1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of Study

FPPSM SPACE students are UTM’s students under SPACE administration. They
learn in UTM faculties in which the learning process using the same learning
equipment, i.e LCD, wide screen, and PC, as used for full-time students.

They also used the other facilities provided such as air-conditioners, tables and
chairs. The main difference between SPACE students with full-time students is
that they have to pay the high fees that are also higher than several private
universities.

1.2 Statement Of Problem

The are several problems arise with the learning facilities during the semester in
terms of audio visual, air conditioner, toilet and etcetera. Expectation from
FPPSM SPACE students is to get good service especially learning facilities and
other facilities deemed commensurate with the fees charged.

1.3 Objective Of Study

This study is to see the extent to which FPPSM SPACE student satisfaction on the
facilities provided at the Faculty of Management and Human Resource
Development (FPPSM).

They had to pay relatively high fees compared to full-time student and this would
certainly make the level of what they want different from full-time students.

Consequently, to evaluate the satisfaction of the facilities provided, a study done

to look at the following aspects:

1. To find out the adequacy of the conveniences provided.

2. To find out the effectiveness of the UTM to address the malfunction of

learning tools in FPPSM.

3. To determine the level of FPPSM SPACE student satisfaction on the level

of compatibility between the facilities provided by the fees charged.

4. To know whether equipment failure disrupting the learning process of

FPPSM SPACE students.
1.4 Research Question

Base on the research objective above, four research question was rise and must to
be analyze. The research questions is :

i) Did the learning facilities provided by the UTM sufficient for the learning
process?

ii) To what extent is the effectiveness of the UTM to address the malfunction
of learning tools in FPPSM?

iii) What is the level of satisfaction of FPPSM SPACE Student about the
facilities in FPPSM?

iv) To what extent does equipment failure disturb the learning process of
FPPSM SPACE Student?

1.5 Significant Of Study

The study was conducted to identify facility needs required by students in terms
of either academic facilities or non-academic facilities. The results also will be
able to know the values of student interest and satisfaction on the provision of
facilities for students at FPPSM especially SPACE Student.

In this study, has identified a number of interests including: -

i) Ensure that UTM SPACE Students acquire facilities that meet the
educational needs in the learning process and commensurate with the fees
charged to them.

ii) Provide opportunities for the FPPSM management team to improve and
enhance the provision of appropriate facilities for learning process.

iii) Identify weaknesses and deficiencies in a management unit for improved

and enhanced their management level.
1.6 Scope Of Study

The area of the study is service quality in higher education. It is focused on the
dimensions of service quality from student perspectives, particularly in the faculty
context. It does not focus on the university context as a whole as this will require
broader evaluations which some of the elements is out of the faculty control i.e.
facilities like bus stop, sports and recreation, etceteras.
This study was conducted at the Faculty of Management and Human Resource
Development (FPPSM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM SPACE). This
study population was students in FPPSM SPACE.

1.7 Methodology

In this research to collecting and researching available data, research team

developed questionnaires to send to the SPACE UTM Student in FPPSM. The
questionnaire was designed in such a way that basic information could be
acquired on demographic information, facilities that FPPSM provided for student,
effectiveness of the UTM to address the malfunction of learning tools and also the
level of satisfaction of FPPSM Space Student about the facilities.

Questionnaires were distributed to 30 students of which use the facilities SPACE

FPPSM and are chosen at random by the research team.

2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

Base on the research which done by Ruzita Selamat et al (2004), a conducive teaching
and learning environment is one of the elements which influence the effectiveness of the
knowledge transmitted and received. Providing a good teaching and learning
environment will help enhance the development of the university into becoming the
world-class university.

Teaching and learning environment studied include physical and administrative aspects of
the faculty that have an impact on teaching and learning in FPPSM of infrastructure,
equipment and administrative and clerical support. Result from that study shown that
lecturers feel classrooms and resource room in FPPSM not conducive to teaching and
learning.

According to Mohd Noor Bin Muhammad et al (2003), the provision of student facilities
is important in influencing education process and to shape the lives of student as
successful person in future. The facilities were divided into two basic categories of
facilities which is an academic facilities and also non-academic facilities.
Inadequate provision of facilities and the condition of the facilities that provided for
UTM SPACE student in FPPSM has become a major focus of this study. The study
covers 30 respondents from among students who use FPPSM UTM for their class. The
purpose of this study is to determine the level of satisfaction and importance of providing
facilities at the faculty of the main subjects to be emphasized in this study to evaluate the
extent to preparation for the students.

