isting plan in place.
The MEC is also re-
sponsible for ensuring
training of those involved
in the municipal emergen-

the plan and assisting the
Municipal Elected Officials
in implementing the plan
in the event of a disaster in
collaboration with munici-
pal, provincial and federal
resources.

have always had a keen in-
terest in emergency man-
agement. I funnelled that
enthusiasm into a career
as a National Park Warden
in Riding Mountain Na-
tional Park and then as a
volunteer RCMP Auxiliary
Constable with the Spruce
Plains RCMP detach-
ment. Since 2012, I have
been volunteering with
our Municipal Emergency
Team as the Emergency
Social Services (ESS) Man-
ager. This section of the
emergency team helps the
people and pets/livestock
affected by an evacuation.
The ESS team is respon-
sible for setting up a re-
ception/registration cen-
tre and organizing food,
lodging, clothing, personal
services and pets/livestock
for those affected. I thor-
oughly enjoy working with
the amazing volunteers
and local service groups
that are part of our local
emergency team and I am
excited to continue to be
part of ensuring that our
community is ready in the
event of a disaster.”

1889 – The Minnedosa Agricultural Society purchased
a plot of 20 acres of the school section that was sold by
auction. The price paid was $20 per acre. The society also
plans to purchase the government land being sold at
auction today.
1899 – A work bee was held at All Saints Church north
of Clanwilliam last Friday to put up a new fence around
the church yard.
1909 – An inspector of the fire brigades was in town
last week and an alarm test was given. The response was
most prompt, which pleased the inspector so much, that
he complimented the members on their efficiency.
1919 – The Parks Board is seeking land for recreational
purposes and has already acquired four acres.
1929 – J. Burgess and Sons have bought the butcher
business of H.J. Greenham in Neepawa. Fred and his wife
will run the new location.
1939 – Minnedosa has been chosen as the site for the
1940 convention of the Union of Municipalities.
1949 – PFRA is calling for tenders for the construction of
a new dam for Minnedosa.
1959 – The CPR wrecking crew had its Sunday morning
calm shattered when six flatcars were derailed on a west
bound train one mile west of Minnedosa. No one was in-
jured and rail traffic was back to normal that evening.
1979 – A new development, an expanded 12,500 sq. ft.
Robinson Stores outlet for Minnedosa, is in discussion
for the former Tremont Hotel site.
1989 – A major “overflow” spill at the Mohawk Distillery
Plant totally killed the Town lagoon. It is expected to take
a month for the area to get back on its feet.
1999 – MLA Harold Gilleshammer has presented the
Minnedosa Fish Enhancement Committee with $22,500
to go toward the construction of a fish ladder which is to
begin in September.
2009 – The latest partnership between Minnedosa and
the U of M Department of Landscape Architecture has
resulted in one new fitness station on the walking trail,
with plans for another eight to ten in the future.

Library Gears up for Summer Programming

er summer filled with free,
fun programming, geared
towards children who have
completed kindergarten
through to grade six.
Starting next Friday,
June 28th, Holly Parrott
will run daily events from
Tuesday through Saturday.
The theme for the summer
is “Natural World”, there-
fore the kids will do a lot of
crafts using recycled ma-
terials as well as working
their way along a map of
the geographical world.
“Many parents and
kids recognize me already
from the day camps, crafts,
and art lessons I’ve taught

plans to reuse recycled
material for the crafts such
as tin can bowling sets, CD
disco balls, and milk car-
ton bird houses. I am also
providing drawing lessons
for the older age group to
teach some technical skills
and techniques,” explained
Holly. “My hope is to have
120 children sign-up this
year, and from the excite-
ment I’ve seen during the
visits so far it seems like
we’ll meet that goal. 
Along with the regular
craft activities, there is also
a movie night and a magi-
cian being planned. The
program will wind up in
mid-August with the kids
having a party and winning
some prizes. “At our wind
a four foot tall hand-built
kiddie tent, medium prizes
like swimming goggles and
balls, as well as handing
out small prizes and stick-
ers all summer,” said Holly.

register for the programs,
just show up and see Holly

House Wednesday seniors
for lunch, enjoying a nice
visit with others who re-
membered her from her
banking days.

er! The event, which was
moved into the Erickson
Rec Centre a couple years
back, was packed and the
crowd could be seen danc-
ing and toe-tapping to the
live music provided.
“I’d say the weekend
was a success, we had great
crowds out both days! This
was definitely one of those
years where we were hap-
py to be indoors and out of
the rain. We had to make
a few changes to our kids
activities to be able to ac-
commodate as much stuff
under the tents or in the
rink next door, but over-
all we managed to make
it work,” explained one of
the organizers, Colleen
Woychyshyn. “We heard
great praise towards all
the bands that volunteered

of what makes the Little

It was so nice to see the
dance floor full most of the
weekend!”
This year’s deserv-
ing young recipients were
Ella Waldner from Rivers
and Blake Payette from
Neepawa. Hosting such
an event is definitely not
an easy task. The planning
and prep work that goes
into it each and every year
alone is very time consum-
ing and the fact that it is in
its second decade, speaks
volumes to the many dedi-
cated volunteers who run
it.
Rows and rows of ta-
bles were set up at the back
of the hall with a huge vari-
ety of silent auction prizes
and live auction prizes.
“We were once again over-
whelmed by all the sup-
port we received through
donations and people at-
tending who also support-
live auctions. Without that
support we wouldn’t be
able to help as many kids
as we do and at the end
of the day that’s what it’s
all about,” expressed Woy-
chyshyn.
Several past recipients
and their families were
also on hand to enjoy and
help in the festivities. This
year a few past recipients’
families planned a meet
and greet for past and pres-
ent jamboree families to
spend time together. They

was her IPad and the FaceTime sessions with her family. She was honored as a Life Member of