The findings have found some issues and problems related to the provision of such
facilities. Based on the findings, recommendations more
leads to an increase and improvement of some facilities to do more for convenience and
comfort to the students in FPPSM SPACE UTM.

This Faculty offers a variety of laboratory, classroom and Lecture Theater, equipped with
appropriate teaching and learning with teaching and learning concepts based on problem-
based, action learning and practical applications of subjects taught. The Space UTM
students will also use facilities used by full-time students.

Lately, many complaints rise from the Space UTM student about classrooms provided by
the UTM Space. Complaints are in terms of weakness of Space UTM to provided best
facilities. Are there UTM Space and the faculty recognize this problem?. From this
question, there are issues, do the facilities maintained by the faculty?. This study will
answer the question of whether the facilities provided by the faculty adequate and
properly maintained for use by students in the faculty.

3.0 FINDING AND DISCUSSION

Some results of the research were unexpected, while others provided new and useful
insights for the next project activity. Below are the key findings of the research :

3.1 Did the learning facilities provided by the UTM sufficient for the learning

Pie chart above shows that 47% of respondents said they did not agree that parking
facilities are adequate. This means that the majority of respondents are not satisfied with
the car parking facilities. This factor occurs because most of the SPACE students drive
their own car for attends the class compare to the full time students whereby majorities of
them walk or ride the motorcycle to attend the class.

Lack of the car park facilities enforce space students park their car on side of the main
road and cause of that most of them got a summons by the UTM police officer.

For the blank space (others) provided, we found that 13% of respondents said that they
were not satisfied with the toilet. This is beyond our expectations.

3.2 To what extent is the effectiveness of the UTM to address the malfunction of
learning tools in FPPSM?

Strongly Strongly Total

For the first question, 63.33% of respondents agreed and strongly agreed that UTM does
provide adequate learning facilities to students FPPSM.

However, the answer to the second question showed that the percentage / number of
respondents was almost the same between "agreed" with "disagreed" that technicians will
repair the equipment accordingly if it is damaged which is 47% agreed and 43%
disagreed.

Statistics for the third answer shows that 66.67% of respondents agreed and strongly
agreed with that the equipment will damaged or fails to work again after it repairs.

For the fourth question, majority respondents (76.67%) disagreed that FPPSM always
provide replacement classroom accordingly if there are problems with the classroom that
has been set.

From the above information, it can show that UTM is not effective in addressing the
malfunction of learning tools in FPPSM.

3.3 What is the level of satisfaction of FPPSM SPACE student about the facilities

disagree and strongly disagree with second question where they really care about the
facilities provided.

From the third question, 76.67% of respondents would take into account the quality of
equipment provided despite UTM provides competent lecturers. Similarly, the fourth
question, 93.33% of respondents is not satisfied because internet facilities are provided
only for full-time student.

The answers to the questions above shows that the majority of respondents were not
satisfied with the facilities provided in FPPSM and they feel that the services provided to
them are low and not commensurate with the fees charged to them.

The above statistic shows that 87% of respondents disagreed and strongly disagreed with
the question. This is very clear that the respondents felt that learning equipment often
failure is interfere their learning process.

4.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

4.1 Conclusion

From the study we did, we found that the topic we bring through our initial
observation is very consistent from our expectations.

Almost all students FPPSM SPACE students expect that the facilities and services
provided to them is a good quality, which is commensurate with a relatively high
fees charged to them.
Through research, we found that respondents are not satisfied with the learning
tools and other facilities provided. The study also showed that UTM satff is not
effective in addressing the problem of equipment failure to function.

Learning equipment often fail to function and lack of competence from UTM staff
to address the problem caused respondents feel that it is disrupted their learning
process and this is not good for students and SPACE UTM itself.

Subsequent to the above, we found that the lack of learning facilities at in the
Faculty of Management and Human Resource Development (FPPSM) does not
meet the satisfaction of FPPSM SPACE students.

4.2 Recommendation

Based on survey results, we suggest that management of the SPACE UTM

emphasizing the aspects that give satisfaction to their students.

SPACE UTM management should not underestimate the aspect of equipment and
facilities provided in FPPSM and not only emphasize on academic aspects only.

SPACE UTM management must cooperate with the UTM to address issues
arising from equipment failure to function and lack of other facilities.

Discontent among the students would interfere with their learning process and
worry that if they give negative feedback will affect the image of SPACE UTM.
